This document provides an index for The Great Gatsby, outlining sections on the author F. Scott Fitzgerald, a plot summary, character analyses, and the writer's opinion. It concludes with a reference to the end of the novel.
Frances Scott Fitzgerald was born in 1896 in St.Paul Minnesota.
Belongs to the group of authors of the lost generation and was a lot influenced by the jazz age.
Died in 1940 in Hollywood California
Nick Caraway, the narrator of the story, is a typical calm Midwesterner who went to live to New York in order to work at the bond business.
He lives more accurately in the west egg long Island. The place for the 1922 new riches. Contrarily to the people in east egg who were typical aristocrats West eggers were young rich men who had great pleasure to show off their Money. The perfect example of this is nick’s neighbour Jay Gatsby. A mysterious men that frequently held huge parties at his mansion. This character is deeply in love for the narrators cousin, Daisy, a aristocrat women who lives in east egg with her husband Tom. Gatsby and Daisy were in a relationship during the war but she left him because he was not rich enough.
Tom and Daisy relationship changes a lot as the book continues. At the beginning Daisy we can see Daisy catching Tom talking to his lover.
In the next 2 chapters they do not appear together. Tom takes nick and his lover to a party in new York and at Gatsby’s request Nick invites him and Daisy to have tea at his place. This last chapter is really important in the context of the book as it is the reunite between two loved ones. Gatsby and Daisy then decide to continue contacting and Daisy visits Gatsby’s house several times.
One day, both Nick and Gatsby were invited for lunch at Tom at Daisy’s house. After lunch they went to an hotel in new York and Gatsby had the intention to win Daisy and make her leave Tom. Nonetheless Tom fires that Gatsby’s wealth was illegal and Daisy says she will not leave Tom. Disappointed Gatsby decides to leave.
On the way home nick goes in Tom’s car while daisy goes in Gatsby's yellow Roll-Royce. When passing a garage nick and Tom see a body in the floor. It was Tom’s lover and accordingly to the testimonies she had been ran over by a yellow sports car.
If you want to know the rest I suggest you read the book.

Daisy: Daisy is partially based on the author’s wife Zelda. She represents the American upper class. She did not care about her daughter and she only loved Gatsby and Tom because of their money
Tom: Tom represents the hypocrisy and sexism in the society of the authors time. Although, having a lover himself he considered outrageous that his wife loved Gatsby.
Gatsby: Gatsby represents the American ideal of self made man . In America it does not matter where you come from you can be whathever you want. He also represents part of Fitzgeralds personality. The flashy celebrity who pursued and glorified wealth in order to impress the woman he loved.
Nick: If Gatsby represents one part of Fitzgerald’s personality, Nick represents the other part, the quiet, reflective Midwesterner who moved to the agitated east.
I liked this book a lot, not only because of the plot but also because of the characters that were such well developed that we could almost predict their reactions based on their personality. In addition, the way Nick narrates the whole story from a neutral point of view gives the readers a great perspective of what is happening.
