The genome of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster was sequenced in 2000. It contains approximately 180 million base pairs organized into four pairs of chromosomes. Analysis of the genome revealed over 13,600 genes and provided important insights into development, physiology, behavior, and human disease.
