Mission Prep Class: Lesson 5: What is the Role of the Book of Mormon?Jimmy Smith
In this presentation, I am teaching Lesson 5 of the Mission Preparation class from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to my teenage kids. The lesson topic is the role of the Book of Mormon in missionary work. For investigators, an essential part of conversion is receiving a witness from God that the Book of Mormon is true. For missionaries, a personal testimony of the Book of Mormon is also essential to share their message with power. The Book of Mormon is powerful evidence of the divinity of Jesus Christ and provides another testament of his life, mission, and atonement.

It is common to refer to the process of maturing as a disciple as spiritual formation. Here, based upon work by Greg Ogden, I give a four stage process for growing into maturity, and fruitfulness, as a follower of King Jesus.
God’s example of a married couple who had great impact in the first-century Church is Aquila and Priscilla. Two aspects of marriage that helped them have this impact were agreeing together and taking action together.

(Talk I gave at the Brand Summit 2013 in San Francisco)
In today's world of digital infrastructure and empowered customers, becoming a true brand is even more key for sustainable growth and gaining market share as a company. In my past working for multiple clients and industries I have seen many organizations fail by trying to imitate a successful brand and what they thought was their success pattern. Your company is greater than the sum of its products. Don't be just another company - be a brand with purpose and stay relevant. I will talk about my current role at Specialized Bicycles, and our home in the Silicon Valley which means far more than a geo location - it's a spirit and mindset: Founded in 1974 by riders for riders, Specialized is one of the most innovative cycling companies in the world.

Zeus Jones Design Homework - Gordon McIntyre-LeeZeus Jones
The homework assignment is a key element in our hiring process. There's no set rules as to how we define the assignment, but in this case we asked Gordon to get his hands dirty and solve a problem similar to something we often face in our day to day business. There's a passion for cycling in our company and when it came time to select a brand to work on, we thought a cycling brand would be interesting and fun to work on. This is completely spec work as Schwinn is not a client of ours. Needless to say the homework was given an A+ and he's now a big part of our Design Dept.

This hands-on workshop will take you through the unique process that drives design thinking at Zeus Jones. You’ll solve a brief by identifying a strategic design opportunity, developing preliminary design treatments and preparing your pitch for the client. You’ll see how pushing your strategic and creative thinking beyond typical agency expectations can deliver bigger, better results for clients while also boosting your own capabilities across the board.
Zeus Jones believes actions speak louder than words, that modern businesses are defined not by what they say but what they do. Zeus Jones’ mission is to help build modern businesses. The company opened its doors in 2007 in Minneapolis and expanded to include a San Francisco office earlier this year. Clients include General Mills, Nestle Purina, Nike, Nordstrom and Post-It.

" faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." Did you notice that faith involves "evidence" of things "not seen"? The marginal rendering of "substance" is "assurance." Faith involves an assurance "of things hoped for." But, if something is hoped for, that something has not yet been received. Therefore, where faith is involved, there is an assurance that it will be received!

In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

Homily: The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity Sunday 2024.docxJames Knipper
Countless volumes have been written trying to explain the mystery of three persons in one true God, leaving us to resort to metaphors such as the three-leaf clover to try to comprehend the Divinity. Many of us grew up with the quintessential pyramidal Trinity structure of God at the top and Son and Spirit in opposite corners. But what if we looked at this ‘mystery’ from a different perspective? What if we shifted our language of God as a being towards the concept of God as love? What if we focused more on the relationship within the Trinity versus the persons of the Trinity? What if stopped looking at God as a noun…and instead considered God as a verb? Check it out…

What do people look for when shopping
for a summer camp? What do you look
for? Pictures of kids with smiling faces?
Maybe. How about the theme for the
upcoming summer? Perhaps.
More often than not though, you’re
probably looking for the price. “What
is this going to cost?” Once you see the
price, you begin to make an evaluation.
“Is this camp going to be worth it? What
do I get for my money?”
As much as we all appreciate a good
deal, I do not believe that this is the
most accurate way of evaluating summer
camp’s value. The value of a week at a
camp like Mt. Lou San goes far beyond
the dollars and cents. Consider these
aspects which add invaluable worth to a
week of camp.
EXPOSURE TO THE WORD OF GOD
We all understand what happens to
our skin when we are exposed to the
sun. The more time we are out in the
sun, the darker (or redder as the case
may be) the color of our skin becomes.
In a very similar way, extensive
exposure to God’s Word brings about
life change. Campers will benefit from
the chapel messages they hear. But
the hearing of the Word of God is not
limited to chapels. Morning quiet time,
cabin devotions before bed, spiritual
challenges at the low ropes course,
Bible memory work after lunch, and
devotional and godly music options at
the Outpost are just a few of the ways
we try to impress God’s truth on the
hearts of our campers during a week.
Romans 10:17 reminds us that “faith
cometh by hearing, and hearing by the
word of God.” Hebrews 4:12 reminds
us that “the Word of God is quick and
powerful and sharper than a two-edged
sword . . .” The intense exposure to
God’s truth over a week of camp leaves
a lasting impression.
REMOVAL OF DISTRACTIONS AND
WRONG INFLUENCES
Think about two concepts with me:
Busyness and Easy Access. We live in
a culture that is busy by nature. Our
schedules are demanding - filled with
things to do and places to go. We also
live in a culture where things are easily
accessible. While it is a blessing to have
so many things and opportunities at our
disposal, it can be a curse as well. With
so many options available, children and
teens can easily be distracted from living
in obedience to God’s Word.
THE VALUE OF CAMP
(continued next page)
2. A week of camp removes a person from
a regular routine and comfort zone.
It also provides a unique setting for
reflection and discussion of the truths of
God’s Word.
Hebrews 12:1-2 reminds us that we
are to set aside weights that hinder us.
Camp helps us to set aside those weights
for a time to more deeply focus on a
relationship with Jesus.
CONNECTION WITH CONCERNED AND
TRAINED STAFF
Hearing the Word of God is a great
benefit, but observing an example that
is living the Word of God takes it to the
next level. The staff at Mt. Lou San are
far from perfect, but they are committed
to the mission of the camp: “connecting
people to the truths of God’s Word for
the purpose of life change.”
Interaction with young adults who
reinforce the truths of the Bible is
priceless. What a benefit for young
people to hear and see that the Christian
life really works!
The process described by the Apostle
Paul in 2 Timothy 2:2 is what we
are striving for: “and the things that
thou hast heard of me among many
witnesses, the same commit thou to
faithful men, who shall be able to teach
others also.”
As you contemplate the decision to
send your child to camp, I trust these
“hidden” benefits will ring loud and
clear in your mind. As you ask yourself,
“Is camp worth it?”, look beyond the
bank account balance and envision
your child or teen 5 or 10 years down
the road. We look forward to the
opportunity to invest deeply in your
young person!
“Encounter Revival was a tremendous
experience for our daughter! She minis-
tered God’s love by singing and signing
to children as well as adults. Since she
left, the Lord continued to teach her
more about signing at a deaf school in
Puerto Rico for a year and now with that
experience she started a deaf ministry
at her church! We could see how God
used Encounter to start her life towards
ministering to the deaf!”
– Lisa Swink
“We can never overstate the impact of a
year on the ERM team for our daughter.
She grew stronger spiritually, learned to
engage with strangers, developed con-
fidence in public speaking and came to
terms with time management. That year
of 24/7 discipleship strongly helped to
confirm direction for her future ministry.
We only wish every young person could
have this advantage.”
–Richard and Caroline Rodgers
“We are very thankful for how the Lord
has used Encounter Revival Ministries
in the lives of three of our five children.
They have served on the ERM Team for
a total of seven years and have grown
much in their spiritual lives. The Lord
used that time to train and mature them
in preparation for missions work around
the world and in the professional work
place here in the USA.”

3. Do you like change? Most people do
not. Change can be uncomfortable.
Change can be unfamiliar. Change can
be difficult. Change suggests the need
for improvement. You’ve heard the
saying, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
Change means we’re “broke” and we
need some “fixin’.”
The reality is we all need to change.
We are imperfect beings. “For all have
sinned, and come short of the glory of
God.” (Romans 3:23) Yet, we do not
need to be discouraged by this truth! Al-
though every person that walks the face
of the Earth needs to make changes, God
is in the life-changing business!
Consider II Corinthians 3:18. “But we
all, with open face beholding as in a
glass the glory of the Lord, are changed
into the same image from glory to glory,
even as by the Spirit of the Lord. “This
verse should cause you to rejoice. Be-
lievers in Christ are being changed into
His image. This is definitely a change
for the better. You are not just chang-
ing for the sake of changing. Your life
can bear the likeness of the Lord Jesus
Christ.
Change is a process. It is a lot like
growth. We don’t go from 20 inches
long as a baby to six feet tall overnight,
nor do we go from seven pounds to 150
pounds instantly. But with proper diet,
rest, and exercise year after year, our
bodies grow. We mature and develop.
We change.
Spiritual change is also a process. It
doesn’t occur instantly, or painlessly, or
easily. Although time, commitment and
patience are required, the rewards of
spiritual change are beyond imagination.
If you want to change, you have to
change – simple, but profound. We all
want to change in some way. But are we
willing to do what is required to reach
that change?
Some help for making a great spiritual
change can be found in II Peter 1:3-9.
Those who follow this passage, and not
just read it, will experience the change
that God wants us to make. On the other
hand, the person who chooses to ignore
God’s instruction from the passage will
stumble through life, blind and forget-
ting all that is given to us through Christ.
Don’t get spiritually stuck! Make the
change through obedience to God in the
face of pressure to conform to the world.
THE NECESSITY OF BIBLICAL LIFE-CHANGE
READ: II PETER 1:3-9
(3) According as his divine power
hath given unto us all things that
pertain unto life and godliness,
through the knowledge of him that
hath called us to glory and virtue:
(4) Whereby are given unto us
exceeding great and precious
promises: that by these ye might
be partakers of the divine nature,
having escaped the corruption that
is in the world through lust.
(5) And beside this, giving all
diligence, add to your faith virtue;
and to virtue knowledge;
(6) And to knowledge temperance;
and to temperance patience; and to
patience godliness;
(7) And to godliness brotherly
kindness; and to brotherly kind-
ness charity.
(8) For if these things be in you,
and abound, they make you that ye
shall neither be barren nor unfruit-
ful in the knowledge of our Lord
Jesus Christ.
(9) But he that lacketh these things
is blind, and cannot see afar off,
and hath forgotten that he was
purged from his old sins.

LAUNCHING POINT #1
Preparing Our Vehicles and Equipment
Estimated Cost: $10,000
Gas, inspections, and repairs add up
quickly when you’re planning to travel
with a bus, three trucks and three trail-
ers. To get our “convoy” on the road and
out to the churches, the cost far exceeds
the modest travel fee we receive from
our scheduled churches. Additionally,
our sound equipment (sound board, mi-
crophones, mains, monitors, etc.) need
regular repair and upgrading.
LAUNCHING POINT #2

meals a day for over 20 people across 5
weeks quickly becomes expensive. Help
us make training camp a memorable and
unifying experience for the new team by
supporting these expenses.
LAUNCHING POINT #3
International Ministry Administrative
Estimated Cost: $5,000
We make it very clear to the donors for
our international ministries that every
penny of their donation goes directly to
the ministry of their choice. We be-
lieve this is important, but as you can
imagine, Encounter incurs a variety of
service fees and costs to make this hap-
pen. Wire transfers, receipting, mailings,
publications, and much more are needed
to assist our ministries around the world.
As the Encounter team has officially finished their Spring tour and is preparing for 7 weeks of intense summer camp ministry, their
year commitment with Encounter will soon come to an end. This means that a new team will soon arrive in August and we are al-
ready gearing up for the new travel year. In order for us to effectively launch the team into another year of ministry, we have three
specific launching points we must accomplish.
As someone who has demonstrated a passion for what Encounter is doing, let me encourage you to pray and give toward these
launching points. You can be assured that you will be making a difference in the lives of people here and around the world. If you
are interested in contributing to these types of ministry expenses on a monthly basis, become a LIFE-CHANGER at
