1. The ONE THAT GOT AWAY
It was an ordinary day. I was there leaning against the massive earthy trunk of the acacia tree
far across the meadow of our farm. I look up to the calmblue sky above me while the wind was
perfectly soothing my skin refreshing the soul inside me. While I was lost with nature, a
question suddenly emerged in my ever-wondering mind.
“What would I be now, if I said yes to him?”
Maybe it’s just the work of our subconscious to trigger our unsteady mind
It was four years ago since the last time I mentioned his name.
I felt a little bit guilty for the thoughts in my head. I have a perfect man, a perfect husband, and
a perfect father to my son. He is 15-year older than me, and I find it interesting for the both of
us. I never regret that I marry my husband. For others, age gap maybe a problem but Gael
always see to it that he’s treating me equal to him. I must be the luckiest woman for I have
what other women are always asking for.
I was in the middle of pondering and trying to imagine the answer of my curiosity when my son
called me.
“Mama, let’s go home.”
I picked up the satiny cloth I used to sit upon and got up.
‘’Okay, tell your papa we’re going now.”
My husband was talking with our farm’s caretakers who happened to be his friends way back in
high school. He was with these men after lunch, and I could hear their laughs while they talked
about their life before when they’re still young.
“You okay, hon?”
“Yeah, I…maybe just tired.”
I did not notice that I have been so silent while in the car.
“ You look confused , you sure you’re fine?”
Gael is a man that could easily read my facial expression. He could quickly notice if something’s
bothering me.
“Yes honey, I just need to rest maybe.” I smiled at him.
2. “Rocky, don’t be stubborn to mama when we’re home, you hear that?”
“Yes, papa.”
Our son was busy playing with his Rubics cube.
Gael and I decided to never expose Rocky yet with mobile games until he’ll reach 10 years old.
We want to expose him with books and other brain and skill-enhancement activities.
I am a teacher and Gael is a businessman and we both know how important it is to discipline
our child during this time where technology is so advanced and could easily corrupt young
minds. Even before when we’re not married yet, we already talked about this. Good thing, we
have the same side about training our child.
It was already dark when we reached home. I direct our son to his room and helped him
changed his clothes.
I was about to close the windows of Rocky’s room when a red light caught my eyes.
It was a patrol car roving around our places. They started doing it after on of our neighbor was
robbed by unidentified men. Luckily, no one died.
It was the red light that stunned me.
It’s been many years but it still pinch my mind.
