Ballad opera
Ballad opera began in 18th century England as a form of popular entertainment featuring music, costumes, and stories depicting romance and betrayal performed by amateur companies. It differed from Greek theater in its use of contemporary music and inclusion of sex and rough aspects of life. The most famous ballad opera is The Beggar's Opera from 1728 about a highwayman who loves two women and is ultimately arrested. The purpose of ballad opera was to entertain audiences with musical stories that commented on everyday life and characters.
Hugh Hefner
Hugh Hefner was born in Chicago in 1926 to conservative Protestant parents. He attended public schools in Chicago and was an average student despite his high IQ. After serving in the army during World War II, he earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois. In 1951, he started working for Esquire magazine but left to start his own magazine, Playboy, which featured Marilyn Monroe on its first cover and grew rapidly. Hefner lived a lavish lifestyle depicted in Playboy and owned mansions in Los Angeles and Chicago where he hosted celebrities. He continued leading Playboy Enterprises until his death in 2017 at age 91.

The Warner brothers - Harry, Albert, and Sam - started their film company in 1903 by acquiring a movie projector and showing films in Pennsylvania and Ohio mining towns. They opened their first theater in New Castle, Pennsylvania that year. In 1904 they founded the Pittsburgh-based Duquesne Amusement and Supply company to distribute films. By 1918 they had begun producing their own films and opened their Warner brothers studio in Hollywood. Some of their early successful films included My Four Years in Germany (1918) and the first all-talking feature film Lights of New York (1928).

In 1901, Broadway earned its famous nickname "The Great White Way" for its extensive marquee lights. Some of the most famous early 1900s musicals appeared on Broadway, though the theater district struggled financially during the Great Depression.
Hollywood
Hollywood has been the historical center of the American film industry since the early 20th century. The first film studio was established in Hollywood in 1911. By 1920, Hollywood was producing 80% of the world's films. While television and changes in the industry led production to spread out, Hollywood remains synonymous with the American film industry. It is known for launching the careers of many stars and producing thousands of films each year across many genres at its many studios.

1. F. Scott Fitzgerald had early success with his first novel This Side of Paradise in 1920. He married Zelda Sayre that same year.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
