The Key To Typing

Editor's Notes

  1. The key to typingSafeAccurateFast
  2. What are the good habits for successful keyboarding? If you remember these five words, you can remember the five important habits for successful keyboarding.ClearSeatFeetFingersEyes
  3. When you think of Clear, think about your workspace. Is it messy?Clean up your workspace so that it is neat and ready for you to work.
  4. A messy workspace can make it difficult for you to focus on your work.Too much stuff can get in the way, cramping your body, restricting free movement.Keep your workspace clean and neat.
  5. When you think of seat, what will that remind you to do?(pause)First, sit directly in front of your computer. Your keyboard should be centered in front of you, allowing your body to stay balanced.Your seat should be at a comfortable height for you in relationship to the keyboard. If it’s too high or too low, adjust your seat or desk. Your keyboard needs to be comfortably close to your body but not so close that you’re cramped. Use your hand span to check to see if the distance is good. You should be able to sit so that your hands are in front of you.and your elbows should be by your side, not sticking out like your ready to fly away.
  6. Use good posture so that one part of your body doesn’t get stressed , twisted, or overworked.Sit up fairly straight so that your back and neck are comfortable.Avoid leaning forward or backward in your seat.Keeping your body aligned will help you stay safe and healthy.
  7. Our next good habit involves Feet.Where should your feet be when you’re using the computer?Keep your feet flat on the floor, centered in front of you. If your feet can’t touch the floor, consider changing your chair or moving to a different seat that allows you to stay balanced. If those options don’t work for you, perhaps you can sit on something to help you sit higher, closer to your desk or table.
  8. What do you need to do with your fingers when you are typing? When you think, Fingers, think about where they should rest on the keyboard.—on the home keys.
  9. Put your fingers on the home keys. If your index fingers are on F and J, what letters are between them? That’s right, G and H. G and H stand for “Go Home.”After typing a letter, quickly move your fingers back to the home position so that they can be ready for the next stroke. Your other fingers need to stay on the home keys.
  10. Keep your fingers slightly curved as you rest at the keyboard.
  11. As you learn to keyboard, try to always type letters with the correct finger. Each finger is assigned keys that work best for that finger.Soon, you will be typing without even thinking about where each letter is located. It will be automatic, like riding your bike. You won’t even need to think about typing.
  12. Do good drivers look at their feet when they drive? The most efficient typists type without looking at their fingers or keyboard.Eyes need to be focused on the computer screen or on the work copy.
  13. When you think of the word “Eye,” what should you remember?Looking at the keyboard to find the keys will slow your typing speed down. It may not seem like your slower as you learn to type but it will keep you from progressing to a more advanced level.
  14. Do you want to be a good typist, to type quickly, accurately, and with little effort? Then what are realistic keyboarding goals? Most people want to type quickly but that is not the first goal for success. When learning to ride your bike, do you first try to race down a hill?First, you will want to develop safe, healthy habits to keep your back, neck, wirsts, and arms healthy. It is easier to practice good habits than it is to break a bad habit.Second, you want to be able to type without looking at the keyboard. Next, you want to be able to type accurately, avoiding mistakes that take time to correct. Practice will help you get there. Finally, after you have reached these first three goals and developed these good habits, you can focus on increasing your typing speed. You will be typing quickly and with little effort. You’ll free up time to do other things.
  15. Developing these good keyboarding habits will make you feel like you have a few extra hands on the keyboard. What are the 5 words that we want to remember?ClearSeatFingersFeetEyesStay focused, practice, and do your best to become a proficient typist. This skill will be used in many areas of learning and living. Take the time to learn your good habits and become the best that you can be.
