The 1755 Lisbon earthquake and tsunami killed between 15,000 and 20,000 people in Lisbon and an estimated 1,020 lived in the Algarve region of Portugal. The earthquake destroyed 85% of Lisbon's buildings and cost Portugal between 32-48% of its GDP, making it one of the worst natural disasters in western Europe. The earthquake and tsunami devastated the economy, society, and major settlements in the Algarve region. While recovery began in the years following, the Algarve remains at risk from future earthquakes and tsunamis given its location and importance to Portugal's economy and tourism industry today.

Profile: Alex is the CITiZAN Archaeologist for Outreach in Portsmouth, based in the Nautical Archaeology Society offices. She, along with her colleague, works to train new and existing archaeological groups on how to identify, record and monitor archaeology and work to raise awareness of coastal heritage to local communities.
CITiZAN in the Severn
As coastal archaeologists we face processes which are destructive to archaeology but cannot be protected against. The coastal zone does not, and cannot be afforded the protection that terrestrial archaeology, or even maritime archaeology to a certain degree, enjoys. When looking at Historic Environment Records the coast often looks sparse, we have thousands of records which have been identified through development archaeology but coastal development is very limited, for obvious reasons. So how do we work to identify and record an archaeological resource which is unquantified, fragile, constantly eroding and spans thousands of miles? The CITIZAN (Coastal and Intertidal Zone Archaeological Network) project aims to do just this, with its three regional teams covering hundreds of miles each and working in environments from low lying estuaries to granite cliffs.
This presentation will look at the recording of complex archaeological sites in the diverse coastal zone, focusing on the use of new technologies and their accessibility with a focus on our work in the Severn Estuary.

This presentation shows the current status of the "City and Spectacle" project, to be presented at the VSMM 2009 — 15th International Conference on Virtual Systems and Multimedia in Vienna, Austria (http://www.vsmm2009.org/). Changes include the "Patriarcal" church and piazza, new detail on the Opera House façades, a remodelation of Rua da Capela, new Palace Gardens, and a redesign of the Canevari Clock Tower. The video of the 3D models actually comes from OpenSimulator 0.6.6 and is very rude and amateurish. However, the superior capabilities of the modern Second Life viewers show how delightfully realistic the buildings can look like, thanks to the new lighting model that includes shadows.

The earthquake cost Portugal between c.32 and 48% of its Gross Domestic Product, probably making it financially the greatest natural catastrophe to have affected western Europe. Using a combination of archival information and data collected in the field, this article discusses: the devastating effects of the earthquake and tsunami on the economy, society and major settlements in the Algarve; and recovery of the region in the years that followed.
