There is no better way to spend a Monday night than joining one of B-Hive’s famous FIN AND TONICs in New York City! This time CO2Logic had the honor to be co-host for this memorable event. We had the pleasure of gathering at Flanders Investment & Trade’s beautiful space as our experts discussed the future of Sustainable Finance.

Introduction of our guest of honor, the Belgian Minister of
Finance, Johan Van Overtveldt
The Minister of Finance emphasized the
importance of finding a clear definition
of what sustainable finance truly means
and how more transparency between
institutions, practices and different
stakeholders will create more efficient
markets and help keep track of their
performance.
Brussels is currently ranked third for the
quality of its green finance behind
London and Amsterdam.

Minister Van Overtveldt was followed by Arnaud Brohé of
CO2logic
“Our policy makers can make a big
difference in creating a more sustainable
world and lower the CO2 level by putting
a higher price on carbon, setting
guidelines to define what ‘sustainability’
and ‘green’ truly means in the financial
world and stopping wasting money on
trying to save stranded assets and
neglecting demand side policies and
measures.

One of the focuses of the panel discussion turned out to be
the access to consistent data.
The panel discussion was moderated by
Satyajit Bose, Associate Director of
Sustainability of Columbia University and the
panel consisted of:
Hui Wen Chan - Vice President Corporate
Sustainability at Citi
Stephen Freedman - Head of Sustainable
Investing Solutions at UBS
James Martin - Executive Director at Morgan
Stanley’s Global Sustainable Finance Group
Amisha Parekh - Senior Product Strategist,
Sustainable Finance at Bloomberg LP
“So far, the expansion of sustainable finance
has largely been a reaction to a growing
investor demand. In the future, it will be a key
differentiator and success driver for Wealth
and Asset Managers,” Freedman believes.

Sustainable, Responsible and Impact (SRI) Investing Is Rising
Fast in a Context of Growing Investors’ Concerns on Climate
Source: US SIF Foundation, Report on US Sustainable, Responsible and Impact Investing Trends 2016
Climate change is the most significant overall environmental factor in
terms of assets, affecting $3.5 trillion in assets, a trebling in value since
2014.
Shareholders concerned about climate risk filed 93 resolutions in 2016
and negotiated a number of commitments from the target companies.
Fossil fuel restrictions or divestment policies are also on the rise.
CDP and TCFD disclosure frameworks are gaining popularity and
influence regulatory initiatives in Europe.

Our 4 Recommendations to Policy-Makers
1) Don’t Waste Public Money on Trying to Save Stranded Assets
2) Put a (Higher) Price on Carbon (& Stop Subsidizing Fossil Fuels)
3) Don’t Neglect Demand Side Policies & Measures
4) Set Guidelines to Define What ‘Sustainable’ or ‘Green’ Means in the Financial World and
Encourage Disclosure A good First Step Is to Support the Implementation of the EU
Commission Proposal for a Regulation on the Establishment of a Framework to Facilitate
Sustainable Investment and its 3 Main Goals:
(i) reorienting capital flows towards sustainable investments,
(ii) managing financial risks stemming from environmental challenges, and
(iii) fostering transparency and long-termism
