2. T he game is due to commence in a f ew hours,
you are in a hurry not to miss one bit of it so
you are driving f aster than normal. You arrive
at the parking
lot, it is so busy with lots of drinking, music
and partying. You are wondering, what
happened, was the games cancelled. No, the
game was not cancelled
neither was it postponed, it is a tailgate party,
we are tailgating.
What is tailgating? It can best be described as
striking a delicate balance between the games
and celebration. It provides an atmosphere
where f ans f eel
f ree to paint their f aces, share ref reshments
drinks and beverages with f ans f rom the
opposing team and anyone else. It is a time
where sports can be
enjoyed, bef ore the commencement of the
game, at half time or af ter the games. It is a
place to have f un and connect with existing
and potential clients.
T hese parties are normally held in the parking
lots around vehicles with open tailgates,
hence its name, tailgate party.
T he Origin
How did this all begin? T his American tradition
dates back to the Civil War around 1861,

3. “Go Big Blue”. T hey
came with baskets of f ood f or ref reshment.
T his was during the battle of Bull Run, it
served as a f orm of support f or the soldiers
to win the ongoing
battle.
Although it cannot be compared to modern
tailgating, it is a classic historical event of
spectators cheering an events. Many are of
the opinion that
irrespective of the zeal of those locals, it was
not saf e to cheer on during a war,
nevertheless, these “FANS” endured and took
the risk, this act has a
direct relationship to modern tailgating
practised today.
T he 1950s signif ied the commencement of
traditional f ootball. Prior to this time,
ref reshment parties were held during the
college game day. During the
f irst college game between Rutgers and
Princeton, the northern team was the f irst to
welcome the tradition of eating out f irst with
f riends and f amily
bef ore the commencement of the games.
Between 1950s and 1970s, tailgating existed
in various f orms and it f inally started gaining
popularity with the f ans
by 1970s.

4. Today, tailgating is more of an art than a
science. Contemporary tailgaters are very
creative in their approach. Typically you will
f ind decent cars with
open trunks, music, barbeques, grills, picnic
tables, beers, balloons, lots of jubilation,
style and colour at tailgating parties.
Don’t be shy, experienced tailgaters would
invite you to join the f un, so f eel f ree to go
along with adequate tailgating supplies as it is
more about
sharing, interaction and love.
Holding a Successful Tailgate party
T he f un f air, pomp and grandeur you f ind at
the parking lot did not happen by chance. For
a successf ul party, a lot has to be taken into
consideration.
Here are some things you might want to take
into consideration prior to your next tailgate
event.
1. Planning: T his is crucial as you cannot do
without it, you do not need a party planner to
achieve this as taking some time out to plan
f or your next
tailgate party will save you lots of stress. You

5. get there prepared f or the event. So bef ore
you head f or the next NFL or NASCAR games,
you need to go shopping f or the tailgate
party. Get a tailgate grill, hot dogs,
hamburgers, chicken, pork, some general
tailgating recipes and some tailgate gear. All
these can be achieved with a
little planning.
2. Invite the Right People: T his is necessary
as they are the ones to make it f un. Send out
enough invitations as not everyone will be
able to attend and
you do not want to be lef t with three persons
biting their thumbs. Invite people with a decent
sense of humour as they will spice up the
tailgate party.
3. Food and Music: Music cannot be
f orgotten, the right type of music is
necessary to make the party a success. It is
better to have excess f ood than
insuf f icient, so do a proper estimation of how
many people you are inviting and how many
f riends you might meet at the tailgate party
so you can adequately cater f or all. T he right
choice of music will get everyone in the mood.
Make a collection that suits the
scenario.
4. Trash Cans and Containers: You do not
want to leave the venue messed as you will
become the scorn of other tailgaters. Trash

6. bags are inexpensive and
handy. Do not go to the party without them.
T hey should be used as storage f or waste
prior to proper disposal. Never toss any
waste on the ground.
5. Chairs: You do not want to keep f riends
standing at the party so you need to go with
some f olding chairs. T his will provide a more
relaxed air.
Tailgating parties are not 15 minutes parties,
some last f or up to 3 hours prior to the
commencement of the games so there needs
to be some measure of
comf ort.
6. Collapsible Tables. Yes it is a tailgate party
and it is to be held around the tailgate of your
SUV or pickup, nevertheless, you will need to
have some
tables as you do not want to over crowd the
vehicle. Meals can be served f rom the vehicle
and distributed to f riends seated at tables
around the park.
7. T he Spirit Flag and Canopy: Most parties of
this nature are held with two or more teams
playing maybe at the NFL game or the
NASCAR, you can come with
the teams branded f lag. It is all about team
spirit and cheering your team side to victory.
T hese f lags can be used to decorate your

party, arrive early, be in a parting mood
looking trendy in the latest tailgate gear.
Following these basic tips
will make you have a f ulf illing event and you
