The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) allows eligible employees to take unpaid, job-protected leave for specified family and medical reasons. It was signed into law by President Clinton in 1993 to help employees balance work and family responsibilities. The FMLA provides up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave per year to care for a new child or a family member with a serious health condition. Upon returning, employees must be restored to their original or equivalent position.
