The Framework of a Backslider
Backslide means to lapse or fall backwards in your relationship with Christ. To lose interest in following and serving the Lord.
What does a backslider makes up? and how can we avoid it?

EVANGELISM 101: Lesson 1 - Biblical Foundations of EvangelismFrancis Hernandez
For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” (Romans 10:13-15)
"It (Evangelism) comes from the same Greek word for gospel (euangelion) and means, literally, “gospeling.” When we evangelize we are “gospeling” — we are spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ." - https://www.ligonier.org/learn/devotionals/what-evangelism/
Every Christian is called to do the divine task of evangelism. Evangelism is a task not just for the select churches, or for the evangelists or pastors. This is Lesson 1 of EVANGELISM 101 Series. Given last April 23, 2021 at HOPE Christian Fellowship in Guinobatan, Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro, Philippines by Ptr. Francis S. Hernandez.

Journey Through The Bible: Isaiah Part 1- Crisis and FaithResurrection Church
Isaiah was one of the greatest prophets of the Bible. Part One looks at the prophetic process, how do prophets communicate God's messages. During Isaiah's life time Judah faced military and moral crises in which they had to choose between obedience to God's word proclaimed by Isaiah or reliance on strategic alliances.
This week we looked at several verses that were associated with the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. In this weeks teaching I compressed them all into one single powerpoint for your convenience. Over the next few weeks I will be taking you through Genesis Chapter One and the Creation Week. So fasten your seat belts cause on Monday we are starting right at the beginning with Genesis 1:1.
Rom 8:5-8 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

The Framework of a Backslider
1.
2.
3. 20 And when people escape from the wickedness of
the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus
Christ and then get tangled up and enslaved by sin
again, they are worse off than before. 21 It would
be better if they had never known the way to
righteousness than to know it and then reject the
command they were given to live a holy
life. 22 They prove the truth of this proverb: “A dog
returns to its vomit.”And another says, “A washed
pig returns to the mud.”
2 Peter 2:20-22
New Living Translation (NLT)
6. 27 Then Jesus said to them, “All of you will be made to stumble
because of Me this night, for it is written:
‘I will strike the Shepherd,
And the sheep will be scattered.’
28 “But after I have been raised, I will go before you to Galilee.”
29 Peter said to Him, “Even if all are made to stumble, yet
I will not be.”
30 Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you that today, even this
night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three
times.”
31 But he spoke more vehemently, “If I have to die with You, I will
not deny You!”
And they all said likewise.
Mark 14:27-31
7. • In a boastful
manner, Peter
claims he will not
fall away or deny
Christ!
• In doing so, Peter
takes the first step
in backsliding:
"PRIDE"!
Proverbs 16:18
8. • Why is this the "first" step?
a. Because the first step in
entering the kingdom is
HUMILITY [Mt 18:3-4]
b. So if we lose
"humility", we take that first
step backward
• Paul's advice to the
Corinthians is very correct in
this regard. [1Co 10:11]
10. 37 Then He came and found them SLEEPING, and said to
Peter, “Simon, are you sleeping? Could you not watch one
hour? 38 Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The
spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
39 Again He went away and prayed, and spoke the same
words. 40 And when He returned, He found them ASLEEP AGAIN,
for their eyes were heavy; and they did not know what to
answer Him.
41 Then He came the third time and said to them, “Are you still
SLEEPING and RESTING? It is enough! The hour has come;
behold, the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of
sinners. 42 Rise, let us be going. See, My betrayer is at hand.”
Mark 14:37-41
11. • Jesus told Him to keep WATCH
but Peter kept falling ASLEEP.
• It was therefore lack of diligent
preparation which caused him
to be caught off guard for what
was to follow.
12. 3. The same thing can happen to us!
a. Without DILIGENCE, we too can be found
unprepared. [Luke 21:34-36]
b. More often than not, it is a "slow but sure
drifting" that catches us off guard [He 2:1-3]
c. But when we are PROUD of ourselves, we become
LAZY, and that easily leads to the next step...
14. 54 But Peter followed Him AT A DISTANCE, right into
the courtyard of the high priest. And he sat with the
servants and warmed himself at the fire.
Mark 14:54
15. • Note that it says "...Peter
followed Him at a distance“.
• Now that Jesus had become
unpopular...
a. Peter stays FAR ENOUGH
AWAY so as not to be identified
with Him.
b. Peter was unprepared for
the challenge of facing ridicule
and persecution.
16. • Without hardworking preparation, we too can become guilty of
COWARDICE!
a. Ashamed to be seen carrying a Bible.
b. Ashamed to be seen giving thanks.
c. Ashamed to be seen with other Christians.
d. Perhaps even ashamed to let others know that we are Christians!
17. • And yet, Jesus has made it clear what He thinks of
"COWARDICE"
• Mark 8:38 (NKJV)
• For whoever is ASHAMED of Me and My words in this adulterous
and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be
ASHAMED when He comes in the glory of His Father with the
holy angels.”
• Revelation 21:8 (NKJV)
• But the COWARDLY, unbelieving, abominable, murderers,
sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have
their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which
is the second death.”
• When we are ASHAMED of Christ, it is natural for to fall into
the next step of backsliding...
19. 54 But Peter followed Him at a distance, right into the
courtyard of the high priest. And he SAT WITH THE
SERVANTS and WARMED HIMSELF AT THE FIRE.
Mark 14:54
20. • We now find Peter sitting with the servants of the High
Priest and warming himself by the fire.
• ASHAMED to be seen with Christ, it becomes EASY TO
MINGLE with those of the world and enjoy their comforts.
21. • But one cannot be
"COMFORTED BY THE FIRE" of
the WORLD, and not be
"BURNED"!
a. Close contact with that
which can harm has its effects! -
cf. Pr 6:27-29
b. So it is we cannot "FLIRT
WITH THE WORLD" and walk
away untouched! - 1Co 15:33
• By the time we become
"FRIENDS WITH THE WORLD", it
is only a short time before we
take the next and final step of
23. Then he began to curse and swear, “I DO NOT KNOW
this Man of whom you speak!”
Mark 14:71
24. • Away from Christ, at comfort with those in the world, Peter finds
himself DENYING His Lord and Savior!
• In so doing, he has put himself in GRAVE DANGER.
• Matthew 10:32-33(NKJV)
Confess Christ Before Men
“Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before
My Father who is in heaven. 33 But whoever DENIES Me before men, him I will
also DENY before My Father who is in heaven.”
25. • Though we may never actually deny Jesus in "WORDS", we can
easily backslide to the point of denying Him in "ACTION"...
a. We are called to worship Him...
BUT MAKE EXCUSES WHY WE CANNOT!
b. We are called to serve Him...
BUT RENDER LITTLE OR NO SERVICE!
c. We are called to stand by His side and suffer for His name...
BUT STAND AFAR OFF IN THE SAFETY OF THE WORLD'S
COMFORT!
26. When we DENY the Lord, our BACKSLIDING is
complete; unless we REPENT, the only thing left
is to one day FACE THE LORD, where we will
fully realize the ERROR of our ways!!!
27. • For Peter, he fully realized his sin when the LORD TURNED
and LOOKED AT HIM there in the courtyard (cf. Lk 22:60-62).
• Imagine the feeling in Peter's heart as those eyes of His
Savior pierced his soul! Like Judas, Peter WEPT BITTERLY
over his sin.
28. • Unlike Judas, Peter had "GODLY SORROW" that results in
TRUE REPENTANCE (2Co 7:10-11).
• And years later, we find Peter writing the sort of things that
would prevent us from making the same mistake he did...
30. A. TO GUARD AGAINST "PRIDE"...
• Peter enjoins "HUMILITY“ [pagpapakumbaba] - 1Peter 5:5-6
• Indeed, "GOD RESISTS THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE"
• Proverbs 3:34 (NLV)
• 34 God makes fun of those who make fun of the truth but gives loving-favor to
those who have no pride.
31. B. TO WARD AGAINST "LAZINESS"...
• Peter commands "DILIGENCE“ [kasipagan] - 1Pe 5:8-9
• Note especially his words in his second epistle - 2Pe 1:5,10; 3:14
32. C. INSTEAD OF "COWARDICE"...
• Peter charges us to "GLORIFY GOD" - 1Pe 4:16
• Think not of what it means to you, but what it means to God!
33. D. INSTEAD OF "WORLDLINESS"...
• Peter tells us to "ABSTAIN" [iwasan; tigilan]- 1Pe 2:11-12
• Remember that we are “TRAVELERS AND TOURISTS", destined
for a better place than the things of this world have to offer!
34. E. INSTEAD OF "DENIAL"...
• Peter exhorts us to ever be ready to "GIVE A DEFENSE" - 1 Peter 3:15
• By careful preparation, we will "DEFEND" Christ, and NOT "DENY"
Christ!
35. CONCLUSION
• From one who learned by the hard road
of experience, let's TAKE NOTE of his
advice in case we one day BACKSLIDE
ourselves, and in so doing deny the
Lord!
• 2 Peter 3:17-18 (NLV)
• And so, dear friends, now that you
know this, WATCH so you will not be led
away by the mistakes of these sinful
people. Do not be MOVED by them.
• GROW in the loving-favor that Christ
gives you. LEARN to know our Lord
Jesus Christ better. He is the One Who
saves. May He have all the shining-
greatness now and forever. Let it be so.
36. • Remember too that when Peter saw the eyes of his Lord, he
realized the error of his way...
a. Fortunately for him, there was still TIME TO REPENT.
b. But for us, when we see Jesus "FACE TO FACE", the time to
repent will be gone...
IT WILL BE THE TIME FOR JUDGMENT!
37. • If we realize that we are GUILTY OF BACKSLIDING...
a. REPENT now, do not wait until you stand before Jesus
b. Do it now, so that your "FACE TO FACE" encounter with
Jesus will be terrific, not terrifying!
