In the United States, pregnant women have come under a nearly microscopic public ‘lens’ regarding their behavior during pregnancy. Pregnant women are increasingly cast as a form of ‘public property’ with women warned against hundreds of risks, from eating deli meats, Camembert cheese and alfalfa sprouts to the ubiquitous stern warnings about smoking and alcohol use. In its most extreme form, the policing of pregnancy has led to the criminal prosecution of women for in utero ‘child neglect, abuse or endangerment’, delivering drugs to a ‘minor’ or even, as in one case, convicted of homicide for a stillbirth that the court claimed was the result of drug use during pregnancy (with a prison sentence of 12 years).

This paper is based on qualitative interviews with younger and older mothers and examines how they construct and present themselves as good mothers in relation to dominant discourses of good motherhood. Here I will focus on presenting my analysis of how mothers’ moral maternal selves are articulated across interconnected sites of difference such as class, gender, age at first birth and employment. My investigation of the moral work undertaken by mothers looks at their comparisons with other mothers, their experiences of ‘shared’ parenting and of combining mothering with paid work.

Presentation at 2014 FACE conference: Collaborate to Widen Participation: to, through and beyond Higher Education Title: Coffee, Milk and a Sprinkling of Sand: An Initiative to Assist Non-traditional, Mature Students form Supportive Networks in Higher Education Abstract Non-traditional, mature students face a number of complex psychological and structural barriers to higher education and their journeys are often characterised by initial aspirations and later disappointments, when classed, gendered and relational positionings conflict with students’ identities and contribute to their withdrawal from academia. It is not enough to chart these difficulties; rather we need to seek opportunities to create a more inclusive environment so that we do not simply widen access at the point of entry but ensure that mature, non-traditional students complete their undergraduate study. In response to this challenge, the research project explored the student experience by asking non-traditional students to engage with innovative and reflexive process of sandboxing. This approach was developed drawing on the ‘world technique’ in which individuals create three-dimensional scenes, pictures or abstract designs in a tray filled with sand and a range of miniature, realistic and fantasy, figures and everyday objects. This presentation will discuss the usefulness of the sandboxing technique as a tool of qualitative research as well a reflecting on the associated difficulties with the method. There will also be a focus of the themes that arose from the data production process; and these will be explored in relation to the ways in which institutions can work meet the needs of non-traditional students. In particular the paper focuses on a Coffee Club initiative that was set up in response to the feelings of isolation reported by participants in the study; which offered an opportunity to build a supportive peer network. In this way, the research draws on the affective accounts of participants to influence policy and best practice; aiming to improve student experience for marginalised cohorts and to engender retention and success in their transfer to Higher Education.

Qualitative Research: Beyond the Fractured Future Neuchâtel, Switzerland, July 15th-17th 2015 Keynote Abstract Moving beyond the fractured future of ‘the technique’: arguments for slow science, serendipity and creativity in a neoliberal academic market Contemporary social science research is often concerned to engage with and promote particular forms of postmodern and innovative data production, such as photo-elicitation, autoethnography or free association interviews. This fascination with the latest and greatest techniques has been accompanied by an ever more fragmented range of research methods training for students where the week-by-week shift between approaches engenders a disjointed view of becoming the researcher. This individualisation of techniques has set up rival camps and critiques where the common ground of being embedded in traditional ethnography is often forgotten. For researchers, who began their academic careers in the ethnographic tradition, there is an appreciation of the holistic base of enquiry from which a family of methods can be effectively employed. However, more recently qualitative researchers have been distracted by ‘the technique’; a distraction that can blind them to the occupation of ethnography. Concurrently, there have been shifts in the social and economic expectations placed on qualitative inquiry that have acted to close down spaces of ethnographic teaching and practice. In response, this article focuses on the importance of the ‘waiting field’; an opportunity to explore the times where real lives carry on before they make room for the intrusion of the data production of ‘the technique’ and remind us that much qualitative research is, in fact, an ethnographic undertaking: one that encompasses the researcher within and beyond the field.

Running head: SOCIAL WELLBEING IN THE NETHERLANDS 1 SOCIAL WELLBEING IN THE NETHERLANDS 2Social Wellbeing in the Netherlands Introduction Social wellbeing is an end state in which basic human needs are met and people are able to coexist peacefully in communities with opportunities for advancement (USIP, 2013). This is showcased by access to basic needs and services including water, food, shelter and health services (USIP, 2013). The basic needs must be met but belonging is also important. In general, humans are social individuals who want a basic set of standards to create a sense of social wellbeing. There is a strive for connection and this connection including value systems, traditions and even beliefs. When a population is content and feels as though their needs are met they become more sustainable in their social development. Social wellbeing plays a crucial role in sustainability. This paper will analyze the social wellbeing of the Netherlands, identify opportunities for policy enactment, and consider the environmental aspects of social wellbeing and social quality in the country. The Netherlands and Social Wellbeing The Netherlands Institute for Social Research is a government agency which conducts research into the social aspects of all areas of government policy. The Netherlands Institute of Social Research was founded in 1973 after politicians began taking an increased interest in the population and their welfare (Netherlands Institute of Social Research, 2020). The main fields studied are health, welfare, social security, the labor market and education, with a particular focus on the interfaces between these fields (Netherlands Institute of Social Research, 2020). Further, the organization itself was designed to create a picture of the social and cultural wellbeing of the Netherlands. Goals of the organization include the ability to contribute to policy changes and evaluation of how one can achieve a desired solution- for the good of the people (Netherlands Institute of Social Research, 2020). The reports created by this organization are used by the government, academics and civil servants. Advice is provided on legal obligations and civil duties of the government. The goal is doing what is best for the wellbeing of the people. Members of the Netherlands Institute of Social Research are scientists, social geographers, legal specialists, and those who specialize in the economy (Netherlands Institute of Social Research, 2020). Feedback of all kinds is provided by the people of the Netherlands and used in the development of policy and bettering the wellbeing of the population. Books are published yearly that offer the people of the Netherlands, as well as other countries, the opportunity to better understand the social wellbeing of the population. Further, the survey and study results are used to better understand policy, changes, and how to further improve the wellbeing of the peop.

The purpose of this paper is to develop a conceptual understanding of the notion of active citizenship (AC), specifically for the use of this concept in the H2020 project Adult Education as a Means to Active Participatory Citizenship (EduMAP). EduMAP seeks to understand and develop the real and potential impact of adult education on learning for active participatory citizenship in Europe. Particular attention is given to the educational policies and practices used within adult education to foster AC among vulnerable young adults aged 16 to 30. The research question that the project seeks to answer is: What policies and practices are needed in the field of adult education to include young adults at risk of social exclusion in active participatory citizenship in Europe? E-mail: [email protected] Abstract This article explores the conceptual, policy and practical links between poverty and com- munity-oriented social work (COSW). It argues that social workers should be directly involved in the relief of poverty and that the approach most likely to prove successful in this context is one in which practitioners retain close contact with the local commu- nity, working in partnership with a joint focus on prevention and empowerment. Although academic, government and mainstream professional interest in COSW has waned over the past decades in the UK, there are grounds to believe that this may change and that lessons can be learned from COSW in other countries. Keywords: Poverty, Community Social Work Accepted: April 2010 Introduction In 2007/08, the number of people living in poverty in the UK rose, for the third year running, to a total of 13.5 million, while income inequality reached its highest level since 1961 (Brewer et al., 2009). Thus, after ten years of a New Labour government committed to eradicating child poverty and combating financial exclusion (HM Treasury, 1999), inequality and deprivation were at historically high levels, and this before the current recession took hold. We were recently brought sharply to our senses about the seriousness of the situ- ation by a television programme that featured a wealthy entrepreneur # The Author 2010. Retrieval augmented generation (RAG) is the most popular style of large language model application to emerge from 2023. The most basic style of RAG works by vectorizing your data and injecting it into a vector database like Milvus for retrieval to augment the text output generated by an LLM. This is just the beginning. One of the ways that we can extend RAG, and extend AI, is through multilingual use cases. Typical RAG is done in English using embedding models that are trained in English. In this talk, we’ll explore how RAG could work in languages other than English. We’ll explore French, Chinese, and Polish.
