This document discusses the parallels between leadership and music. It argues that leadership, like music, is an art that inspires and mentors others. Both musicians and leaders must innovate, adapt to new technologies, and utilize available resources efficiently while dealing with constant change. The document also examines how musicians and leaders must evaluate their own performance and get feedback in order to improve. It explores how leadership programs that use music as a metaphor can provide insights into developing strengths and performing under pressure.
The document discusses the role of a manager or Chief Technology Officer (CTO) as a conductor of a team. It states that like a conductor, a manager must be sensitive to rhythm and tempo in order to lead a team in harmony. A manager must understand the environment, goals, and people involved to define the best strategy or "score" for the team to follow. During execution of projects or strategies, the manager uses tools like agile methods, objectives and key results, and communication to keep the team unified and working towards shared goals. Overall, the document argues that effective management requires setting the right rhythm and pace for a team through clear direction, communication, and coordination, similar to the role of a conductor of an orchestra
The document discusses the role of a manager or Chief Technology Officer (CTO) as akin to a conductor of an orchestra. It discusses three main points:
1) For a manager, maintaining rhythm is essential for harmony and success, just as it is for a conductor. The manager must be sensitive to the internal and external rhythms impacting the team/organization.
2) When executing projects or strategies, the manager must understand the "score" or plan, ensure all stakeholders understand their roles, and communicate the intensity and dynamics of different phases, just as a conductor does.
3) Leading requires total commitment from the manager, using both managerial and artistic gestures to strengthen their position and motivate the

Dawann Jones has created a career strategy map to help achieve his goal of becoming a music business executive. His plan is to start as an artist & repertoire intern at a major record label, then gain experience as a touring and event coordinator, music producer, and eventually a music executive. At each step he outlines the key responsibilities and qualifications needed to take his independent record label to a professional level.
The A&R coordinator is the first point of contact between artists and the record label. They are responsible for scouting and recommending new talent to sign. Once an artist is signed, the A&R coordinator helps find a producer, books studio time, and advises the artist on the recording process. They work with artists to select the best songs to record and find songwriters for artists who don't write their own music.
The head of artist promotions promotes signed artists through activities like social media, advertisements, arranging interviews, and getting radio stations to play the artist's music. They manage publicity, promotions, and advertising for artists. This position requires skills in organization, persuasion, and creativity to promote artists through
Recording a demo is an important step in the music production process that allows artists to capture ideas, work out transitions between sections, and audition different elements without needing to perfect them. There are a few main approaches to recording a demo: collaborating with other musicians, doing it yourself using technology, or getting help from a producer. Getting input from others can help identify problem areas, but the artist must be open-minded and not too attached to their own ideas. A producer can provide a fresh perspective and honest feedback to help strengthen the song. The demo is useful for generating ideas and determining what works before final production.
Zachary Prados is a DJ and music business major who wants to pursue a career in marketing, management, or public relations for record labels and artists. The document discusses the skills, qualities, attributes, and responsibilities needed to be a successful musical theatre performer. It outlines that performers need skills in singing, acting, and dancing (the "triple threat"). Flexibility, networking skills, enthusiasm, and physical/vocal stamina are important qualities. Key attributes include talent, determination, humility, and the ability to work well with others. The roles of lead performer, swing, ensemble member, standby, and understudy are explained. Auditions are identified as the best application method as they allow performers to showcase their talents and personality.
This document discusses how collaborations between businesses and artists can spur innovation. It provides several examples of partnerships, including a product launch room designed by artists at DSM to inspire creativity, and a project pairing engineers with artists at an engineering consultancy. Quotes from business partners highlight how working with artists influenced their thinking and ability to consider new perspectives. Artists' quotes also discuss learning from the partnerships and focusing on the organizations' needs. The conclusion suggests that beauty and art can provide a form of energy and way to explore unknowns, and asks how business and art can best be organized to work together.
The document discusses how talent management is typically viewed from an organizational perspective rather than focusing on individuals. It notes that in music, talent management prioritizes developing individual musicians' technical skills, musicality, and stage presence over organizational needs. Similarly, business talent management should focus on cultivating managers' technical business skills, ability to apply skills contextually, and leadership/communication presence rather than integrating them strictly into existing organizational structures. Viewing talent as the priority over the organization allows both individuals and companies to better thrive.

1. The CEO-CFO Jugalbandi
The CEO and CFO jugalbandi is all about striking the right
‘notes’ together, similar to how two artistes who are
proficient with their respective instruments but when
played together create ‘magic’. Just like good artistes who
may understand and in some
cases play the other artiste’s
instrument well, they recognize
the impact of putting together
a great performance by giving
each other the space and freedom to express themselves
so that each of them look good individually and also come
out delivering an incredible performance together!
Why do Jugalbandi’s go wrong? The accompanying
artistes may not be that good, they are playing not so
good accompaniments / instruments, they may not be as
2. trained, the sound system are not good, under too much
pressure, not paid adequately, overworked, nervous or
just believes that he / she should be the one in the
limelight. Does this sound familiar? For every perfect
jugalbandi, it is important to have good quality
accompaniments and also people capable of playing
these. The main artistes can cover up for the
accompanying artistes through their sheer brilliance for
some parts of the concert or even for a few concerts (if
they are lucky and not found out) but this cannot continue
beyond a point. For a good quality concert, all players
need to come together and provide the main artistes the
support to make the concert successful. This is true even
in the case of business where the success or failure of the
individuals/CXO is directly attributable to the talent pool,
the organization culture, leadership and the resources that
one directly controls amongst others.
3. The CEO, CFO synchrony is best left to these individuals
to determine as how two good artistes would plan before a
jugalbandi. Great partnerships do not happen overnight,
they happen through constant communication, being able
to understand each other better, discovering what each
one can do, stepping aside and letting the other person
take the lead and working towards a common goal – which
is to deliver a great performance.
