2. What is “Impossible Burger”?
• Impossible burger is a
meatless burger.
• It tastes just like meat.
• The Impossible Burger is a
GMO (Genetically Modified
Organisms) food.

3. Are meatless burgers
considered as normal food?
• First of all, it is highly
processed.
• Their products are highly
processed and scientifically
engineered food.
• It takes a lot of ingredients
and food processing to
replicate the taste.

4. Side-by-side
comparison of meatless
burgers, along with a
real, beef burger
• Sodium, saturated fat is much
higher in meatless burger
compare to regular beef burger.
• To match with nutrient
content what is normally found
in beef meatless burgers are
often fortified with vitamins and
minerals.
• Huge amount of saturated fat
comes from coconut oil added
for flavor in the meatless burger.

5. Impossible
Burger is a
GMO food
A KEY INGREDIENT OF THE
IMPOSSIBLE BURGER IS A
PROTEIN CALLED SOY
LEGHEMOGLOBIN (SLH).
SLH IS DERIVED FROM
GENETICALLY ENGINEERED
YEAST.
IN NATURAL FORM SLH IS
FOUND IN THE ROOT NODULES
OF SOYBEAN PLANTS.
SLH GENE IS DERIVED FROM
THE SOYBEAN AND INSERTED
INTO A STRAIN OF YEAST BY
USING GENETIC ENGINEERING
TECHNOLOGY.
GENETICALLY MODIFIED (GM)
YEAST IS GROWN IN
INDUSTRIAL SCALE BY
FERMENTATION PROCESS.
THE SLH IS THEN ISOLATED
FROM THE YEAST AND ADDED
TO THE IMPOSSIBLE BURGER.
6. Is Impossible Burger safe?
• FDA expressed concern that SLH has never been consumed by
humans and may be an allergen.
• The FDA concluded, “FDA believes that the arguments presented,
individually and collectively, do not establish the safety of SLH for
consumption, nor do they point to a general recognition of safety.”
• FDA also pointed out that the safety information submitted by
Impossible Foods was not specific enough.
• According to FDA “Although proteins are a part of the human
food supply, not all proteins are safe.”Photo credit:

7. More arguments on safety:
Impossible Foods argued that SLH is
safe to eat because of the similarity in
its 3D structure to hemoglobin and
myoglobin.
But the FDA replied, “Conformational
similarity or functional similarity among
proteins is not an indication of the
safety of proteins for consumption.”
Dr. Michael Hansen, senior scientist with
Consumers Union and member of the
GMOScience advisory board, “Just because
proteins have similar functions or similar
three-dimensional structures, doesn’t
mean that they’re similar. They can have a
very different amino acid sequence, and
just slight changes can have impacts.”
FDA also raised the issue that the SLH
product extracted from the GM yeast is
only 73% pure where the rest is made
up of 46 additional yeast proteins, some
of which are unidentified.

8. Allergenicity of Impossible
food:
• The yeast proteins can be overtly toxic, and we do not know if it
could cause immune reactions and allergies.
• FDA was unconvinced by the Allergenonline database given by
Impossible foods and said, “does not provide evidence of the lack
of sensitization/allergenic potential of SLH.”
• FDA also said, “Analyses using other software, such as SVM
module-based software, indicate that SLH could be an allergen.”

9. Conclusion:
- Everyone has the right to choose their own food and decide what they
want to eat.
- People who want to eat food which is pure, least processed, free from
GMOs, produced with least chemicals, and is least synthesized should
know the truth behind “Impossible burger” before choosing it as a
healthy option.
- The best choice will be considering real food as healthy food option
rather than choosing processed food.

The topic for my food position assignment is “Impossible Burger”.
The first thing comes to our mind after hearing the name “Impossible Burger” is that it is a healthy burger. The fact of being meatless makes us think it is better for our health. Being biased to the fact of being meatless we often underestimate the fact that how highly processed food it is.
The “Impossible Burger” does not contain any meat. This food is highly processed to bring its meaty taste by using scientific engineering processes. A lots of ingredients are used to give its fake taste of meat.
According to the data of the comparison between meatless burgers, along with a real, beef burger we can see meatless burger contains higher amount of sodium, saturated fat which can cause health problem. Saturated fat coming from the flavoring agent can cause artery clogging.
Since “Impossible Burger’ is a GMO food it is not a good choice of food for people who like to avoid GMO food.
Impossible food has been denied by the FDA for several reasons for its safety on our health. The decisions are based on the safety of SLH consumption, its possible allergic effect on human body. The protein content of “Impossible Burger” is also questioned for safety.
FDA denied the “Impossible food” for its genetically modified structure which can be unsafe on human body. Conformational similarity or functional similarity does not indicate the safety of the protein coming from “Impossible food”.
Impossible food contains SLH which can be an allergen to human body. Enough evidence was not given for the allergenic potential of SLH. Therefore, it is not safe against allergic reaction.
From my research on “Impossible Burger” I am not convinced to choose meatless product over other food option since it is highly processed food. Real food is the actual food option to be healthy rather than processed food.
