The Independent Activity is a requirement to complete both Core Requirements and Global Learning Requirements. On your own, select to participate in an activity related to women's issues worldwide and write a paper documenting your learning experience. Examples of activities include, but are not limited to, interviewing women's rights activists, visiting an NGO that deals with women and development, attending a lecture series, etc. Some suggestions include: Contacting the Office of Volunteer Services at FIU, the Women's Center at FIU, and/or Women's and Gender Studies at FIU to inquire about lectures sponsored by these Programs during the semester that you could attend. Tuesday Times Roundtable sponsored by the Global Learning Initiative, on issues dealing with women's issues. Unchaining dreams
95 students from SPA and 26 from St Andrew’s Cathedral participated in a joint project on human trafficking. They researched specific forms of modern slavery in designated parts of the world in small groups. The students created awareness videos about human trafficking that were uploaded to YouTube. The organizers aim to expand the project to more schools and include a service learning component where students work with local anti-trafficking organizations.
The VVLead Fellowship
The VVLead Fellowship Program aimed to support a global network of emerging and established women leaders. It provided a tailored fellowship experience through online courses, peer exchanges, challenge grants, and other activities. Over three years, the program trained 330 fellows from 75 countries in areas like economic empowerment, violence against women, and cultural issues. The blended learning approach and international network helped fellows increase their capacity, collaborate across borders, and empower women worldwide.

Local nonviolent activists and movements, along with the tactics and strategies they use, will always be the primary drivers of bottom-up change. However, external actors, both governmental and non-governmental, can play an important role in supporting those activists and movements and shaping the environment for civic activism. Effective 21st century diplomacy, notably, must emphasize development and civilian power as much as military might.
Still, there are challenges to state support for indigenous movements. These include constraints imposed by normal bilateral relations and conflicting geo-strategic interests. This module will address the following questions:
- What are the pros and cons of external support (notably governmental support) to nonviolent activists?
- What tools do diplomats and other external actors have at their disposal to enhance the effectiveness of nonviolent activists and movements?
- Where have those tools been used effectively or not effectively?
- What are key lessons for future engagement between diplomats/policy-makers and nonviolent activists?

Both mentors and mentees find the program rewarding and impactful in helping students achieve their dreams.
DVC-2010 PONGA'S COPY

How can community-based participatory research contribute to Program Science
This document summarizes the development and evaluation of a community-based participatory research program called Pouvoir Partager/Pouvoirs Partagés (PP/PP) aimed at empowering women living with HIV to make thoughtful decisions about disclosing or not disclosing their HIV status. Over three cycles from 2002-2011, the program was developed with input from women living with HIV, implemented as a pilot, improved based on evaluation, scaled up provincially, and adapted for other cultural contexts. Evaluation found the program improved participants' ability to disclose their status proactively and their sense of control and self-efficacy around disclosure decisions.

This document summarizes an event organized by American Women for International Understanding (AWIU) on March 4, 2015 at the National Press Club in Washington D.C. The event included a Youth Consortium and Leadership Roundtable on career opportunities in international relations with 11 panelists from fields like the FBI, State Department, and UN. It also featured AWIU's annual celebration of International Women of Courage award winners. DVC-2010 PONGA'S COPY

This document summarizes the development and evaluation of a community-based participatory research program called Pouvoir Partager/Pouvoirs Partagés (PP/PP) aimed at empowering women living with HIV to make thoughtful decisions about disclosing or not disclosing their HIV status. Over three cycles from 2002-2011, the program was developed with input from women living with HIV, implemented as a pilot, improved based on evaluation, scaled up provincially, and adapted for other cultural contexts. Evaluation found the program improved participants' ability to disclose their status proactively and their sense of control and self-efficacy around disclosure decisions.

In this case it happened January 2015 when the suspect Cortez Sims busted into an apartment building in one of our projects and he began shooting. He shot 4 people one which was a one year old child. When police responded they found all four people inside and one of the victims did not survive. All of the victims were transported to the hospital for treatment. The one year old child was paralyzed and the other victims were later released. One of the victims Bianca Horton was fed up with all of the violence going on and decided that she was going to cooperate and began to tell the investigators that she knew the suspect and she would testify against him. The reason that people were scared of Cortez Sims is because he is a big time ranking gang member even though he was 17 at the time. Investigators were able to get enough evidence against Cortez Sims and took out arrest warrants. He was eventually arrested in Knoxville for the quadruple shootings and the murder of one of the victims. When he was arrested he was taken to juvenile. In the Chattanoogan:
Juvenile Court Judge Rob Philyaw on Thursday morning ordered that 17-year-old Cortez Sims be tried as an adult in a College Hill Courts shooting that left one woman dead, a toddler paralyzed, and two others wounded. This was a victory for the prosecution. Police at the time knew that they had a very good case against Cortez Sims because not only did they have physical evidence of him at the crime scene they also had a witness that was going to testify against him. Two years later when the case was going to go to trial, the police responded to yet another shooting.
Bianca Horton, 26, was found
dead
on the side of the road in the 2100 block of Elder Street on the side of Missionary shortly after 9 a.m. with multiple bullet casings on the ground beside her. The mother of four had been a

in the case against the man accused of shooting her daughter (Chattanooga Times Free Press). This was not only a huge blow to the case but it also woke a lot of the people up to the violence that has been going on. The reason that we believe that she was killed was because she was going to testify against Cortez Sims. As of to this date we have not be able to solve her murder, we have suspects but as of now we cannot prove that they did it. There are many twists that have played out in this case and it set to go to trial this year. The media has been really involved in this case and has been covering every aspect of the case. In this case I really don't think that the investigators or the prosecutors could have seen this coming with the murder of Bianca Horton. We knew that Cortez Sims was a high ranking gang member but were unaware that he had that much power. This case has opened the eyes of many people in the community an.

significant role in maintaining the ecological equilibrium of our planet.Land serves as the foundation for all human activities and provides the necessary materials for
these activities. As the most crucial natural resource, its utilization by humans results in different
'Land uses,' which are determined by both human activities and the physical characteristics of the
land.
The utilization of land is impacted by human needs and environmental factors. In countries
like India, rapid population growth and the emphasis on extensive resource exploitation can lead
to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.
Accurate understanding of land use and cover is imperative for the development planning
