The Lenape people performed an annual ceremony called Gamwing or the Big House Ceremony to give thanks to spiritual beings. The ceremony took place in a large building representing the Lenape conception of the universe. During adolescence, boys and girls underwent rituals to prove their maturity, such as spending time alone in nature. The Lenape also held rituals for important events like planting, harvest, births and deaths. They believed that fasting and other rituals could give people special powers to communicate with spirits. Burial rituals involved washing and dressing the body, then placing it in the ground with personal items for their journey to the afterlife.
