The presentation summarizes an art project where students from Garrett County Public Schools partnered with Garrett College to create tire planters decorated with student artwork. Students brainstormed themes, voted on one, created art on rice paper related to the theme, and used a decoupage technique to attach the art to painted and primed tires. The finished planters were placed around the community to beautify areas and displayed until fall. The presentation highlights how art in schools and the community benefits Garrett County.

7. How to make a Tire Planter:
Go to a local tire shop
and ask them to donate
well worn tires.
Cut the tires with a saw.

8. Flip the tires inside out
and clean them.

9. Spray prime the tires, then paint them with
exterior latex. Let dry and add a 2nd coat.

10. The students suggest themes for their planters.
Then they vote on one theme.

11. The students create art on rice paper using pens,
fabric markers, and permanent dyes.
The art is based on the theme.

12. Decoupage the art onto the tire using Golden Gel Medium Soft Gloss.
Let dry. Spray seal tire with acrylic gloss sealant. Let dry.
Staple wire fencing to inside hole on tire.

13. Get permission to place the planter on the business or homeowner’s
property. Place planter in yard, add mulch, add a bag of potting soil,
And flowering plants. Mulch around plants and water.

14. Display until fall and place in
storage before a hard freeze.

15. In addition, we painted a buddy bench built by Northern High School students.
We used the same decoupage techniques.
