Objective of Paper: This is a standard research paper based on secondary and primary sources. It should address its topic from a sociological perspective. This means that whatever topic you pick should be discussed using terminology from the readings and class discussions, should be critically examined (meaning its construction, labels, and groups should be discussed and critiqued), and should be placed in a larger context based on what we’ve read and the material we’ve discussed.
Format: The paper must be typed in Times New Roman font, size 12, double-spaced. Points will be deducted for not following these specifications. Do not use color, include images, or provide a cover page. List your name, the course name, and the term at the top of the page, then write your title, then begin the paper. Papers must be at least 6 pages (not including the reference page). Points will be deducted if papers less than 6 and exceed 9 pages.
Citation Style: All citations (to be discussed later in this document) should be in American Sociological Association (ASA) format. See this website: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/583/02/ for information on in-text citations as well as reference page formatting (you’ll have to click on a link to get to the reference page specifications). All citations must appear in the text. You cannot simply list them all at the end of the paper. If you take an idea or a quote from an author, you must cite that author in the text and include her in the reference page as well. Failure to properly cite will result in point deductions.
Layout of Paper: The paper should be divided into FIVE parts:
· Introduction: You will introduce your topic and briefly describe it. You must also tell the reader:
· Why this topic should be interesting to an average reader (e.g., why should I care about the history of the “insanity” please in US courts if I am not a lawyer?)
· Why the topic is sociological
· Literature Review: Since you are probably not the first person to research this topic, you should do some reading of past authors’ works. You should give a summary of their works and explain why it is important to be aware of their works before doing your own research on your topic. You must use a minimum of 4 sources in your literature review. Also, you may only use academic sources or government publications. Acceptable sources are: academic books, journal articles from peer-reviewed journals, and government publications. Unacceptable sources include (but are not limited to): magazines, newspapers, blogs, “.com” websites, online news articles, or non-academic books. There are two major types of literature to look for:

In this essay you should combine your practice responding and analyzing short stories with support derived from research. So far, in the discussion boards, we have practiced primarily formal analysis. Now I want you to practice "joining the conversation." In this essay you will write a literary analysis that incorporates the ideas of others. The trick is to accurately present ideas and interpretations gathered from your research while adding to the conversation by presenting

You will be evaluated, in part, on how well you use external sources. I want to see that you can quote, paraphrase and summarize without plagiarizing. Remember, any unique idea must be credited, even if you put it in your own words.
Choose one of the approaches explained in the "Approaches to Literary Analysis" located at the bottom of this document. Each approach will require research, and that research should provide the context in which you present your own ideas and support your thesis. Be sure to properly document your research. While I am asking you to conduct outside research, do not lose sight of the primary text to which you are responding---the story! Your research should support

About The Semester Project
This course requires a long-term investigative project. This project will require the formation of teams. As a team you will be asked to
defend a claim about a relevant political concept or phenomenon, and to connect
each of the following cultural artifacts to a concept or set of related concepts addressed in this course:

· An event
· A film
· A book or short story
· A painting
· A sculpture
· A musical composition
This project must include an explanatory essay and a presentation, which you will turn in as a team. The explanatory essay must conform either to MLA format or the Chicago Manual of Style, and be of sufficient length to incorporate each of the examples listed above. Depending on the size of your team, the minimum page length shall vary as follows:
· For a single author, the minimum length shall be 12 full pages in standard manuscript form.
The presentation must involve every member of your team, and must be presented in the session during Finals Week.
Unlike other information tasks in this course, the Semester Project is an Open Task rather than a Direct Task (Please see the Big6 Information Literacy presentation for details about the difference). You and your team are asked to construct your topic together. In the past, successful teams have built their project in a variety of ways. Some have connected their project in Government to their own specific fields of study or interest. Literary Critical Theory is a tool that helps you find meaning in stories, poems and
plays. There are many different ways to interpret a novel or short story.
When we read literature, we do so to learn more about:
● The human condition
● The experience of loss and death
● The structure of power in society and how it is implemented (including the issues
that surround race and gender).
● The psychology of characters and individuals in general
● The sociology and history of cultures that produce specific pieces of literature
Literary Theory helps us discover the things listed above in the books and stories we
read. So how do you use theory to read a book? Before exploring, in brief, different
theories, it is important to develop a reading strategy that will help you form ideas.
You should keep a reading notebook and write down ideas and information as you
read. Here is a checklist of things to notice:
● Title. How does it pertain to the story? Does it symbolize events or people in the
story?
● Narration: Who is telling the story? How does the narrator approach the topic?
● Subject: What is the basic situation? What is happening to the characters and how
are they reacting to events?
● Mood: What is the mood of the story, i.e. the emotional background? How is it
expressed in the language and setting?
● Characters: What do the characters learn in the course of the story? What are their
failings and how do they overcome them, or not? What is the main character’s
desire? Is that desire ever fulfilled? How does the main character change?
● Character Interaction: How do the characters interact in the story? How do they

This assignment requires you to
analyze a work of fiction from my list of options (see link on Canvas assignment page). This essay requires you to
develop a focused and opinioned thesis about the story, as this assignment is not asking you to write a mere “book report” which is only a re-telling of the story. It also requires you to
find and use three sources to support your ideas:

I. The Purpose of a Literary Analysis:
A literary analysis is not merely a summary of a literary work. This kind of analysis analysis, like any analysis, is just that:
ANALYTICAL! It is intended to reveal and/or explain meaning. Thus, the assumption is that meaning exists, and it is the job of a (close/active) reader to ferret it out and offer a response to it!
Far from being a mere summary, it is an argument, essentially, about the work that expresses the essay writer’s personal perspective, interpretation, judgment, or critical evaluation. This is accomplished by examining the literary devices, word choices, or writing structures the author uses within the work first, followed by a critical analysis of content. Another purpose of a literary analysis is to demonstrate why the author used specific ideas, word choices, or writing structures to convey his or her message.
II. How to Create a Literary Analysis:
1. Select (and ideally

Literary Critical Theory is a tool that helps you find meaning in stories, poems and
plays. There are many different ways to interpret a novel or short story.
When we read literature, we do so to learn more about:
● The human condition
● The experience of loss and death
● The structure of power in society and how it is implemented (including the issues
that surround race and gender).
● The psychology of characters and individuals in general
● The sociology and history of cultures that produce specific pieces of literature
Literary Theory helps us discover the things listed above in the books and stories we
read. So how do you use theory to read a book? Before exploring, in brief, different
theories, it is important to develop a reading strategy that will help you form ideas.
You should keep a reading notebook and write down ideas and information as you
read. Here is a checklist of things to notice:
● Title. How does it pertain to the story? Does it symbolize events or people in the
story?
● Narration: Who is telling the story? How does the narrator approach the topic?
● Subject: What is the basic situation? What is happening to the characters and how
are they reacting to events?
● Mood: What is the mood of the story, i.e. the emotional background? How is it
expressed in the language and setting?
● Characters: What do the characters learn in the course of the story? What are their
failings and how do they overcome them, or not? What is the main character’s
desire? Is that desire ever fulfilled? How does the main character change?
● Character Interaction: How do the characters interact in the story? How do they

Essay # 2: Literary Analysis of a Short Story with Light Research
This assignment requires you to
analyze a work of fiction from my list of options (see link on Canvas assignment page). This essay requires you to
develop a focused and opinioned thesis about the story, as this assignment is not asking you to write a mere “book report” which is only a re-telling of the story. It also requires you to
find and use three sources to support your ideas:
one source that needs to be from a peer-reviewed, scholarly journal in literature that pertains to the story and/or the author (this source must be obtained through the HCC library databases) AND another source (website preferably) that DOES NOT pertain directly to the story nor to the author, but rather to
the theme presented in your thesis statement and discussed throughout your essay (you cannot pursue this second source until you’ve established your thesis and know what “angle” you are pursuing) AND a third source that is entirely your choice.
I. The Purpose of a Literary Analysis:
A literary analysis is not merely a summary of a literary work. This kind of analysis analysis, like any analysis, is just that:
ANALYTICAL! It is intended to reveal and/or explain meaning. Thus, the assumption is that meaning exists, and it is the job of a (close/active) reader to ferret it out and offer a response to it!
Far from being a mere summary, it is an argument, essentially, about the work that expresses the essay writer’s personal perspective, interpretation, judgment, or critical evaluation. This is accomplished by examining the literary devices, word choices, or writing structures the author uses within the work first, followed by a critical analysis of content. Another purpose of a literary analysis is to demonstrate why the author used specific ideas, word choices, or writing structures to convey his or her message.
II. How to Create a Literary Analysis:
1. Select (and ideally
print) one of the stories listed on my Learning Web page (linked on the Canvas assignment page for this essay assignment). The stories listed here are the only acceptable stories for this assignment, and they are all in full text so there’s no need to find them elsewhere.
2. Read the text closely at least a couple of times. Focus on the ideas that are being presented. Think about the characters’ development and the author’s writing technique. What might be considered interesting, unusual, or important?
3. Brainstorm a list of potential topics. Highlight important passages in the text and take notes on these passages. Think of the ideas/concepts that strike you as you read. Later, when writing the paper, these notes should help a writer to .

Your paper must have an introductory paragraph with a thesis statement that provides a clear, complete, and direct answer to the question: “What role does [concept x] play in the political thought of [thinker y]?” 2. The use of outside sources is not permitted. You may include critiques of these theorists from the syllabus (include Brown, Pateman, and Mills), but there’s no need to look elsewhere. If you’re interested in more general knowledge about any of the thinkers visit their respective pages on The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy. Note: If you’re looking up Mill, make sure you’re looking at the page for John and not his dad, James…it will mess you up. 3.
