This document discusses the future of charting in the .Stat statistical information system. It describes how .Stat currently uses Flash-based charting but will transition to a new API-based charting system called GraphJS. GraphJS will generate charts from statistical data through .Stat's SDMX-JSON API and allow charts to be embedded and interactive on the web. An early prototype integrates GraphJS with .Stat and demonstrates its capabilities across different devices.

For many years Flash was the default for multimedia and to some extent visualisations

Even Adobe halted project on Flash mobile

11. POOR ACCESSIBILITY
Many developers did not consider accessibility when working with
Flash, and in the early days support was almost non-existence.

12. FLASH GOT A MAKEOVER
Indeed, flash has had a makeover in recent years

13. IMPROVEMENTS
Including in the areas of accessibility

14. TECHNOLOGY HAS MOVED ON
But advancements in technology, especially
in the area of visualisation has accelerated

15. Partly due to the increasing demands of the users which is now
moving from web 2.0 to the new internet of things and web 3.0

As a product .Stat also needs to move
forward to meet its strategic objective

A Graphical Service generates charts and maps out of
statistical data, primarily for dissemination purposes
to communicate and visualise a precise message.
