Smarter Innovation at Scale
The Hartree Centre provides high performance computing resources and expertise to help organizations use computational modeling and simulation to develop better products faster and cheaper. It has several large supercomputers totalling over 120,000 CPU cores and 24 petabytes of storage. The Center works with clients in engineering, manufacturing, life sciences, energy, finance, and transport. It also conducts research in areas like machine learning, algorithms, and data-centric computing architectures. Federated Galaxy: Biomedical Computing at the Frontier
Biomedical data exploration requires integrative analyses of large datasets using a diverse ecosystem of tools. For more than a decade, the Galaxy project (https://galaxyproject.org) has provided researchers with a web-based, user-friendly, scalable data analysis framework complemented by a rich ecosystem of tools (https://usegalaxy.org/toolshed) used to perform genomic, proteomic, metabolomic, and imaging experiments. Galaxy can be deployed on the cloud (https://launch.usegalaxy.org), institutional computing clusters, and personal computers, or readily used on a number of public servers (e.g., https://usegalaxy.org). In this paper, we present our plan and progress towards creating Galaxy-as-a-Service—a federation of distributed data and computing resources into a panoptic analysis platform. Users can leverage a pool of public and institutional resources, in addition to plugging-in their private resources, helping answer the challenge of resource divergence across various Galaxy instances and enabling seamless analysis of biomedical data.

ICHEC - Observation systems, technologies and big data
ICHEC is a national technology center established in 2005 to work on high performance computing, big data, and data analytics. It has expertise in processing large remote sensing datasets using workflows on HPC systems. ICHEC proposes establishing an "exploitation portal" to process remote sensing data as it arrives in Ireland using automated workflows. This would allow for producing climate and environmental products for Ireland as well as combining remote sensing data with other datasets and models through data assimilation techniques. ICHEC argues it could provide a platform for curating useful remote sensing datasets and products for Ireland over the long term.
IRUS-UK at Repository Fringe 2015 - Jo Alcock
IRUS-UK is a national aggregation service that collects usage statistics from UK institutional repositories. It processes raw download data into COUNTER-compliant statistics. A small piece of code is added to repository software to gather basic data for each download and send it to the IRUS-UK server. This data is then displayed through a web interface, SUSHI service, and API. Future priorities for IRUS-UK include increasing participating repositories, implementing the tracker for more software, expanding reports, leveraging additional metadata, and international collaboration.
EGI Engage: Impact & Results
The EGI-Engage project ran from 2015-2017 with funding from the European Union to expand federated computing and storage services for researchers. During the project, usage of these services increased substantially, with over 730,000 CPU cores and 650 petabytes of storage used to support over 200 research collaborations, including large projects like CTA and the LHC. The project also helped establish best practices for cloud computing interoperability and contributed to defining the European Open Science Cloud.

Lead-acid battery is widely utilized to provide electricity
in vehicle. There are dozens of system is used the lead-acid
battery for power supply e.g., in electric car, mobile robot,
electric forklift, etc. Nevertheless, overuse could
significantly effect on life time of battery. In this paper,
remote monitoring of lead-acid battery for electric forklift is
proposed. We develop a data acquisition system to monitor
battery parameters by developing dedicated hardware and
software. Inter-integrated circuit (i2c), Analog to digital
converter (ADC) and Universal Asynchronous
Receiver/Transmitter (UART) are used as the protocol
communication. The wireless local area network (WLAN) is
used as the backbone networks. In experimental result, the
data are successfully send from microcontroller to server.
Furthermore, data is displayed on server monitor and stored
in database storage.

This paper presents our preliminary results with ABEONA, an edge-to-cloud architecture that allows migrating tasks from low-energy, resource-constrained devices on the edge up to the cloud. Our preliminary results on artificial and real world datasets show that it is possible to execute workloads in a more efficient manner energy-wise by scaling horizontally at the edge, without negatively affecting the execution runtime.

Water data management platforms use data sharing platforms to integrate data from multiple agencies in a standardized format. These platforms incorporate a hydrological geofabric to establish a single point of truth for water mapping, and use cloud computing to provide scalable access and analysis of large water datasets. For example, a demonstration showed how sensor data, water storage data, and river flow models could be integrated in a sensor cloud to help manage water sharing in a catchment.

EPCC MSc industry projects

EPCC supports multi-disciplinary research through access to its high performance computing facilities, training courses, and collaborative projects. It houses various supercomputing systems totaling over 150,000 CPU cores for researchers to use. EPCC also works with over 1000 companies through technology transfer and industrial collaborations in areas like simulation, data processing, and cloud computing. One example is its partnership with Rolls-Royce on a £15 million virtual gas turbine engine simulation project.
Introduction to the EOSC-hub project
EOSC-hub is a project that aims to create the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) Hub by federating existing service providers and offering a portfolio of services, software, and data for research. It involves over 100 partners from 20 European infrastructures. The project is funded for 36 months from January 2018 to December 2020 with over €33 million from the European Commission's Horizon 2020 program. Key activities of EOSC-hub include integrating existing services, establishing common processes and policies, operating federation services, and supporting the adoption of services by research communities.

EPCC MSc industry projects
EPCC is a supercomputing centre at the University of Edinburgh that has been self-funded for over 28 years. It has over 110 staff and £5 million in annual turnover. Introduction to the EOSC-hub project

Public micro mobility services (bikes, e-bikes, e-scooters) have a direct impact on the environment and the low-carbon economy. In parallel, sensing/monitoring urban air quality is a known need for any smart city to raise population awareness on health risks. ERMES is a technology transfer experiemnt project, supported by H2020 Smart4All aimed at improving the functionality of the air quality sensor kit of Cyclopolis to be safely mounted on public micro mobility fleets. It is enhanced with LoraWAN connectivity by exploiting the LoRaWAN@NOI network (https://lorawan.beacon.bz.it/) and will reduce the power consumption of the sensor kit. The system benefits of the the open source Chirpstack project and the data collected are going to be stored on InfluxDB, shared through and open RESTfull API. eTRIKS at Pharma IT 2017, London
The document summarizes the European Translational Research Information and Knowledge Management Service (eTRIKS) project. It describes how eTRIKS created an open-source translational data platform based on tranSMART to enable data sharing across studies. Over 30 months, eTRIKS supported over 60 projects, developing best practices for data harmonization, legal agreements, and sustainability. However, fully meeting project goals proved challenging, and the pharmaceutical industry undercommitted resources. ETSI Experiential Networked Industry Specification Group (ENI ISG) work on defining a Cognitive Network Management architecture using Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques and context-aware policies to adjust offered services based on changes in user needs, environmental conditions and business goals. The intention is that the use of Artificial Intelligence techniques in the network management system should solve some of the problems of future network deployment and operations. The idea was to predict the customer experience, and their perception of the O2 network at both the user and area levels to drive the network and marketing investments. Here is why and how we got there.
In order to measure and predict customer network experience, O2 needed a streaming big data solution which would consume billions of events coming in from the network, in real-time, to measure the performance of the network as experienced by the customer. It was important to build a platform to gather all the relevant data; to co-relate that with the customer satisfaction index (CSI) surveys to understand the relationship of metrics to score. We applied machine learning methods to predict the CSI for all users on the network. Customer insights from the network helped us to build customer segmentations which are shaping various marketing and digital propositions at O2.
- The overall solution was based on a hybrid architecture, where Open Source technologies were brought together with Tableau visualization which enabled O2 to keep the maintenance cost down to a minimum.
- In order to have quick ROI, the solution was built as the prototype which continued to evolve and now currently handles 30 billion transactions a day, continuously streaming into the platform, and predicting customer experience for 35m+ users.
The O2 solution continued to expand every year to accommodate multi-fold growth in traffic, and to accommodate additional features. The decision to move from a community edition Hadoop to the Hortonworks-based platform enabled us to have a supported, faster, and more reliable service. The migration to Hortonworks was completed in October 2018 which has given us the reliable platform to expand the analytics use cases across the wider O2 businesses.

Dennis Kehoe - ECO 15: Digital connectivity in healthcare
AIMES has created a Trustworthy Research Environment (TRE) within its HealthCLOUD, which allows authorized data scientists and analysts to access sensitive healthcare data in an ISO27001-certified and IG Toolkit-compliant environment. The TRE includes mechanisms for provisioning data through interoperability and data pipelines, and an analytics zone where data can be analyzed using tools like R and Spark. AIMES is applying this infrastructure and data science capabilities to focus on care pathways for conditions like epilepsy, COPD, and alcohol abuse through its Connected Health Cities program. As more rich datasets become available through regional and national health information exchanges, data science has the potential to transform clinical areas such as stroke prevention and mental health crisis prevention.

We live in an era of cloud computing. Many of the services in the life sciences are keenly planning cloud transformations, seeking to create globally distributed ecosystems of harmonised data based on standards from organisations like GA4GH. CINECA faces similar challenges, gathering cohort datasets from all over the globe, many of which are pinned in place, due to their size, legal restrictions, or other considerations. But is “bringing compute to the data” always the right choice? In this webinar, based on experiences from the Human Cell Atlas Data Coordination Platform and other projects from EMBL-EBI, we will explore the concept of “data gravity”: The idea that whilst there are forces that may hold data in one place, there are others that require it to be mobile. We’ll consider how effectively planning a cloud strategy requires consideration of the gravity of datasets, and the impact it may have on team skills required, incentives for good practice, and storage and compute costs.

End-to-end pipeline agility - Berlin Buzzwords 2024
We describe how we achieve high change agility in data engineering by eliminating the fear of breaking downstream data pipelines through end-to-end pipeline testing, and by using schema metaprogramming to safely eliminate boilerplate involved in changes that affect whole pipelines.
A quick poll on agility in changing pipelines from end to end indicated a huge span in capabilities. For the question "How long time does it take for all downstream pipelines to be adapted to an upstream change," the median response was 6 months, but some respondents could do it in less than a day. When quantitative data engineering differences between the best and worst are measured, the span is often 100x-1000x, sometimes even more.
A long time ago, we suffered at Spotify from fear of changing pipelines due to not knowing what the impact might be downstream. We made plans for a technical solution to test pipelines end-to-end to mitigate that fear, but the effort failed for cultural reasons. We eventually solved this challenge, but in a different context. In this presentation we will describe how we test full pipelines effectively by manipulating workflow orchestration, which enables us to make changes in pipelines without fear of breaking downstream.
Making schema changes that affect many jobs also involves a lot of toil and boilerplate. Using schema-on-read mitigates some of it, but has drawbacks since it makes it more difficult to detect errors early. We will describe how we have rejected this tradeoff by applying schema metaprogramming, eliminating boilerplate but keeping the protection of static typing, thereby further improving agility to quickly modify data pipelines without fear.

ViewShift: Hassle-free Dynamic Policy Enforcement for Every Data Lake
Dynamic policy enforcement is becoming an increasingly important topic in today’s world where data privacy and compliance is a top priority for companies, individuals, and regulators alike. In these slides, we discuss how LinkedIn implements a powerful dynamic policy enforcement engine, called ViewShift, and integrates it within its data lake. We show the query engine architecture and how catalog implementations can automatically route table resolutions to compliance-enforcing SQL views. Such views have a set of very interesting properties: (1) They are auto-generated from declarative data annotations. (2) They respect user-level consent and preferences (3) They are context-aware, encoding a different set of transformations for different use cases (4) They are portable; while the SQL logic is only implemented in one SQL dialect, it is accessible in all engines.
