¿What is?
 Continuous quality dissolves the mechanisms for achieving quality into the
fabric of the organization pursuing it. It replaces the industrial,
complicated-systems strategy of using QA as an enforcer with a complex-
systems strategy more suited to post-industrial business.
The Boundary-Spanning Mirror
 Adaptive communication between disciplines, or for that matter between
microservice teams, is a critical component of continuous design.
 The fluidity with which the components of a digital business can effect
these translations is a key determinant of quality.
Practicing Continuous Design
 Continuous design presents a set of principles for conducting useful
conversations with customers.
 In a sense, we’ve come full circle, from “Does the software meet the spec?”
to “Does the service meet the spec?” In the process, though, we’ve
dramatically expanded our expectations of the kinds of requirements the
spec must capture.
 • Software and service
 • Failure and success
 • Internal and external journeys
 • Design and operations
THE OPPOSITE OF A PROMISE
 Promise theory turns industrial control on its head. Companies typically try
to accomplish complex tasks by compelling participation rather than by
soliciting promises. In the language of promise theory, they create and try
to enforce obligations.
Unifying the Mirror and the Reflection
 Promise theory offers a concrete language for modeling the kinds of
complex socio-technical systems that make up infused digital services.
 Promise theory unifies the boundary-spanning mirror and its reflection by
unifying design, operations, and validation. Design becomes a matter of
determining what promises to make and how to keep them.
