Experimental Modes of Civic Engagement in Civic Tech is an investigation into what it means to build civic technology with, not for, real people and real communities. It answers the question, “What’s the difference between sentiment and action?” The project was conducted by Laurenellen McCann, and it deepens her work in needs- responsive, community-driven processes for creating technology for public good. This is a project of the Smart Chicago Collaborative, a civic organization devoted to improving lives in Chicago through technology. It was funded by a Knight Community Information Challenge Deep Dive grant given to The Chicago Community Trust by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

Transgenic crops expressing genes from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) have been successfully used to manage important insect pests. Global adoption of Bt cotton, maize, and other crops has increased rapidly since 1996. While Bt crops targeting Lepidoptera pests predominate, genes like Vip3A show potential for resistance management. Beyond Bt genes, other strategies utilize plant-derived protease inhibitors and amylase inhibitors to damage insect digestion. Transgenic crops expressing these genes have shown effectiveness against pests in field tests.

However, computer science enrollment and teacher certification numbers in Texas are low. 2) The Texas Computer Science Task Force made recommendations to build the computer science pipeline in Texas, including increasing course offerings, teacher training, and student recruitment. 3) Learning computer science empowers students in a digital world dominated by technology they did not create. It allows students to become programmers rather than be programmed by software they do not understand.

Civic Technology Community in Taiwan, which started gathering from the Open source software and Open data usage campaign in 2012 organized the Hackathon activities to expand the population interested in using the Open source and Open data technology, while helping to publicize the information of governmental organizations through online platforms. Civic Technology in Taiwan also plays some roles in political movements and its campaign through online platform. Open source and Open data activities have started to emerge in Thailand as well. However, due to the political situation impeded in Thailand, the technological concepts to create ‘public good’ remain new, which later leads to limited use of Open source and Open data in social movements and connection with the civil society in only certain directly related issues such as environmental or urban development. How the successful factors of Civic Technology community in Taiwan help guide the development of a serious creation of the Civic Technology Community in Thailand as well as building a long-term cooperation between Thai and Taiwan Civic Technology Communities.

Almost from its very beginning, the Web has been ambivalent. It has facilitated freedom for information, but this also included the freedom to spread misinformation. It has faciliated intelligent personalization, but at the cost of intrusion into our private lifes. It has included more people than any other system before, but at the risk of exploiting them. The Web is full of such ambivalences and the usage of artificial intelligences threatens to further amplify these ambivalences. To further the good and to contain the negative consequences, we need a research agenda studying and engineering the Web, as well as numerous activities by societies at large. In this talk, I will present and discuss a joint effort by an interdisciplinary team of Web Scientists to prepare and pursue such an agenda.

What the VUCA? - digital responses to COVID -19 COVID-19 hit; country by country the world ground to a halt. We all became familiar with the headline stats, epidemiology became an interesting new profession. The R-number and contact tracing entered our lexicon as things we all knew about. One good if it’s low, the other something we needed to be able to do. March 21st Singapore released the TraceTogether app a Bluetooth, proximity-based digital contact tracing app. Many other countries had already started on similar journeys to build a system that could use technology to speed up and solve the problem of warning people when they became close contacts. The journey started on our national patron saints day March 17th – after 100 days (100 days in COVID time approximates to 3 years in the old world) an app was born (110 days there was a long labour). This is the story of all the apps born or buried during COVID-19 crisis to-date. It’s a story of rapid decision making, global collaboration, intense external scrutiny and hopefully redemption.

By analysing two case studies, the talk unveils the design approach of Sheldon.studio to turn open data into a digital commons, supporting a better-informed debate, a more vital civic consciousness, and fostering stronger participation in the democratic processes. BIO: Matteo Moretti is an award-winning designer. He is co-founder of Sheldon.studio, the first studio on information-experience-design, and vice-director of the Iiteraction & Experience master at the University of the San Marino Republic. His projects, presented in many academic conferences and events, received the Data Journalism Award 2015, the European Design Award 2016, and 2017. Moretti has also been a jury member at the World Press Photo 2017-18 and one of the 100 ambassadors of Italian design in the world 2018.
