2. Introduction
Steven W. Koinis has led a career as an investor and
private equity advisor for nearly 20 years. Privately,
Steven Koinis is involved with charities supporting
research and treatments for autism spectrum disorder.
In late 2014, Autism Speaks announced the launch of
MSSNG, one of its most ambitious projects to date.
The MSSNG Project was implemented to take
advantage of new technology that allows researchers
to sequence the entire human genome. However,
instead of sequencing just one genome, the MSSNG
Project aims to collect the genomes of 10,000
individuals affected by autism by 2016--the data
equivalent of continuously streaming high-definition
videos for 13 years.
3. Autism Speaks’ MSSNG Project
Supported by Google Cloud, the MSSNG
Project would provide the single largest public
database of the human genome, enabling
researchers throughout the world to pursue
innovative research. As part of its efforts to
fund the project to completion, Autism Speaks
has collected 10,000 unique portraits of
crystallized DNA molecules, showcasing the
basic building blocks of the human body in
striking detail on posters. Each poster is listed
for sale in the MSSNG online store
(www.mss.ng), and 100 percent of proceeds
go toward research efforts.
