This document describes an old Greek Christmas custom where model boats were displayed in homes and public squares to symbolize man's new course in life after the birth of Christ. The custom honored sailors returning from voyages and was a way for children to sing carols. Though the tradition has declined over time, some Greek municipalities have recently tried to restore the custom of decorating public spaces with Christmas boats instead of trees to celebrate the holidays.
