Ever wonder what the Holy
Spirit does all day every day?
Baptists typically stay away
from the subject of the Holy
Spirit
Fear of being labeled
“charismatic” keeps us from
lots of blessings in this area

3. WHAT DOES HE DO, REALLY?
The Holy Spirit gets a bum rap on a
daily basis because of fear, ignorance,
traditional beliefs, etc.
The end result is seeing weird un-biblical
actions by the left and disregarding some of
His gifts on the far right of the spectrum
Neither extreme is correct
The Lord WANTS us to understand the Spirit

4. 5 “But now I am going to Him who sent Me; and
none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’
6 But because I have said these things to you,
sorrow has filled your heart. 7 But I tell you the
truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for
if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to
you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. 8 And He,
when He comes, will convict the world concern-
ing sin and righteousness and judgement;

Me; 10 and concerning righteousness, because I
go to the Father and you no longer see Me;
11 and concerning judgment, because the ruler

12 “I have many more things to say to you, but
you cannot bear them now. 13 But when He, the
Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide

7. THE DISCIPLES WERE SCARED
Ch 13-16 have this underlying theme of
their fear of what was to come after Jesus
I don’t think we would be any different
Knowing of their sudden insecurity, Jesus
explains in detail exactly how the Holy
Spirit would minister to them
It’s important to note that the Spirit cane
to the Church, NOT the world as Jesus had

He works in and thru the Church
Just as Jesus had to have a physical
“body” to win people, so He uses the
“body of Christ” to do the work now

Not because God the Spirit is incapable without
the church, rather He chooses to do it that way

14. 1.) THEIR REACTIONS…
Vv 4-5, He knows he has discouraged
them and filled them with sorrow
They felt as if they’d be left as
orphans– remember anything like
this?
He took this opportunity to tell them
just how He would still be with them,
yet physically absent

15. 2.) JESUS’ SOLUTION…
V7 tells us we’re better off if He
leaves us– Really??
He uses the Greek word for
advantage– ‘symphero’
It means, “It is more profitable for us
if He goes away”– hard to believe?
Sounds wrong, but very true…

16. TWO REASONS…
1.) Jesus was limited in a human
body, the Holy Spirit is not
Contained in one body, He couldn’t
be everywhere at once
The H.S. is omnipresent
H.S. can strengthen each Believer
from within simultaneously bringing
peace to panic and fortitude for fear!

17. TWO REASONS…
2.) Only through His departure by
death, could He provide us the way
of Salvation
Without His atoning Sacrifice or
propitiation, the would’ve been no
Gospel
The propitiation opened the door for
us to actually enter Heaven

V9 points back to the worlds’
unbelief
Greek word convict is ‘elegcho’– it
means to “bring to light, expose, to
reprove”
Also can mean to “pronounce the
verdict”

V10 says the the H.S. shows us the
need to be righteous

Isaiah 64:6 shows that its not good
enough– we reflect HIM

3.) Convicting the world of the
Judgment of God
V11 says the judgment of God is
coming on the Worlds
More correct would be, “The
execution of God’s judgment for this
world is coming”
People know inherently its coming…

22. 4.) H.S. MINISTRY TO US…
Vv 12-15 tell us the HS will teach us
all and make us understand Scripture
Two theological words you should know
Inspiration and Illumination
Inspiration is what happened to the Bible
writers– all is revealed we need no more
Illumination is when your read or hear
preaching and you understand

23. TAKE HOME!
Insecurity is cured with total
dependence on Christ
The Holy Spirit doesn’t convict
to drive us to despair, but into
the open arms of Jesus
No Conversion Without Conviction:
and no Conviction w/o the HS using
the Word and Witness of Believers
