2. The mostabundant elementintheuniverse is hydrogen,
which makesup aboutthree-quarters of all
matter!Heliummakesup most of the remaining25%.
Oxygenis thethird-mostabundant element intheuniverse.
All oftheother elements are relativelyrare.
The chemicalcompositionof Earthisquitea bitdifferent
fromthatof theuniverse. The mostabundant elementin
theEarth's crust isoxygen, makingup46.6%ofEarth's mass.
Siliconisthe second mostabundant element(27.7%),
followed byaluminum (8.1%),iron(5.0%),calcium(3.6%),
sodium (2.8%),potassium(2.6%).and magnesium (2.1%).
These eightelementsaccount for approximately98.5%ofthe

3. totalmass of theEarth's crust.Ofcourse, theEarth's crust is
only theouter portionofthe Earth.Future research willtell
us about thecompositionofthe mantleand core.
The mostabundant elementinthehuman bodyis oxygen,
makingup about65% ofthe weightofeachperson. Carbonis
thesecond-most abundant element,makingup 18%ofthe
body.Although youhave more hydrogenatoms thanany
other typeofelement,the mass ofahydrogen atomisso
much less thanthatofthe other elementsthatitsabundance
comes inthirdat10% bymass.
