TheAngry Eye:Response
I wantto start off by sayingthat I have lived…inrelativelywhitecommunitiesformostof my life, and
anyone Ihave met that wasnot white were reallynice andrespectfultome and people aroundthem.
And,inreturn,people aroundhim/herwere reallykindback.IguessI have to sayI've haven’tseen
much racismaround, whetheritwasdirector not. Thoughthere wasa group of white people thatwould
hang out,tellingracistandsexistjokessometimes.Itwasinprivate;only themaround(sometimesme)
and neveraroundthe kindof people theywere tellingjokesabout.Andtheywouldtalkaboutanything
and everything;betweenJewishpeople,toAfricanAmericans,rednecks,evendeadbabyjokes,you
wouldwonderwhere all of themcame from.Itwas weirdforme to adapt to those jokes, andItold
myself theyweren'treallyhurtinganyone,becausetheyneversaiditoutside of theirgroup,right?
In myopiniontothe videosthatwe watched,Ifeel like itwasveryaskew fromthe pointitself.Ifeltlike
it wasintendedforotherpeopleingeneral,butthatthose collegestudentspaidthe price forit,that
theythemselveswereprobablynotracist,andgotunjustpunishmentsforit.Buttheydiddoit for one
credit,soit kindof feltlike awash;theywere essentiallyaskingforit.Yes,Jane Elliott,the
speaker/teacherinthe video,made goodpointsaboutracismandfightingit.Andyes,racismisa very
powerful thingthathappensintoday’ssociety.Buttoreallygetthe point across,the racistpeople
themselveswouldneedtosee thatvideo, andIthinkthatnot manyof those people are actuallyseeing
it,consideringitonlyhasslightlyover221,000 views,andthere are 314 Millionpeopleinthe U.S.A.
alone.It’slike it’s there,butwhat’sreallythe pointif youdon’tadvertise itorputit inpeople’sfacesto
see,like newspapersoradsin otherYouTube videos.
I knowthissoundsveryone-sided,butIdon'tsee as muchracism as I feel like peopleare puttingon
nowadays.Imean,don'tget me wrong,there isstill racisminthe world,Ihearabout itsome times.ButI
feel like, overall,Ihave afewquestionsafterviewingthisvideo; How muchracismis still inthe world
today? How much attentionare people reallydrawingattentiontoit? How much isenough,or isneeded
to reallygeteveryone'sattention? It'squestionslikethese thatmake me questionhow muchof an
impactin today'ssocietyvideoslike theseare reallymaking.Iguessitmakesme feel two-sidedaboutit.
