1. INT. DEPARTMENT STORE - DAY
Holiday MUZAK plays over the store speakers, filling the area
with a false sense of merriment.
DAREN, a strapping young man in his twenties, stands over a
round table filled with dozens of ties.
He picks up a red striped tie and looks at it in the light.
Shakes his head and puts it back down, but as he does he sees
the young woman behind the checkout counter looking at him.
They smile at each other for a moment and then both return to
what they were doing.
GRACE (O.C.)
Excuse me?
DAREN doesn’t move at first. GRACE, an older woman in her
sixties, is standing just behind DAREN with a cart full of
items.
GRACE (CONT’D)
Excuse me, young man?
DAREN realizes she is talking to him and turns around a bit
startled.
DAREN
Yes?
GRACE
I’m so sorry to bother you.
DAREN
It’s okay.
GRACE
This is a little embarrassing for me, but
I was just suddenly struck with ...
(She begins to get chocked up)
... It has just been so hard.
DAREN
(Getting uncomfortable)
I’m sorry?
GRACE
The reason I have so rudely came up to
you is, because of your resemblance to my
son.
DAREN
(Confused)
O ... kay?

GRACE
The thing is, he recently died in
Afghanistan. One of those horrid
roadside things.
(Tears begin to well in her
eyes)
DAREN
Wow, um ... I’m so sorry to hear that.
GRACE
I feel so bad imposing on you like this.
(She begins to cry)
But I was ... wondering ... hoping
really. That you might ...
(Her breathing begins to
quicken)
might say ... “Good bye, Mom” as I ...
(Trying to calm herself)
As I walk away.
DAREN
(Quite uneasy, but feeling the
woman’s pain)
Sure, I guess so.
GRACE
That is so wonderful to hear.
Without warning she gives him a hug and he hesitantly hugs
her back. After a moment she releases him and wipes the
tears from her eyes and smiles.
She takes a few steps away and turns back to him with a
smile.
DAREN
(Waving)
Good bye, mom.
(Thinking for a moment)
I love you!
GRACE turns and walks directly to the checkout counter where
the young woman is stationed.
DAREN returns to the ties.
INT. DEPARTMENT STORE - MOMENTS LATER
DAREN is still contemplating the ties.

BECKY (O.C.)
For you or your dad?
DAREN looks up from the tie and sees BECKY, the woman from
the checkout counter, looking at him from across the table.
BECKY is in her twenties and quite beautiful.
DAREN
For me. I have a company holiday party
to go to in a few weeks and I thought ...
maybe a new tie would be a good plan.
BECKY
Can I make a suggestion?
DAREN
Please do.
BECKY
You need something that brings out your
eyes.
DAREN
Sounds good to me.
BECKY
So ... lets take a look at your eyes.
(Looking in to his eyes)
Stunning green, is a phrase that comes to
mind.
DAREN
(A little embarrassed)
Thanks.
BECKY
Who said green eyes were a good thing?
DAREN
Oh ... um
BECKY
(Smiling)
I’m just kidding, I think green eyes are
great.
(Looking down at the table)
Green eyes call for a green tie. Which
is also festive, so it has a duel
purpose.
BECKY picks up a few green ties and holds them up to DAREN
and thinks for a moment and then makes a decision.

BECKY (CONT’D)
This one is perfect.
(Holding a striped one out
toward him)
DAREN
Thank you.
BECKY
You are very welcome.
DAREN
I guess this is all I need.
BECKY turns back toward the counter and DAREN follows after
her.
At the counter BECKY picks up a stray receipt that is lying
on the register and scans it. She takes the tie and scans it
as well.
BECKY
I think it’s really sweet.
DAREN
(Confused)
Oh?
BECKY
What you are doing for your mother, it
shows how much you care.
DAREN
Yes I care ... wait what?
BECKY
It’s nice.
(She looks at the register
screen)
That will be one thousand and forty-seven
dollars and thirteen cents.
(She looks up from the register
with a wide smile)
DAREN
(Startled by the amount)
That must be some really great tie.
BECKY
Yea, it’s nice.

DAREN
I’m not sure it’s one thousand and forty-
seven dollars nice?
BECKY
Nope, but that stuff you bought for your
mother’s new house. Really generous of
you, after the divorce and everything. I
really admire that.
DAREN
Wait, wait, wait ... did that woman say
she was my mother?
BECKY
It was pretty obvious.
DAREN
(Realizing what is going on)
And she said I was going to pay ...
BECKY
Yeap, like I said really generous of you.
DAREN
She isn’t my mother.
BECKY
That’s not very nice to say.
DAREN
No, I mean she really IS NOT my mother.
She just screwed us?
BECKY
(Looking around confused)
What?
FADE TO BLACK.
