Syphilis
Syphilis is caused by the spirochete Treponema pallidum. It has likely existed since pre-Columbian times but the Columbian hypothesis suggests it was introduced to Europe in the 15th century. Syphilis has primary, secondary, and tertiary stages and can also be transmitted congenitally. It is diagnosed through tests that detect antibodies produced against T. pallidum and is treated with antibiotics like penicillin. Prevention involves practicing safe sex and maintaining mutually monogamous relationships.
Lassa Fever
