THE EDENIC
COVENANT
LEARNING TO PROPHESY
SESSION #2
JANUARY 30, 2019
Goals:
• To understand that God has transferred to man possession
and control of everything that Satan was in charge before.
• It is a slap in Satan's face to know and see that man has
taken his place.
• From before the foundation of the universe, the plan of
salvation for mankind was already sketched.
• By His own initiative God uses covenants to save his people.
• The unfailing faithfulness of God is demonstrated time and
time again through the keeping of His covenants.
SCRIPTURES RELATED:
Genesis 1:28-30
Ezek. 28:11-19
Genesis 2:15-17
Hosea 6:7
1 John 2:16
Genesis 1:28 (NKJV)
• 28Then God blessed them, and God said to
them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth
and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the
sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living
thing that [a]moves on the earth.”
Genesis 1:29-30 (NKJV)
• 29 And God said, “See, I have given you every
herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the
earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to
you it shall be for food. 30 Also, to every beast of
the earth, to every bird of the air, and to
everything that creeps on the earth, in which there
is [b]life, I have given every green herb for food”;
and it was so.
Genesis 2:15-17 (NKJV)
• 15Then the LORD God took [a]the man and put him in
the garden of Eden to [b]tend and keep it. 16 And
the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “Of
every tree of the garden you may freely eat; 17 but
of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you
shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of
it you[c] shall surely die.”
Hosea 6:7 (NKJV)
• 7 “But like [a]men they transgressed the covenant;
There they dealt treacherously with Me.
The participants
of the covenant
Participants:
• The Edenic Covenant was made between God and Adam.
• God. Creator of everything that is and exists.
• Adam. Who stood as the head representative of the
human race.
Consequently, the actions of Adam are
attributed to the whole humanity.
THE PROVISION
OF THE COVENANT
PROVISION #1
Genesis 1:28a
• “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth…
• First: God created the Earth with the purpose that it be the
habitation of man.
• On the sixth day Adam was created and commanded to
populate the Earth.
• Part of the commissioning of Adam was to populate the
earth.
• The earth was to be filled with humanity.
PROVISION #2
Genesis 1:28a
• Man was commanded to subdue the earth. (Dry land)
• Previously, Satan had authority over the earth (Ezek. 28:11-19). But
when he fell, he lost his authority over the earth.
• That is why Genesis 1:2 describes the earth as being covered by water
and darkness being over the face of the deep.
• God re-designed the earth to make it habitable for man,
and this time He gave man the authority over the earth.
• Man was to subdue it; he was to use the natural resources and
energies of the earth that God had provided for him.
PROVISION #3
• Man was given dominion over all living things (Gen.1:28c).
• The earlier provision gave man authority over the earth
(dry land.)
• This provision extended man's authority over all living
creatures.
• The entire animal kingdom on the earth, in the air, and in
the sea. All this was put under the authority of man.
• Adam exercised this authority for the first time, when
giving names to the animals (Gen. 2:19-20).
PROVISION #4
• Man's diet . Gen. 1:29-30; 2:16
• In the beginning, man was to be a vegetarian.
• None of the animal species were provided for his food,
nevertheless, he was to exercise authority over he animal
kingdom.
• No blood of any kind was to be shed.
PROVISION #5
• Directed man to tend and to keep the Garden of Eden (Gen.
2:15).
• Even in his unfallen state, man was not supposed to be idle.
• Work was part of the human ethic even before the Fall.
• However, labor was easy and the land would produce
easily; it was not toilsome.
(Gen. 2:17a). PROVISION #6
• Man was forbidden to eat of the tree of the knowledge of
good and evil.
• He could eat of all the other trees of the garden, except
from eating of that one.
• It was a test of recognition and submission to the will of
God.
• Man was not independent of God and had to follow God's
law.
• Satan before him, rejected God's right to rule and declared
himself independent of God.
PROVISION #7
• The seventh provision
Contained a penalty for disobedience:
• Spiritual death (Gen. 2:17b).
• This cannot refer to physical death because man did not die
on the very day that he disobeyed the commandment.
• Consequently the death spoken here is spiritual death. In
the day that he ate of the tree of the knowledge of good and
evil, he was separated from God and would die spiritually.
THE STATUS
OF THE COVENANT
THE EDENIC COVENANT BROKEN
GENESIS CHAPTER 3 :1-8
• Satan appeared in the Garden of Eden as a fallen creature.
• Man was not created in a perfect universe, sin was already
in existence, it was present in Satan.
• At the beginning sin was not yet existent in man.
• The devil tempted then in three areas as set forth in:
• I John 2:16. NKJV. 16 For all that is in the world—the lust of
the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not
of the Father but is of the world.
