Objective
This capstone course concludes with a research Team Project that starts during the first week and continues throughout the duration of the class. It culminates with the submission of a formal team report and an oral presentation by each team during Week 7, and Peer Reviews in Week 8.
Each team will identify and explore an emerging technology. This will be a technology that may already exist, but is drawing attention because of new applications, anticipated impacts or potential controversies. Examples could include:
· nanotechnology in manufacturing,
· genetically modified organisms,
· remote/robotic surgery, or
· wireless electricity.
The team will explore the technical, social, cultural, moral and ethical issues presented by the technology.
Guidelines:
Teams
All teams will be assigned at the start of the first week. The first deliverable is due on the Sunday of Week 1, so students must get organized and into the project immediately. Each team will select a Team Leader, who will be responsible for the coordination of the research and the submission of assignments. Team members will remain on the assigned team throughout the duration of the class (in the project world, project managers seldom have the opportunity to select their own team members!). It is highly recommended that each team develop its own Team Contract to clearly define expectations, strategies, and timelines.
Emphasis is placed on both individual contributions and the final product of teams. You will communicate with your team through team meetings (online) and team discussion threads. Team members who fail to participate in an assignment will not get points for that assignment.
With those parts of the Team Project where a group grade will be assigned, all team members must submit a copy of the team’s work. When an assignment is completed, the Team Leader will distribute the finished product to all team members, and each team member must submit this copy to the Dropbox,
The Task
The primary focus of the team is to research and assess the issues associated with a specific emerging technology. The team will produce a formal research paper in APA format, with each team member contributing 10 pages of text. The paper will provide the basis for a 20-minute team presentation.
The following Required Elements must be researched and included in the final project. What follows is a list only, and is in no way an outline:

The Warm Springs Initiative aims to create a combined physical and vocational rehabilitation center for wounded veterans and civilians on the site of the “Little White House” used by Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
The initiative is a partnership between the Georgia Warrior Alliance, the Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute, Callaway Gardens, and several institutions of higher education, as well as some major corporations. The rehabilitation side aims to become a national facility for treatment of, and recovery from, serious neurological disorders. The vocational aspects will complement this recovery by offering practical instruction and work activities in a variety of fields including construction, landscaping, farming, and information technology. Another avenue for veterans to return to work is through an entrepreneurship program, supporting the incubation of veteran owned businesses. As the vocational side matures and expands into newareas, the campuses will grow to form a one shop stop, constituting one of the nation's first care-to-work programs. The campuses will be within driving distance of the Atlanta metro area and Warm Springs in particular is also conveniently located near Macon, Columbus, and Fort Benning. The centrality of this location allows it to service the needs for all 3 cities (where the majority of Georgia’s 75,000 homeless live), while also using military transportation to conveniently bring patients from all over the country. Funding will come from a variety of sources, including in-kind contributions from partner organizations, as well as cash donations from individual philanthropists. Finally, the project will leverage a four to one match from the Federal government for vocational programs for persons with disabilities.

Students have a large number of natural and man-made disasters from which to select a case study. The case study cannot come from the Haddow and Bullock textbook. Please obtain the approval of the instructor for your proposed case study.
Approach this assignment this way: If you were providing a written analysis for a group of elected officials or the senior staff of an emergency management agency, what would you want them to learn and retain about this case? Think of this case study presentation as an “after action report” on the emergency management function for this event.
Key elements of your written analysis should include:

2.1 OVERVIEW
Projects exist and operate in environments that may have an influence on them. These influences can have a favorable or unfavorable impact on the project. Two major categories of influences are enterprise environmental factors (EEFs) and organizational process assets (OPAs).
EEFs originate from the environment outside of the project and often outside of the enterprise. EEFs may have an impact at the organizational, portfolio, program, or project level. See Section 2.2 for additional information on EEFs.
OPAs are internal to the organization. These may arise from the organization itself, a portfolio, a program, another project, or a combination of these. Figure 2-1 shows the breakdown of project influences into EEFs and OPAs. See Section 2.3 for additional information on OPAs.
In addition to EEFs and OPAs, organizational systems play a significant role in the life cycle of the project. System factors that impact the power, influence, interests, competencies, and political capabilities of the people to act within the organizational system are discussed further in the section on organizational systems (see Section 2.4).
2.2 ENTERPRISE ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS
Enterprise environmental factors (EEFs) refer to conditions, not under the control of the project team, that influence, constrain, or direct the project. These conditions can be internal and/or external to the organization. EEFs are considered as inputs to many project management processes, specifically for most planning processes. These factors may enhance or constrain project management options. In addition, these factors may have a positive or negative influence on the outcome.
EEFs vary widely in type or nature. These factors need to be considered if the project is to be effective. EEFs include but are not limited to the factors described in Sections 2.2.1 and 2.2.2.
2.2.1 EEFS INTERNAL TO THE ORGANIZATION
The following EEFs are internal to the organization:
Organizational culture, structure, and governance. Examples include vision, mission, values, beliefs, cultural norms, leadership style, hierarchy and authority relationships, organizational style, ethics, and code of conduct.
Geographic distribution of facilities and resources. Examples include factory locations, virtual teams, shared systems, and cloud computing.

Introduction
This project is an opportunity to discuss what you think should be the highest priority (national interest) in the future of American foreign policy. Completing this activity is a mandatory component of this course. It serves as the standard course assessment for all GOVT 2305 students. Failure to submit this project in its entirety will result in a failing grade for the course. There are three steps to completing this project.
Step 1: Identify the issue and how the US government is currently addressing it. Then, identify strategies that could be used to improve those efforts.
Step 2: Gather three scholarly research articles that address the issue you selected and offer suggestions for improvement.
Step 3: Prepare a formal policy memo for the President of the United States (POTUS). This is the only part of the project you will turn in.
The grading standards used to assess the quality of your work for this project will be detailed in a grading rubric, which will be provided during the semester.
It is strongly suggested that student read ahead and use the library database during the first week of the course to begin researching a topic. This project requires carefully planning throughout the semester. Refer to the course calendar for the specific due date. The final product is to be submitted as a single file via the submission guidelines identified by the instructor.
Step 1 – Identifying the Issue
A. Throughout chapter 14 of the textbook, you will find traditional methods and core issues used to create the foreign policy agenda. Use this information as a starting point for identifying the subject of your own research.
B. Next, identify a single issue that you feel should be the highest priority in American foreign policy and specifically how the nation should go about pursuing that policy.
Step 2 - Gathering Sources
A. Find three high-quality reference materials (articles published in an academic journal) using the following criteria:
· The article must be no more than ten years old, a minimum of five pages in length, and should meet the standards of college level material.
· Carefully choose those works that provide a variety of perspectives on your topic.
· Newspaper articles, magazine articles, textbooks and items of the like are considered "supplemental sources" on the collegiate level and are not quality research materials.
· Dictionaries, Encyclopedias (including Wikipedia), Almanacs, or an Atlas are reference materials and should not be listed in any works cited page on the collegiate level.
· Properly document your sources in your memo and on a works cited page.
Step 3 – The Memo
A. Your paper should quickly explain how the President can take your advice and put it into action. He is a busy man, so keep it short and to the point.
B. This document should quickly articulate (in 2-3 paragraphs) the relevance of the issue, your policy position (citing the support.
Infrastructure: Deciding Matters by Dr Larry Beeferman and Dr Allan Wain
This study builds upon the understanding of infrastructure developed in our paper “Infrastructure: Defining Matters” with the aim of translating it in practical terms using a more detailed formulation of the schematic for pension fund investment decision-making which we outlined in that paper. Th e method for our doing so is to use as a reference an in-depth review of the decision-making process of one of the leading, if not the leading U.S. public sector pension fund on many matters, including infrastructure investment. The text proceeds as follows: First, we determine how the fund articulates what it understands infrastructure to be or entail. Second, we review what it states are its strategic objectives for infrastructure investment. Third, we canvas its stated perceptions or beliefs as to the financial characteristics of infrastructure investments. Fourth, we review in extensive detail the approaches and parameters according to which the fund seeks to achieve those strategic objectives. Fifth, we compare these with the ones embodied in a modified and refined version of the linked categories formulated in the paper. We suggest that while those approaches and parameters are useful they embody multiple and overlapping characterizations not conducive to systematic analysis. We point out that in terms of substantive content they are encompassed by but do not exhaust ones associated with the linked categories, such as Supply – Exogenous Constraints on Competition, Enterprise – Finance, Non-Enterprise Stakeholders. We discuss why we think the categories could be a more useful tool by which to describe and assess the fund’s infrastructure investments. Sixth we explore more closely certain aspects of the actual investment decisions which the fund has made. We start by detailing as best we can determine not only the vehicles through which the fund has invested but also all the particular investments made by any of the vehicles at the level of the infrastructure-related enterprise. We then consider two of the fund’s investments at the enterprise level, in one case according to the certain of the parameters which the fund has set forth but then in both cases based on the revised version of the linked categories. Finally, we summarize key observations made in the course of the foregoing analysis and off er conclusions which might be drawn from it. These which point to ways the approach we suggest might contribute to better decision-making with respect to infrastructure investments.

2.1 OVERVIEW
Projects exist and operate in environments that may have an influence on them. These influences can have a favorable or unfavorable impact on the project. Two major categories of influences are enterprise environmental factors (EEFs) and organizational process assets (OPAs).
EEFs originate from the environment outside of the project and often outside of the enterprise. EEFs may have an impact at the organizational, portfolio, program, or project level. See Section 2.2 for additional information on EEFs.
OPAs are internal to the organization. These may arise from the organization itself, a portfolio, a program, another project, or a combination of these. Figure 2-1 shows the breakdown of project influences into EEFs and OPAs. See Section 2.3 for additional information on OPAs.
In addition to EEFs and OPAs, organizational systems play a significant role in the life cycle of the project. System factors that impact the power, influence, interests, competencies, and political capabilities of the people to act within the organizational system are discussed further in the section on organizational systems (see Section 2.4).
2.2 ENTERPRISE ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS
Enterprise environmental factors (EEFs) refer to conditions, not under the control of the project team, that influence, constrain, or direct the project. These conditions can be internal and/or external to the organization. EEFs are considered as inputs to many project management processes, specifically for most planning processes. These factors may enhance or constrain project management options. In addition, these factors may have a positive or negative influence on the outcome.
EEFs vary widely in type or nature. These factors need to be considered if the project is to be effective. EEFs include but are not limited to the factors described in Sections 2.2.1 and 2.2.2.
2.2.1 EEFS INTERNAL TO THE ORGANIZATION
The following EEFs are internal to the organization:
Organizational culture, structure, and governance. Examples include vision, mission, values, beliefs, cultural norms, leadership style, hierarchy and authority relationships, organizational style, ethics, and code of conduct.
Geographic distribution of facilities and resources. Examples include factory locations, virtual teams, shared systems, and cloud computing.

Introduction
This project is an opportunity to discuss what you think should be the highest priority (national interest) in the future of American foreign policy. Completing this activity is a mandatory component of this course. It serves as the standard course assessment for all GOVT 2305 students. Failure to submit this project in its entirety will result in a failing grade for the course. There are three steps to completing this project.
Step 1: Identify the issue and how the US government is currently addressing it. Then, identify strategies that could be used to improve those efforts.
Step 2: Gather three scholarly research articles that address the issue you selected and offer suggestions for improvement.
Step 3: Prepare a formal policy memo for the President of the United States (POTUS). This is the only part of the project you will turn in.
The grading standards used to assess the quality of your work for this project will be detailed in a grading rubric, which will be provided during the semester.
It is strongly suggested that student read ahead and use the library database during the first week of the course to begin researching a topic. This project requires carefully planning throughout the semester. Refer to the course calendar for the specific due date. The final product is to be submitted as a single file via the submission guidelines identified by the instructor.
Step 1 – Identifying the Issue
A. Throughout chapter 14 of the textbook, you will find traditional methods and core issues used to create the foreign policy agenda. Use this information as a starting point for identifying the subject of your own research.
B. Next, identify a single issue that you feel should be the highest priority in American foreign policy and specifically how the nation should go about pursuing that policy.
Step 2 - Gathering Sources
A. Find three high-quality reference materials (articles published in an academic journal) using the following criteria:
· The article must be no more than ten years old, a minimum of five pages in length, and should meet the standards of college level material.
· Carefully choose those works that provide a variety of perspectives on your topic.
· Newspaper articles, magazine articles, textbooks and items of the like are considered "supplemental sources" on the collegiate level and are not quality research materials.
· Dictionaries, Encyclopedias (including Wikipedia), Almanacs, or an Atlas are reference materials and should not be listed in any works cited page on the collegiate level.
· Properly document your sources in your memo and on a works cited page.
Step 3 – The Memo
A. Your paper should quickly explain how the President can take your advice and put it into action. He is a busy man, so keep it short and to the point.
B. This document should quickly articulate (in 2-3 paragraphs) the relevance of the issue, your policy position (citing the support.

This study builds upon the understanding of infrastructure developed in our paper “Infrastructure: Defining Matters” with the aim of translating it in practical terms using a more detailed formulation of the schematic for pension fund investment decision-making which we outlined in that paper. Th e method for our doing so is to use as a reference an in-depth review of the decision-making process of one of the leading, if not the leading U.S. public sector pension fund on many matters, including infrastructure investment. The text proceeds as follows: First, we determine how the fund articulates what it understands infrastructure to be or entail. Second, we review what it states are its strategic objectives for infrastructure investment. Third, we canvas its stated perceptions or beliefs as to the financial characteristics of infrastructure investments. Fourth, we review in extensive detail the approaches and parameters according to which the fund seeks to achieve those strategic objectives. Fifth, we compare these with the ones embodied in a modified and refined version of the linked categories formulated in the paper. We suggest that while those approaches and parameters are useful they embody multiple and overlapping characterizations not conducive to systematic analysis. We point out that in terms of substantive content they are encompassed by but do not exhaust ones associated with the linked categories, such as Supply – Exogenous Constraints on Competition, Enterprise – Finance, Non-Enterprise Stakeholders. We discuss why we think the categories could be a more useful tool by which to describe and assess the fund’s infrastructure investments. Sixth we explore more closely certain aspects of the actual investment decisions which the fund has made. We start by detailing as best we can determine not only the vehicles through which the fund has invested but also all the particular investments made by any of the vehicles at the level of the infrastructure-related enterprise. We then consider two of the fund’s investments at the enterprise level, in one case according to the certain of the parameters which the fund has set forth but then in both cases based on the revised version of the linked categories. Finally, we summarize key observations made in the course of the foregoing analysis and off er conclusions which might be drawn from it. These which point to ways the approach we suggest might contribute to better decision-making with respect to infrastructure investments.

His research focuses on how marriages change or remain stable over time, and in particular how relationship maintenance is constrained or enhanced by the contexts in which it takes place. Currently this includes research on marriages in the military, funded by the Department of Defense, and marriages in low-income populations, funded by the National Institute on Child Health and Human Development.
He received the Gerald R. Miller Award for Early Career Achievement from the International Association for Relationship Research in 2004 and has twice been the recipient of the National Council on Family Relation’s Reuben Hill Research and Theory Award for outstanding contributions to family science. His textbook, Intimate Relationships (coauthored with Thomas Bradbury), will be published by W. W. Norton in January, 2010.
People rarely change their minds about subjects that are important to them. Those who favor gun control today are likely to favor gun control ten years from now, and those who vote for Democratic candidates today are likely to do so throughout their lives.
Yet intimate relationships, and marriages in particular, are the exception to this rule. After two people stand before everyone important to them in the world and publicly declare that they love each other and intend to remain together for the rest of their lives, everything social psychology has learned about the stability of publicly declared opinions suggests that these will be the most stable opinions of all (Festinger, 1957). Yet of course they aren’t. Research Project
In preparation for this semester long research project, students are to select a community for this assignment. Students should select a community for which they wish to locate resources. The semester long project must have approval from the instructor. Once approval has been gained from the instructor, the student may begin collecting data regarding the community. Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
