Teflon is a brand name for PTFE-based formulations developed by Chemours, a subsidiary of DuPont, which discovered the compound. Since it is a high molecular weight compound made entirely of carbon and fluorine, PTFE is classified as a fluorocarbon solid.

3. Dr. Roy J. Plunkett discovered Teflon in April of 1938. A
scientist with DuPont's Jackson Laboratory in New Jersey,
Plunkett studied Freon refrigerants. One day, he noticed
that a sample transformed into polytetrafluoroethylene, the
chemical name for Teflon. In its natural state, Teflon
appears as a colorless and odorless powder. Despite
emerging by accident, this chemical quickly gained
attention due to its special properties that make it the
slipperiest material ever developed. Most industries utilize
Teflon in manufacturing, and it became a household word
by being used on non-stick kitchenware. People have
pondered the question, if nothing sticks to Teflon, how can
Teflon stick to a frying pan or other cooking implement?
Scientists accomplish this by blasting a pan with grit and
ceramics to form indents in the steel and then spraying on
coats of decreasing stickiness.
4. In honor of Plunkett's revolutionary achievement, President George H.W.
Bush awarded him the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, and
The Plastics Academy’s Hall of Fame and the National Inventors Hall of
Fame inducted him into their organizations. DuPont still benefits from its
connection to Teflon, and it runs a yearly contest awarding those who invent
creative things to do with the substance.
