This issue of Viewfinder is
committed to the FIP Landscape
workshop at 'The Buransh Retreat',
Kausani. It was a very successful WS
with lot of learning, occurrence,
happening and fun. Total 42
participants across the country,
excluding three faculty members
attended this WS, although the number
of participants was little on the shorter
side of what was expected, reason may
be children's exams or modest gap
between two FIP workshops, but it
proved blessing in disguise, as with
lesser number of participants it was
easy to interact and interrelate.
In a way this workshop was little different - participants were told what would be
possibilities here for making good landscape studies or for that matter anything else,
which were there in abundance, like rural life, candid, patterns and what not. All three
faculty members shown their work related to landscape photography and shared their
experience with the participants. On actual locations they were set a free to explore the
place and opportunities in their own personal way and result was very encouraging.
Some of the pictures are being used in this issue and I hope you will agree with me by
seeing these images, that it was a very productive workshop conducted by FIP. Another
important aspect of this workshop – 15 prints each of the three faculty members and 15
prints of renowned landscape photographer Late Kr. Shukdeo Singh were on display,
which was great axis of attraction and learning for participants.
During the workshop we experienced and enjoyed cultural programmes of this region –
folk songs and dances etc., it was not only great pleasure to watch local artists
performing but also it was a great deal of learning about new culture, and to prove my
point I am using a visual of it here with the editorial.
I would like to say something about this place 'The Buransh Retreat' - where we had this
workshop, this place is not just another location to stay in Kausani, it is much more than
that - The 'Buransh Retreat' surrounded by Buransh (Rhododendron) and pine forest
on one side and the tea garden on the other, truthfully having magical surroundings,
the open spaces, the epic views of the Himalayas, walls of this place flaunt so much
beauty on them, one won't miss the pretty photographs show casing some of the most
breath taking views around. All rooms are ultra-spacious, with full glass window, so
that one can see and enjoy view of the 'Himalaya' all the time. Elegant, exclusive and
luxurious rooms pamper guests with finest amenities and gorgeous food court and
above all the epic view of 'Himalaya' make 'The Buransh Retreat' an experience to make
it a home away from home. One cannot even resist spending hours sitting next to large
full glass window with a cup of coffee or a book. 'The Buransh Retreat' is not just another
place to hang around while in Kausani, it is like a dream comes true for the man behind
it – Threesh Kapoor.
I would like to thank not only Threesh for taking special and personal care of the
participants but also his wife Anita and daughter Prasanna – I am grateful to all of them.
We are planning to have our next Landscape workshop at the same place, perhaps in
coming November, let's hope for that best with crossed fingers.

Mostlandscapephotographsaretakenbecauseaphotographersuddenlychancesuponawonderful
scene and feels inspired to record it on film. The purpose of the landscape picture is to create an
emotional response in those who look at the picture that is similar to that experienced by the
photographer. But all too often we, as photographers, fail to evoke the desired emotional response
because we do not take the time to plan and create our landscapes as we do our other photographic
subjects.
The focus of a landscape is on scenery: mountains, fields, lakes, rivers, waterfalls, churches and
farms. But there is more to landscape photography than this. A landscape is also a combination of

Lightingisanimportantelementinagoodlandscapebecauseitprovidesthedramaticeffectneeded
to create impact and visual interest. There is no need to accept the first lighting situation you
encounter. It's often best to study the scene under different lighting conditions; then, create the
photographwhenthelightingismostadvantageous.Thismay,however,requirethatyouplantrips

The season, the time of day and the weather are the factors that influence landscape lighting. As a
rule, the best time to shoot is when the sun is at an angle to the vertical, usually before 9 A.M. and
after 5 P.M. At these times, the sunlight brings out the forms and texture in a scene and produces
long shadows, imparting a dramatic effect. You should avoid midday, when the sun is directly
overhead; instead of producing long shadows, the midday sun creates heavy black spots at the base
of the elements in the landscape. A similar effect results when the scene is backlit; the shadows in
thelandscapewillthenloomheavilytowardsthecamera.
Landscapes, perhaps more than any other subject, suffer from a lack of depth, yet our senses
demand this feeling of depth more in landscape photograph, than in other two-dimensional media.
Byusingsidelighting,though,youcangiveroundnesstothelandscapeelementsandthuscreatean
illusion of a third dimension. You can also impart a feeling of depth by composing landscapes that
include three planes; a foreground, a middle distance and a background. By being aware of how
various elements cut across and block one another, you can emphasize the spatial relationships in a
photograph. Haze emphasizes the spatial relationships in a photograph. Haze in the distance can
alsocontributetoafeelingofdepth-it'snotnecessarilytheevilweoftenmakeitouttobe.
Laboratory studies have shown that our eyes tend to seek a pointer, and once we find it, we'll follow
wherever it leads. Nature provides the landscape photographer with many pointers that can be
used as leading lines. Streams, rivers, cloud formations and shadows occur naturally, while man
has added roads, trails and fence rows. You can often create pointers by, for example, arranging a

Tips toward successful Landscape Photography
Eddie A. Mclnnes

Landscapes often contain human figures that are placed in such a way that the viewer doesn't know
if the landscape, the figures or both were the photographers' primary interest. In a landscape
photograph, human figures should not dominate the picture. If they appear at all, they should fit
naturally into the scene and appear only as secondary elements. Generally, if you can read the
expression on the face of a person in the picture, the person can become the centre of interest, and
whenthishappens,theviewerwillhavedifficultyconcentrating upontheactuallandscape.Sinceit
would look odd to photograph a village or farm without showing the type of people who live and
work there, your landscapes will sometimes contain people. But, you must decide whether the
peopleorthelandscapeistobeyourmaintheme.
In landscapes, as in all other types of photography, there should be one centre of interest and one
reasonforrecordingthescene.Youshouldselectandconcentrateonasmallarearatherthantrying
to encompass the entire scene. The other elements of the photograph will then support and
enhance the centre of interest. In a landscape, the centre of interest is usually placed in the middle

Whenviewingascene,eventhroughtheviewfinder,wetendtoconcentrateonthecentreofinterest
and neglect the other landscape elements. Later, upon viewing the photograph, we then notice the
cluttered foreground, specular reflections and other distractions. You should take time before
tripping the shutter to examine the scene through the viewfinder for distracting elements,
including highlights, dark areas and tilted horizon lines. You should also check the edges of the
viewfinderformergers,unwantedintrusionsandotherdistractions.
FRAMEIT
Let me conclude with a few practical techniques which have served me well over the years. I try to
achieve the maximum depth of field in a landscape by using the hyperfocal focusing distance with
the smallest aperture available. This allows greater latitude in selecting foreground and framing
material. For example, my favourite landscape lens is a 28mm, since it gives me a depth of field
from21/2feettoinfinity.
I shoot all of my landscapes using a polarizing filter to darken the sky and to increase colour
saturation (through the elimination of specular highlights). Over polarizing landscapes, however,
reduces the effectiveness of the image and should be avoided. Whenever I am over 4,000 feet in
elevation, I add an 81A filter to my lens to reduce the excessive skylight encountered at higher
altitudes.
Because I use small apertures, slow film and filtration, I find that I'm often using exposures of 1/8
second or slower. I therefore have to use two other pieces of equipment essential to the landscape
photographer — a tripod and a cable release. By using a sturdy tripod and a cable release, I've been
able to make razor-sharp 16 x20 enlargements from 35mm Kodachrome 25 slides taken with a 1/8
secondexposure.
Since extraneous light can produce uncontrolled reflections that impair brilliance and contrast,
particularly with back lighted subjects, a lens shade is also a must. This is so even when there are no
visible reflections. The lens shade I use is designed for a wide-angle lens and can be adapted for
otherlenseswithstep-downrings.Itslargesizepreventsvignettingduetothefilters.
I always try to move around, looking for different framings, leading lines, planes and overlapping
elements. I try different lenses to obtain different perspectives. Finally, I look for the small
elements.Youcanoftenfindinterestingpicturesjustbylookingdown.
Anyone can begin to master this fascinating branch of photography. The key to success is to
patiently chart your own course by developing new techniques and by sometimes ignoring the
rules, even though 99 times out of 100 this will lead to poor results. It's that 100th shot that's so
important the picture so full of eloquence and feeling that it speaks for you and conveys your
feelingstoothers.

Landscapes are the pictures photographers love to hate. We disdain them as
clichés, but take them by the boxful. We superimpose rule-of-thirds grids on
everybody else's pictures, but then put everything where we darn well please in our
own scenic shots. We carry 40 pounds of photo gear up a mountain and take two
pictures, then shoot 20 rolls with a point-and-shoot during a bus trip.
Just what is it about landscapes that get us so bent out of shape?
Quite possibly, it's that we underestimate them so.
Consider: Landscapes are passive subjects, right? So they should be easy. You don't
have to get a tree to sign a model release; the rock formations don't have to be
cajoled into standing still; no photographer was ever punched in the nose by a field
of poppies.
In other words, scenery is a lot less trouble than people.
But is it? Think of the resistance you can face in taking a "simple" landscape: You're
at the mercy of the weather (and good weather can be even more of a problem than
bad), geography (gee, does the sun have to set over there?), biology (plant life may
not be at its peak), topography (the best vantage point really is a two-hour hike up
that ridge) ....And all those tips and tricks you've mastered for making portrait
subjects look thinner, or younger, or smoother, just won't work on Mother Nature.
Sure, you can put up a scrim or reflector to get better light on a flower but you can't
add fill flash to a dark mountainside.
In fact, scenery isn't the least bit passive; it's the photographer who ends up being at
the utter whim of some very, very big and mighty forces. Is it any wonder that too
many photographers settle for the standard record shots rather than creating true
landscapes?
It doesn't have to be that way.
We've assembled here a pretty diverse portfolio of some of the very best landscape
photographers working today. The work ranges from quite commercial to
distinctly personal; but every one of these photographers shares a fundamental
characteristic; they overcome natural obstacles by defying the inherent passivity of
landscape shooting. In simple words, they work at it. Here are some specifics you
can see in their pictures:
Patience is the primary virtue: No impatient man or woman ever became a good
scenic photographer. The right light can't ever be held to an appointment.
By patience, we don't just mean waiting for the right break in the clouds, or for the
wind to let up. It means returning to a scene that you believe in later in the day, or
during a different season, or many times over the course of a decade.
Try all the angles. You're looking through your viewfinder and saying, wow, what a
great shot; this one will really be a keeper. Now consider further: You're looking
through exactly one angle out of a 360 degree circle. How do you know there isn't
an even better shot somewhere around that circle?
Be ready: If you know that dawn will break over the mountains in a glorious burst
of colour at 5:45 A.M., you can't get there at 5:45. Better make it 4:45. Have
everything set up, bring backups, carry a flashlight, wear a watch.
Know your equipment: Things can happen fast in natural light. There's just no
excuse for missing a shot because you were fumbling with the exposure
MASTER LANDSCAPES
Dan Richards
10 VIEWFINDER APRIL, 2015
compensation dial or mistook an AF switch for exposure lock. Learn your rig, inside
and out.
Shoot lots of film: And sometimes a minor shift in angle makes a better shot. If
you're shooting reasonable variations, none of this film can be considered "wasted"
Learn to love bad weather: Everything from light mist to dark clouds and storms.
Pre-visualize a specific look: It takes patience, vision, fortitude, and a half ton of
luck, but if you really want to achieve a certain scene quality, you can often do it.
Don't be afraid of a little enhancement: True, you can't use fill flash on the
mountainside, but you can add flash to a foreground detail. Warming filters such as
the 81A can take the blues out of colour photos, and polarisers can work subtle
wonders.
Get in shape: Landscape photography is not for chronic couch potatoes. If you're
thinking in circles, it means you're going to be walking in circles sometimes very big
circles. Good hiking shoes are as important a piece of equipment as a camera and
tripod. And for God's sake, get out of the car. Good landscapes aren't taken from the
scenic overlook. For starters, the places next to the highway are usually blanketed
by smog.
Learn composition by doing: We can assure you that not one of the photographers
here walks around mentally superimposing a rule-of-thirds grid on everything.
Yes, all are well versed in the principles of classical composition-and they know
precisely when to break them.
Good compositions are always found by looking and seeing, and wonder and play,
not by draping the landscape in some rigid orthodoxy.

DearSir
I have recently attended FIP landscape workshop at Kausani, Utterakhand, the workshop was well
organized. There were slide shows of landscapes of Himalayas by faculty members, which were very
inspiring, awesome and amazing and which I would have missed if I were not there. The location
selected was so superb that we could click the images of the mountains and valley with changing

MumbaiVakharkarSatishMadhukar,
Sir,
It was a lovely experience at the 'FIP Landscape Workshop' at Kausani. Everything was marvellous - our
stay, food, place, environment and above all our faculty members – Anilji, Anupji and Threeshji. I had
the opportunity to learn from their experiences as well as I got lots of tips. Their exhibition touched my
heart, which enriched me a lot. Apart from the landscape we were offered with plenty of scopes in
rural/village photography as well. The workshop ended with hearty memories. I wish FIP will organise
manymoresuchworkshopsinthenearfuture. ,DurgapurNupurKumarRoy
DearSir,
It is a great pleasure to inform that I am one of the life member of FIP from last 20 years or so. I think
duringlastcoupleofyearstheworkshopsarebeingorganisedFIPreallypraiseworthy.
Apart from Jaisalmare, Agra & Bharatpur held in previous years, this year's Manglajodi and Kausani
workshops were extra-ordinary according to me. Manglajodi WS is unforgettable, I shall keep it in
mindforwholelife,travellingonboatandtakingbirds'photographs.
Lastly I should mention about Kausani WS, Kausani is called Switzerland of India, doing photography
here is unparallel and unprecedented. The accommodation of 'Buransh' was so excellent , I did not
expect such a luxurious and comfortable stay. I also learned intricacies of landscape photography from
learnedfacultymembers.SuchtypeofWSshouldbeorganisedbyFIPinregularintervals.
Lastly I would like to express our sincere thanks to you and Dr.B.K.Sinha for leading FIP with such
dynamicmanner.Regards. KolkataHirakSengupta,

Editor,
I got the issue. It was very informative both on the technical details about photography
and otherwise too like when the next workshop will be held, the winners of the photo
contest, amazing shots on birds and more. Kudos! Looking forward to such workshops
in our place too (the hot Chennai), if possible or at least somewhere in Tamil Nadu.
Sudha T.R., Chinai
Dear Anil Risal Singh ji,
Hearty congratulation and a big thank to you and to the Editorial Board for bringing out
the Viewfinders so beautiful, informative and useful month after month.
In March issue of viewfinder, I found the article "BACK BUTTON FOCUSING" written
by Dr B. K. Sinha, MFIAP, Hon FIP, ARPS, Hon. FSoF immensely useful. I tried this
technique previously a few times but could not understand it fully. Doc has explained it
very clearly and in full detail. I even called Dr Sinha for further query on this. We had a
discussion for about 20 minutes where he further clarified that if we use Back Button
Focusing, we can set camera on AF-C all the times. We need not to select AF-S. He said
that using AF-C focusing mode is useful for both stationary and moving subjects while
using the BACK BUTTON FOCUSING.
D.P.Bhatia, Chandigarh
Dear Anil Ji,
I read the March issue of Viewfinder. As usual, I liked it and the pictures are especially
excellent and the editorial part is very good too. I am sending you some pictures clicked
by me at Kausani for Viewfinder. Regards,

  • 5. 3VIEWFINDER APRIL, 2015 Editorial Anil Risal Singh This issue of Viewfinder is committed to the FIP Landscape workshop at 'The Buransh Retreat', Kausani. It was a very successful WS with lot of learning, occurrence, happening and fun. Total 42 participants across the country, excluding three faculty members attended this WS, although the number of participants was little on the shorter side of what was expected, reason may be children's exams or modest gap between two FIP workshops, but it proved blessing in disguise, as with lesser number of participants it was easy to interact and interrelate. In a way this workshop was little different - participants were told what would be possibilities here for making good landscape studies or for that matter anything else, which were there in abundance, like rural life, candid, patterns and what not. All three faculty members shown their work related to landscape photography and shared their experience with the participants. On actual locations they were set a free to explore the place and opportunities in their own personal way and result was very encouraging. Some of the pictures are being used in this issue and I hope you will agree with me by seeing these images, that it was a very productive workshop conducted by FIP. Another important aspect of this workshop – 15 prints each of the three faculty members and 15 prints of renowned landscape photographer Late Kr. Shukdeo Singh were on display, which was great axis of attraction and learning for participants. During the workshop we experienced and enjoyed cultural programmes of this region – folk songs and dances etc., it was not only great pleasure to watch local artists performing but also it was a great deal of learning about new culture, and to prove my point I am using a visual of it here with the editorial. I would like to say something about this place 'The Buransh Retreat' - where we had this workshop, this place is not just another location to stay in Kausani, it is much more than that - The 'Buransh Retreat' surrounded by Buransh (Rhododendron) and pine forest on one side and the tea garden on the other, truthfully having magical surroundings, the open spaces, the epic views of the Himalayas, walls of this place flaunt so much beauty on them, one won't miss the pretty photographs show casing some of the most breath taking views around. All rooms are ultra-spacious, with full glass window, so that one can see and enjoy view of the 'Himalaya' all the time. Elegant, exclusive and luxurious rooms pamper guests with finest amenities and gorgeous food court and above all the epic view of 'Himalaya' make 'The Buransh Retreat' an experience to make it a home away from home. One cannot even resist spending hours sitting next to large full glass window with a cup of coffee or a book. 'The Buransh Retreat' is not just another place to hang around while in Kausani, it is like a dream comes true for the man behind it – Threesh Kapoor. I would like to thank not only Threesh for taking special and personal care of the participants but also his wife Anita and daughter Prasanna – I am grateful to all of them. We are planning to have our next Landscape workshop at the same place, perhaps in coming November, let's hope for that best with crossed fingers.

The purpose of the landscape picture is to create an emotional response in those who look at the picture that is similar to that experienced by the photographer. But all too often we, as photographers, fail to evoke the desired emotional response because we do not take the time to plan and create our landscapes as we do our other photographic subjects. The focus of a landscape is on scenery: mountains, fields, lakes, rivers, waterfalls, churches and farms. But there is more to landscape photography than this. A landscape is also a combination of land, sky, weatherandlight.Sunshineandstorm, lightandshadowandthechangingoftheseasons areconstantsourcesofinspirationtotheseriouslandscapephotographer, whoseessomethingnew ineveryscene. Lightingisanimportantelementinagoodlandscapebecauseitprovidesthedramaticeffectneeded to create impact and visual interest. There is no need to accept the first lighting situation you encounter. It's often best to study the scene under different lighting conditions; then, create the photographwhenthelightingismostadvantageous.Thismay, however, requirethatyouplantrips inadvanceorevenmakereturntrips. The season, the time of day and the weather are the factors that influence landscape lighting. As a rule, the best time to shoot is when the sun is at an angle to the vertical, usually before 9 A.M. and after 5 P.M. At these times, the sunlight brings out the forms and texture in a scene and produces long shadows, imparting a dramatic effect. You should avoid midday, when the sun is directly overhead; instead of producing long shadows, the midday sun creates heavy black spots at the base of the elements in the landscape. A similar effect results when the scene is backlit; the shadows in thelandscapewillthenloomheavilytowardsthecamera. Landscapes, perhaps more than any other subject, suffer from a lack of depth, yet our senses demand this feeling of depth more in landscape photograph, than in other two-dimensional media. Byusingsidelighting, though, youcangiveroundnesstothelandscapeelementsandthuscreatean illusion of a third dimension. You can also impart a feeling of depth by composing landscapes that include three planes; a foreground, a middle distance and a background. By being aware of how various elements cut across and block one another, you can emphasize the spatial relationships in a photograph. Haze emphasizes the spatial relationships in a photograph. Haze in the distance can alsocontributetoafeelingofdepth-it'snotnecessarilytheevilweoftenmakeitouttobe. Laboratory studies have shown that our eyes tend to seek a pointer, and once we find it, we'll follow wherever it leads. Nature provides the landscape photographer with many pointers that can be used as leading lines. Streams, rivers, cloud formations and shadows occur naturally, while man has added roads, trails and fence rows. You can often create pointers by, for example, arranging a weatheredpieceofdeadwood.Youcanalsouseimpliedleadinglines, suchasanarrowvalleyoran opening between trees or bushes. But you should be careful that your pointer doesn't take the eye pastthecentreofinterestorevenoutofthepicture. APERSONALSTYLE To keep interest where you want it in a landscape picture, you should break up leading lines or use anotherelementtohidethem.Oneofthemosteffectivewaystodothisistoframethepictureeither partially or completely, with darker foreground material. Framing should not dominate the picture or detract from the centre of interest, but rather add impact, depth and perspective. A gateway and rocks are examples of natural frames. • 9. 7VIEWFINDER APRIL, 2015 Landscapes often contain human figures that are placed in such a way that the viewer doesn't know if the landscape, the figures or both were the photographers' primary interest. In a landscape photograph, human figures should not dominate the picture. If they appear at all, they should fit naturally into the scene and appear only as secondary elements. Generally, if you can read the expression on the face of a person in the picture, the person can become the centre of interest, and whenthishappens, theviewerwillhavedifficultyconcentrating upontheactuallandscape.Sinceit would look odd to photograph a village or farm without showing the type of people who live and work there, your landscapes will sometimes contain people. But, you must decide whether the peopleorthelandscapeistobeyourmaintheme. In landscapes, as in all other types of photography, there should be one centre of interest and one reasonforrecordingthescene.Youshouldselectandconcentrateonasmallarearatherthantrying to encompass the entire scene. The other elements of the photograph will then support and enhance the centre of interest. In a landscape, the centre of interest is usually placed in the middle distancebutmayfallanywherewithinthepicture. Later, upon viewing the photograph, we then notice the cluttered foreground, specular reflections and other distractions. You should take time before tripping the shutter to examine the scene through the viewfinder for distracting elements, including highlights, dark areas and tilted horizon lines. You should also check the edges of the viewfinderformergers, unwantedintrusionsandotherdistractions. FRAMEIT Let me conclude with a few practical techniques which have served me well over the years. I try to achieve the maximum depth of field in a landscape by using the hyperfocal focusing distance with the smallest aperture available. This allows greater latitude in selecting foreground and framing material. For example, my favourite landscape lens is a 28mm, since it gives me a depth of field from21/2feettoinfinity. I shoot all of my landscapes using a polarizing filter to darken the sky and to increase colour saturation (through the elimination of specular highlights). Over polarizing landscapes, however, reduces the effectiveness of the image and should be avoided. Whenever I am over 4,000 feet in elevation, I add an 81A filter to my lens to reduce the excessive skylight encountered at higher altitudes. Because I use small apertures, slow film and filtration, I find that I'm often using exposures of 1/8 second or slower. I therefore have to use two other pieces of equipment essential to the landscape photographer — a tripod and a cable release. By using a sturdy tripod and a cable release, I've been able to make razor-sharp 16 x20 enlargements from 35mm Kodachrome 25 slides taken with a 1/8 secondexposure. Since extraneous light can produce uncontrolled reflections that impair brilliance and contrast, particularly with back lighted subjects, a lens shade is also a must. This is so even when there are no visible reflections. The lens shade I use is designed for a wide-angle lens and can be adapted for otherlenseswithstep-downrings.Itslargesizepreventsvignettingduetothefilters. I always try to move around, looking for different framings, leading lines, planes and overlapping elements. I try different lenses to obtain different perspectives. Finally, I look for the small elements.Youcanoftenfindinterestingpicturesjustbylookingdown. Anyone can begin to master this fascinating branch of photography. The key to success is to patiently chart your own course by developing new techniques and by sometimes ignoring the rules, even though 99 times out of 100 this will lead to poor results. It's that 100th shot that's so important the picture so full of eloquence and feeling that it speaks for you and conveys your feelingstoothers. (Courtesy: PSA Journal)

  • 15. 9VIEWFINDER APRIL, 2015 Landscapes are the pictures photographers love to hate. We disdain them as clichés, but take them by the boxful. We superimpose rule-of-thirds grids on everybody else's pictures, but then put everything where we darn well please in our own scenic shots. We carry 40 pounds of photo gear up a mountain and take two pictures, then shoot 20 rolls with a point-and-shoot during a bus trip. Just what is it about landscapes that get us so bent out of shape? Quite possibly, it's that we underestimate them so. Consider: Landscapes are passive subjects, right? So they should be easy. You don't have to get a tree to sign a model release; the rock formations don't have to be cajoled into standing still; no photographer was ever punched in the nose by a field of poppies. In other words, scenery is a lot less trouble than people. But is it? Think of the resistance you can face in taking a "simple" landscape: You're at the mercy of the weather (and good weather can be even more of a problem than bad), geography (gee, does the sun have to set over there?), biology (plant life may not be at its peak), topography (the best vantage point really is a two-hour hike up that ridge) ....And all those tips and tricks you've mastered for making portrait subjects look thinner, or younger, or smoother, just won't work on Mother Nature. Sure, you can put up a scrim or reflector to get better light on a flower but you can't add fill flash to a dark mountainside. In fact, scenery isn't the least bit passive; it's the photographer who ends up being at the utter whim of some very, very big and mighty forces. Is it any wonder that too many photographers settle for the standard record shots rather than creating true landscapes? It doesn't have to be that way. We've assembled here a pretty diverse portfolio of some of the very best landscape photographers working today. The work ranges from quite commercial to distinctly personal; but every one of these photographers shares a fundamental characteristic; they overcome natural obstacles by defying the inherent passivity of landscape shooting. In simple words, they work at it. Here are some specifics you can see in their pictures: Patience is the primary virtue: No impatient man or woman ever became a good scenic photographer. The right light can't ever be held to an appointment. By patience, we don't just mean waiting for the right break in the clouds, or for the wind to let up. It means returning to a scene that you believe in later in the day, or during a different season, or many times over the course of a decade. Try all the angles. You're looking through your viewfinder and saying, wow, what a great shot; this one will really be a keeper. Now consider further: You're looking through exactly one angle out of a 360 degree circle. How do you know there isn't an even better shot somewhere around that circle? Be ready: If you know that dawn will break over the mountains in a glorious burst of colour at 5:45 A.M., you can't get there at 5:45. Better make it 4:45. Have everything set up, bring backups, carry a flashlight, wear a watch. Know your equipment: Things can happen fast in natural light. There's just no excuse for missing a shot because you were fumbling with the exposure MASTER LANDSCAPES Dan Richards
  • 16. 10 VIEWFINDER APRIL, 2015 compensation dial or mistook an AF switch for exposure lock. Learn your rig, inside and out. Shoot lots of film: And sometimes a minor shift in angle makes a better shot. If you're shooting reasonable variations, none of this film can be considered "wasted" Learn to love bad weather: Everything from light mist to dark clouds and storms. Pre-visualize a specific look: It takes patience, vision, fortitude, and a half ton of luck, but if you really want to achieve a certain scene quality, you can often do it. Don't be afraid of a little enhancement: True, you can't use fill flash on the mountainside, but you can add flash to a foreground detail. Warming filters such as the 81A can take the blues out of colour photos, and polarisers can work subtle wonders. Get in shape: Landscape photography is not for chronic couch potatoes. If you're thinking in circles, it means you're going to be walking in circles sometimes very big circles. Good hiking shoes are as important a piece of equipment as a camera and tripod. And for God's sake, get out of the car. Good landscapes aren't taken from the scenic overlook. For starters, the places next to the highway are usually blanketed by smog. Learn composition by doing: We can assure you that not one of the photographers here walks around mentally superimposing a rule-of-thirds grid on everything. Yes, all are well versed in the principles of classical composition-and they know precisely when to break them. Good compositions are always found by looking and seeing, and wonder and play, not by draping the landscape in some rigid orthodoxy. Sudha T.R., Chinai Dear Anil Risal Singh ji, Hearty congratulation and a big thank to you and to the Editorial Board for bringing out the Viewfinders so beautiful, informative and useful month after month. In March issue of viewfinder, I found the article "BACK BUTTON FOCUSING" written by Dr B. K. Sinha, MFIAP, Hon FIP, ARPS, Hon. FSoF immensely useful. I tried this technique previously a few times but could not understand it fully. Doc has explained it very clearly and in full detail. I even called Dr Sinha for further query on this. We had a discussion for about 20 minutes where he further clarified that if we use Back Button Focusing, we can set camera on AF-C all the times. We need not to select AF-S. He said that using AF-C focusing mode is useful for both stationary and moving subjects while using the BACK BUTTON FOCUSING. D.P.Bhatia, Chandigarh Dear Anil Ji, I read the March issue of Viewfinder. As usual, I liked it and the pictures are especially excellent and the editorial part is very good too.
