In the first few days after birth, new parents should spend time bonding with their new baby through skin-to-skin contact. Fathers may feel left out if they have to leave the mother and baby in the hospital, so encouragement and support for the father to get involved is important. New mothers may feel tired, sore from stitches if they had a vaginal birth, and experience changes in hormones that can cause weepiness. Being in the hospital environment after birth provides support from midwives and other new mothers, but some prefer the privacy of home.
