The Production Process - Researching the case studies
Pair up with someone else in the class and each pick a different case study to investigate
 Frozen
 The Hobbit
 12 Years a Slave
 Shifty
 The Fifth Estate.
You are going to produce a fact sheet on your case study film. This will need to be in a digital form and the
three best examples will be added to the class blog. The fact sheet will include information about the
specific production process used by your selected film.
Production
Who directed this film? What other films have they directed?
Who produced this film? What other films have the produced?
Who are some of the other key personnel involved in this film(not actors). What roles did they have, what
else have they done?
What production companies were involved in this film? What other films are they famous for? What other
industries, business do they own/run. Are there any non-media companies?
How long did it take the film? Was there anything interesting about where it was filmed, how it was filmed
etc.
What was the budget and how was that budget possibly spent ( e.g. stars, Special Effect, lavish costumes
and locations). Did they get money to help to them make the film ( e.g. tax breaks, product sponsorship,
product placement, references to businesses, help from the govt)
Distribution
Who distributed this film in the UK and US? What other films have they distributed?
What type of distribution did they filmhave?
How much money did the film make and over what time period? (look at open weekend figures, different
countries etc. – check out Box Office Mojo)
Exhibition
How long was it in the cinemas in different places, how many theaters were showing it (again box office
mojo will help you find the figures for most films.)
How did the number of theater change and what impact did this have on the money to made and vice
versa?
How can you access the filmnow that it is not in the theaters?
Was there any evidence of ‘exchange’? What does the exchange suggest about the audience and the
institution?
