Implementing several forms of therapy within the matrix of Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in order to successfully treat victims of child sexual abuse.
2. On September 28, 2012, Burbine
was arrested after an investigation
into his wife’s “unlicensed child-care”
business turned up evidence of
child sexual abuse.
His victims ranged from 8 days old,
to 3 ½ years in age, and were both
male and female.
Video-tapes were found showing
Burbine raping 13 different infants
and toddlers.

13. 1. Any sexual exploitation of a child under the age
of 16 for the sexual pleasure, or profit of an adult or
much older person.
2.The use of a child for the sexual gratification of an
adult.
14. The needs of children are different from the needs of adults. Children are NOT
simply “tiny adults”, and we must not treat them as such.
It is up to the helper to figure out the needs of the child as best we can, and forge
a treatment to suit their needs.
Very young children lack the verbal skills to understand many things, so an
eclectic mix of the following treatment techniques will be used.
Play Therapy.
Art Therapy.
Demonstrations of Concepts and ideas using cartoons, and drawings.
Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
Developmental Approach (based on the needs of each child individually).
Family Counseling sessions.
Group-Art or Play Therapy sessions.
15. Play Therapy is a form of counseling or psychotherapy that uses play to
communicate with and help people, especially children, to prevent or resolve
psychological trauma.
Play Therapy is generally employed with children aged 3-11 and provides a
way for them to express their experiences and feelings through a natural, self-
guided, self-healing process.
In the case of the children and infants who have been molested, raped, and
abused by John Burbine, Play Therapy will be employed in helping the children
create their Trauma Narrative to lessen the psychological impact of the abuse.

22. Art Therapy is the therapeutic use of art making, within a professional
relationship, by people who have experienced trauma, illness, or other challenges
in living.
In this case, the children are so young that some of them will not have
sufficient vocabularies for communicating what has happened to them. Art
Therapy will give these children a voice, and allow them to create their trauma
narrative. Art Therapy helps children cope with the trauma in a safe way using
paints, crayons, clay, and many other mediums.

28. We must be ever mindful, as helpers, that we do not
attempt to FORCE a modality of treatment on a client,
especially a child who has been sexually abused. We
MUST be where the child is, and FORGE the treatment
around the individual needs of the child. An
ECLECTIC approach to treatment is crucial in helping
to soften the trauma, and help the child find their way.
DIVERSITY ROCKS!!!!
29. KEY COMPONENTS of TF-CBT
Establishing and maintaining therapeutic relationship with child and parent.
Psycho-education about childhood trauma and PTSD.
Parenting component including parent management skills.
Relaxation skills individualized to the child and parent.
Cognitive coping: connecting thoughts, feelings, and behaviors related to the trauma.
Trauma narrative: assisting the child in sharing a verbal, written, or artistic narrative about
the trauma(s) and related experiences, and cognitive and affective processing of the trauma
experiences.
Conjoint parent-child sessions to practice skills and enhance trauma-related discussions.
Enhancing future personal safety and enhancing optimal developmental trajectory through
providing safety and social skills training as needed.
Appropriate age range is 3-18 years of age.

31. No matter how hard it is for you handle the rape
of your child, it is much more difficult for your
child.
Do not react or act out when you hear your
child’s trauma narrative, you must not damage them
further.
Being calm, supportive, and strong, these are
your main duties.
And remember, you may need to seek individual
counseling for yourself. There is no shame in
needing help.
32. Give the community factual information about child sex-abuse.
Set up support groups for the children who have been victimized, and a group for
the parents of those who have been victimized.
Perhaps a volunteer-staffed hot-line that has information on local counseling
resources for anyone who may need them.
Activity is one of the best ways to feel better. Get the community active in
educating their children about safety and prevention of sexual abuse. Concepts
like how to tell the difference between “good touch” and “bad touch”, and how to
say no. Stress to them that an open dialogue with their children is crucial.
Leave a support structure in place, and utilize existing support services and
resources.
33. The Boston Area Rape Crisis Center has links and contacts
to an amazing amount of resources and support for both the
children and their parents.
http://barcc.org/information/resources-online/survivor
Pandora’s Project has many resources and a lot of
information for supporting people who are close to someone
who has been sexually abused.

These are just examples of resources that can be given to
clients, client’s family and friends, and even community
members. YOU ARE NOT ALONE.
34. NAMBLA calls for the empowerment of youth in
all areas, not just the sexual. We support greater
economic, political and social opportunities for
young people and denounce the rampant ageism
that segregates and isolates them in fear and
mistrust. We believe sexual feelings are a positive
life force. We support the rights of youth as well as
adults to choose the partners with whom they wish
to share and enjoy their bodies.

36. AoA: Short for “age of attraction” meaning the age groups of children they are attracted to
* MAA: Minor attracted adult (used in reverse of the word “pedophile”, though it is the same
and places the child as responsible for the abuse)
* AoC: Age of (legal) consent
* CL: Child Lover/pedophile
* GL: Girl Lover/Attracted to girls
* BL: Boy Lover/Attracted to boys
* YF: Young Friend, used when speaking about a victim
* CP: Child Porn (Which could mean anything from photos of naked or half-naked children to
photos of actual child rape/torture)
* LG: Little Girl
* LB: Little Boy
* GM: Girl Moment – which is time spent with a young girl (that can either be a passing second
consisting of nothing more than a glance or a smile, or a lengthy visit with a girl);
* BM: Boy Moment – same as Girl Moment

43. Here is a National Data-Base of Sex-Offenders. It is
a Government entity, and is an excellent place to start
when your suspicions are raised. However, the use of
an alias will defeat the usefulness of this resource.

44. John Burbine has a history of sexually abusing
children. He was convicted of indecent assault against
a child in 1989, and accused of sexually abusing young
boys in 2005 and 2009.
There are thousands of legislative acts and laws that
govern when, where, and how a child-molester has to
register, but there are very few laws that actually
protect the children.
John Burbine has been able to rape and molest his
way through 3 decades because the laws are deficient.
45. Child Sexual Abuse
Child sexual abuse matters are generally handled by state and local authorities,
and not by the federal government. (US Department of Justice)
Section 23A. Whoever unlawfully has sexual intercourse or unnatural sexual
intercourse, and abuses a child under 16 years of age and:
(a) there exists more than a 5 year age difference between the defendant and the
victim and the victim is under 12 years of age;
(b) there exists more than a 10 year age difference between the defendant and the
victim where the victim is between the age of 12 and 16 years of age; or
(c) at the time of such intercourse, was a mandated reporter as defined in section
21 of chapter 119, shall be punished by imprisonment in the state prison for life
or for any term of years, but not less than 10 years.

effective May 4, 2012. Sex offenders may not drive ice cream trucks. (Wow, up until
2012 it was okay for sex-offenders to drive ice-cream trucks!)

In researching the laws and regulations on sex-offenders in general, and child-
molesters in particular, I was struck by the complete lack of humanity in the laws.
There are more laws protecting the child-molesters than there are protecting the
children.
Things are getting better, yeah, better for the child-molesters. They have
information-sharing web-sites and chat-rooms, and they share child-pornography with
relative impunity via electronic means.
We The People need to get geared up and start making the changes needed to
protect our children. We are their only hope. It is our DUTY to protect. Be a Voice.
47. Be ever mindful of your own
deficiencies as a counselor. If you make a
mistake in school, you lose a few points,
but if you make a mistake with a
traumatized child, you can do more
damage to their already wounded psyches.
Learn all that you can, your future
clients deserve your very best efforts.
