Sabrina Randolph: Collaborative,
Accountable Teams Key to Success
As Vice President and
Worldwide Controller of
Maxwell Technologies,
Inc., Sabrina Randolph
oversees the worldwide
accounting and financial
reporting functions.
She manages a team
of approximately 25
people including the
Finance Controllers
of foreign operating
subsidiaries, the Corporate Controller, and
various other individuals in direct-reporting
staff positions.
The path to Vice President and Worldwide
Controller presented many challenges
along the way, of which Sabrina accepted
and tackled head on, often working with
others to identify the best solution. These
experiences gave her a competitive
advantage by providing Sabrina with
valuable insight into many aspects of
the organization. She started her career
at Maxwell as the Director of Financial
Reporting and Corporate Governance
in October 2010. Due to growth in the
business, the need to oversee multiple
national and international controllers and
her in-depth knowledge of the organization,
Maxwell created the position Sabrina holds
in August 2013.
Prior to joining the corporate world, Sabrina
attended San Diego State University where
she found that her attention to detail and
analytical skill set went hand-in-hand with
an Accounting degree. After graduating
Summa Cum Laude, Sabrina joined
Petco, where she would eventually
become the Manager of Financial
Reporting.

It is very obvious after you read through this exciting edition of our CWA
newsletter to understand our theme – “Continuous Effort!”
From the profile of our remarkable client, Sabrina Randolph at Maxwell
Technologies, Inc. to the message from Robin Widdis, one of our Executive
Board members and a leader within our Employee Benefits Division, to
finally reading the profiles of so many CBIZ Women contributing to the
success of CWA over the last nine plus years, I realize even more that
contributing towards the culture of a company like CBIZ and making
and owning your personal and professional goals takes enormous and
continuous effort.
We were very fortunate to have our CEO and Chairman of the Board, Steve
Gerard, at CWA’s annual Executive Board meeting in Chicago in June.
Among the many accolades he shared with us regarding our successes, as
usual, Steve also challenged CWA with new ideas and goals as we create
our plans over the next couple of years. With greater efforts and focus from
everyone at CBIZ, we will continue to shape and advance the culture of our
Company as one that intentionally promotes the value of diversity.

Robin Widdis, Business Unit President, CBIZ Benefits & Insurance Services,
Plymouth Meeting, PA. Interviewed by Jennifer Yorke, ES Dublin
“I may not be the
smartest person in the
room, but I’ll always be
the hardest working,”
commented Robin Widdis,
when asked about the
key to her success. “I
push myself hard and
am always looking for
opportunities where my strengths can
add value.”
How long have you been with the
organization? How did you get where
you are today?
I’ve worked for some portion of this
company for 28 years. I started at
Buckman Van Buren in a sales support
role and grew into several other roles
before eventually beccoming a partner
(the only female partner). When we were
acquired by CBIZ, I was manager of
the benefits area in Plymouth Meeting
and worked closely with the Business
Unit President on a number of projects.
I have managed the Benefits, Life,
Retirement and Property & Casualty
areas. I credit my advancement to hard
work, persistence and never passing up
an opportunity to provide assistance or
recommend a plan.
How do you overcome challenges
you encounter?
I’ve been very fortunate to work with
some great people who have pushed
me to be the best I can be and taught
me there is no limit to what I can do.
We’ve all encountered, or will encounter,
challenges at some point – I’m someone
who thinks about the issue or problem
and then makes up my mind to move
past it or fix it, but not dwell on it.
Are you involved in the community or
nonprofit organizations outside of work?
If yes, has this activity had an effect on
your career?
I have been involved, both as a volunteer
and as a board member, with several
organizations in our community. I think
these opportunities to give back have
an effect on you, not only professionally,
but personally and enable you to use
business tools to help build better
community resources and create
networks to help others.
Do you have any advice for young
women just starting out in their career?
Don’t be afraid to try new things. If you
see a place you think you can make a
difference, throw your hat in the ring.
welcome & thank you

out & about: CWA in Our Communities
CBIZ was a national sponsor of the 2nd
annual Mentoring Monday event hosted
by the American City Business Journals
on March 30, 2015. This year, the event
included 43 cities in the U.S., 1,800
mentors and 8,000 mentees. The event
was also used to launch BizWomen, an
ACBJ news site geared toward women in
business. The site receives more than
500,000 visits a month and has 46,000
subscribed to their newsletter.
Using a speed-coaching format, the Busi-
ness Journals invited the most successful
women in each market to act as mentors
and to offer career advice to about 200
women in their city.
The following CBIZ women served as
mentors in their respective markets:
Atlanta – Marion Schremp
Boston – Catherine Latham &
Merrill Puopolo
Chicago – Kelly Wilborn
Columbus – Linda Lombardo
Dallas – Deepa Menon
Kansas City – Karen Fenaroli &
Carolyn Watley
Memphis – Linda Lauer
Philadelphia – Robin Widdis
Phoenix – Zandra O’Keefe

CWA adopted Dress for Success (DFS) as
a partner in 2008 based on DFS’s mission
of promoting the economic independence
of disadvantaged women by providing
professional attire, a network of support
and career development tools to help them
thrive in work and life. This closely aligns
with CWA’s mission of providing training,
development, mentorship, recognition,
and career enhancement tools to our
women professionals and to women in our
business communities. To date, CBIZ, our
associates, and our business communities
have contributed over $350,000 to DFS
affiliates across the country.
The CWA outreach efforts are not limited to
Dress for Success. Other recent outreach
efforts include the support of organizations
supporting and caring for breast cancer
patients, survivors and their caregivers,
as well as educational initiatives, and a
battered women’s shelter.
I am pleased to accept the invitation
to lead the CWA National Community
outreach efforts and am excited to work
with CBIZ associates to
identify best practices
in partnering with local
affiliates. A goal for the
upcoming year is to
capture the synergies
that are possible when
we combine our
efforts. If your office
has not previously
been involved with
DFS, or you or a CBIZ client would be
interested in supporting CBIZ’s efforts,
please contact me at ewisbar@cbiz.com so
I can share some ideas and add you to our
outreach team.

Pro Sales Tips for
Every Day
by Betty Noell, ES Roanoke
For CBIZ Payroll producer
Lisa Theiss, sales has
been in her blood since
she began her career
in telemarketing during
college. Selling for two
major national companies
prior to coming to CBIZ,
Lisa learned important lessons and fine-
tuned sales techniques that she puts into
practice every day.
Here are some tips Lisa uses daily that have
proven successful for her:
1. Don’t focus on rejection or let it stifle your
drive. Stay focused and keep striving for the
next opportunity.
2. Don’t ‘quit for the day’ until you’ve made
one good thing happen – reached one
person, set an appointment or better yet,
closed a sale.
3. Stay organized and use the tools
available! Lisa takes exceptional, detailed
notes and is diligent about loading those
notes into Salesforce.com after every call
or appointment.
4. Having a good system for follow-up and
reminders is a great way to build credibility
with a prospect or client.
5. Work hard to build deep relationships
and connect with internal referal partners,
external partners and groups in the
community. Lisa regularly schedules time
with people in all these areas to better
understand their needs, businesses.
Lisa truly believes anyone can be successful
in sales – with a positive attitude, strong
ability to stay organized, and the desire to
build a strong reputation in your market.

Sabrina Randolph
continued from pg. 1
Sabrina decided to leave Petco to join a
small consulting firm, Vaco Resources,
looking for the flexibility she needed to
start a family.
Working as an employee for a consulting
firm enabled her to eliminate the
administrative tasks of a larger corporate
position, allowing her to learn more
aspects of the business. It was at Vaco
that Sabrina began to understand the
importance of a strong work/life balance.
With a four- and six-year old at home,
Sabrina emphasizes the importance of
having this balance. “A work/life balance
is setting personal boundaries, owning
the means to achieve that balance,
and measuring your success towards
achieving it,” Sabrina commented. “If
the boundaries set are out of my control,
it might be time to reevaluate the job
position because if the balance is off
and non-work related needs are not
being met, an employee can burn out,”
continued Sabrina. Similarly, Sabrina
has to decide daily what is required for
work and what is extra-curricular that may
take time away from her family. Maxwell’s
senior management allows her to set her
boundaries, achieving a great balance
without burn out.
The former CFO of Maxwell was
her biggest advocate, encouraging
her to accept new challenges and
responsibilities. In addition, her direct
reports have given her the encouragement
to step into her new role, giving her the
confidence to continue in her success.
According to Sabrina, the best tool to
being successful is having a strong team
beside you that works collaboratively,
owns their tasks and is accountable to
both management and each other. “I know
I would not be where I am today, without a
team like this.”
“To every woman in the workforce, there
are great role models that women can
look up to. All women can have success at
work and be engaged at home. Make sure
you have the right support system in place
and the right relationships to achieve that
support,” encouraged Sabrina.

Cbiz Women's Advantage August 2015

  • 1. the Advantage W Sabrina Randolph: Collaborative, Accountable Teams Key to Success As Vice President and Worldwide Controller of Maxwell Technologies, Inc., Sabrina Randolph oversees the worldwide accounting and financial reporting functions. She manages a team of approximately 25 people including the Finance Controllers of foreign operating subsidiaries, the Corporate Controller, and various other individuals in direct-reporting staff positions. The path to Vice President and Worldwide Controller presented many challenges along the way, of which Sabrina accepted and tackled head on, often working with others to identify the best solution. These experiences gave her a competitive advantage by providing Sabrina with valuable insight into many aspects of the organization. She started her career at Maxwell as the Director of Financial Reporting and Corporate Governance in October 2010. Due to growth in the business, the need to oversee multiple national and international controllers and her in-depth knowledge of the organization, Maxwell created the position Sabrina holds in August 2013. Prior to joining the corporate world, Sabrina attended San Diego State University where she found that her attention to detail and analytical skill set went hand-in-hand with an Accounting degree. After graduating Summa Cum Laude, Sabrina joined Petco, where she would eventually become the Manager of Financial Reporting. • 2. CBIZ Women’s Advantage: Efforts + Focus Help Shape, Advance Company Culture “ ...contributing towards the culture of a company like CBIZ and making and owning your personal and professional goals takes enormous and continuous effort.” – Nancy Mellard the adv the adv | August 2015 It is very obvious after you read through this exciting edition of our CWA newsletter to understand our theme – “Continuous Effort!” From the profile of our remarkable client, Sabrina Randolph at Maxwell Technologies, Inc. to the message from Robin Widdis, one of our Executive Board members and a leader within our Employee Benefits Division, to finally reading the profiles of so many CBIZ Women contributing to the success of CWA over the last nine plus years, I realize even more that contributing towards the culture of a company like CBIZ and making and owning your personal and professional goals takes enormous and continuous effort. We were very fortunate to have our CEO and Chairman of the Board, Steve Gerard, at CWA’s annual Executive Board meeting in Chicago in June. Among the many accolades he shared with us regarding our successes, as usual, Steve also challenged CWA with new ideas and goals as we create our plans over the next couple of years. With greater efforts and focus from everyone at CBIZ, we will continue to shape and advance the culture of our Company as one that intentionally promotes the value of diversity. Nancy Mellard
  • 3. TheCWASpotlight Robin Widdis, Business Unit President, CBIZ Benefits & Insurance Services, Plymouth Meeting, PA. Interviewed by Jennifer Yorke, ES Dublin “I may not be the smartest person in the room, but I’ll always be the hardest working,” commented Robin Widdis, when asked about the key to her success. “I push myself hard and am always looking for opportunities where my strengths can add value.” How long have you been with the organization? How did you get where you are today? I’ve worked for some portion of this company for 28 years. I started at Buckman Van Buren in a sales support role and grew into several other roles before eventually beccoming a partner (the only female partner). When we were acquired by CBIZ, I was manager of the benefits area in Plymouth Meeting and worked closely with the Business Unit President on a number of projects. I have managed the Benefits, Life, Retirement and Property & Casualty areas. I credit my advancement to hard work, persistence and never passing up an opportunity to provide assistance or recommend a plan. How do you overcome challenges you encounter? I’ve been very fortunate to work with some great people who have pushed me to be the best I can be and taught me there is no limit to what I can do. We’ve all encountered, or will encounter, challenges at some point – I’m someone who thinks about the issue or problem and then makes up my mind to move past it or fix it, but not dwell on it. Are you involved in the community or nonprofit organizations outside of work? If yes, has this activity had an effect on your career? I have been involved, both as a volunteer and as a board member, with several organizations in our community. I think these opportunities to give back have an effect on you, not only professionally, but personally and enable you to use business tools to help build better community resources and create networks to help others. Do you have any advice for young women just starting out in their career? Don’t be afraid to try new things. If you see a place you think you can make a difference, throw your hat in the ring. welcome & thank you CWA Executive Board Members The Board is pleased to welcome new members Wendra Johnson (ES Boca Raton), Roxann Kerr Lindsey (ES Kansas City), Amanda Markos (Corporate Marketing San Diego), Betty Noell (ES Roanoke), Jodi Robinson (FS Kansas City), Fasika Sahlu (FS New York) and Ellen Wisbar (CBIZ Inc., Cleveland). We are excited you said “Yes” to sharing your passion and ideas. Johnson Kerr Lindsey Markos Noell Robinson Sahlu Wisbar A very special thanks to exiting board members Sunny Claggett (CBIZ Inc., San Jose), Lisa Larson (ES Minneapolis), Terri Bur (CBIZ Inc., Kansas City) and Karen Clark (ES Bethesda). Sharing your time, talent and leadership with CWA has helped make it the strong program it is today! the adv | August 2015 “Continuous effort – not strength or intelligence – is the key to unlocking our potential.” – Sir Winston Churchill
  • 4. out & about: CWA in Our Communities CBIZ was a national sponsor of the 2nd annual Mentoring Monday event hosted by the American City Business Journals on March 30, 2015. This year, the event included 43 cities in the U.S., 1,800 mentors and 8,000 mentees. The event was also used to launch BizWomen, an ACBJ news site geared toward women in business. CBIZ Sponsors National Mentoring Event in 16 Cities by Megan Murdock, FS Memphis Mentoring Monday participants from the Minneapolis office: (from left to right) Erin Olson, Kelli Cloutier, Carrie Hobrough, Lindsey Marshall, Deb Busch, Anne Ledwein and Erin Tully. CWA adopted Dress for Success (DFS) as a partner in 2008 based on DFS’s mission of promoting the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support and career development tools to help them thrive in work and life. This closely aligns with CWA’s mission of providing training, development, mentorship, recognition, and career enhancement tools to our women professionals and to women in our business communities. To date, CBIZ, our associates, and our business communities have contributed over $350,000 to DFS affiliates across the country. The CWA outreach efforts are not limited to Dress for Success. Other recent outreach efforts include the support of organizations supporting and caring for breast cancer patients, survivors and their caregivers, as well as educational initiatives, and a battered women’s shelter. I am pleased to accept the invitation to lead the CWA National Community outreach efforts and am excited to work with CBIZ associates to identify best practices in partnering with local affiliates. A goal for the upcoming year is to capture the synergies that are possible when we combine our efforts. If your office has not previously been involved with DFS, or you or a CBIZ client would be interested in supporting CBIZ’s efforts, please contact me at ewisbar@cbiz.com so I can share some ideas and add you to our outreach team. the adv | August 2015 CWA Outreach – Synergizing Our Collective Efforts To date, CBIZ, our associates, and our business communities have contributed over $350,000 to DFS affiliates across the country. • 5. Pro Sales Tips for Every Day by Betty Noell, ES Roanoke For CBIZ Payroll producer Lisa Theiss, sales has been in her blood since she began her career in telemarketing during college. Selling for two major national companies prior to coming to CBIZ, Lisa learned important lessons and fine- tuned sales techniques that she puts into practice every day. Here are some tips Lisa uses daily that have proven successful for her: 1. Don’t focus on rejection or let it stifle your drive. Stay focused and keep striving for the next opportunity. 2. Don’t ‘quit for the day’ until you’ve made one good thing happen – reached one person, set an appointment or better yet, closed a sale. 3. Stay organized and use the tools available! Lisa takes exceptional, detailed notes and is diligent about loading those notes into Salesforce.com after every call or appointment. 4. Having a good system for follow-up and reminders is a great way to build credibility with a prospect or client. 5. Work hard to build deep relationships and connect with internal referal partners, external partners and groups in the community. Lisa regularly schedules time with people in all these areas to better understand their needs, businesses. Lisa truly believes anyone can be successful in sales – with a positive attitude, strong ability to stay organized, and the desire to build a strong reputation in your market. the adv | August 2015 Lisa Theiss ES, Kansas City Congratulations to Carolyn Watley, ES Kansas City, for being named to the Kansas City Business Journal’s Top 100 Powerful People list. • 6. Sabrina Randolph continued from pg. 1 Sabrina decided to leave Petco to join a small consulting firm, Vaco Resources, looking for the flexibility she needed to start a family. Working as an employee for a consulting firm enabled her to eliminate the administrative tasks of a larger corporate position, allowing her to learn more aspects of the business. It was at Vaco that Sabrina began to understand the importance of a strong work/life balance. With a four- and six-year old at home, Sabrina emphasizes the importance of having this balance. “A work/life balance is setting personal boundaries, owning the means to achieve that balance, and measuring your success towards achieving it,” Sabrina commented. “If the boundaries set are out of my control, it might be time to reevaluate the job position because if the balance is off and non-work related needs are not being met, an employee can burn out,” continued Sabrina. Similarly, Sabrina has to decide daily what is required for work and what is extra-curricular that may take time away from her family. Maxwell’s senior management allows her to set her boundaries, achieving a great balance without burn out. The former CFO of Maxwell was her biggest advocate, encouraging her to accept new challenges and responsibilities. In addition, her direct reports have given her the encouragement to step into her new role, giving her the confidence to continue in her success. According to Sabrina, the best tool to being successful is having a strong team beside you that works collaboratively, owns their tasks and is accountable to both management and each other. “I know I would not be where I am today, without a team like this.” “To every woman in the workforce, there are great role models that women can look up to. All women can have success at work and be engaged at home. Make sure you have the right support system in place and the right relationships to achieve that support,” encouraged Sabrina. the adv | August 2015 CWA Exec Board Takes Chicago The Advantage A publication of CBIZ Women’s Advantage Editorial & Creative Staff Alex Elliott, FS Kansas City Joellen Messerli, ES Kansas City Andria Mitra, ES Kansas City Pattie Stahm, ES Phoenix Contributing Writers: Megan Murdock, FS Memphis Betty Noell, ES Roanoke Brenda Piazza, FS San Diego Jennifer Yorke, ES Dublin Ellen Wisbar, CBIZ Inc., Cleveland To submit material, or request additional copies, please contact Andria Mitra at amitra@cbiz.com Taking in the sights of Chicago are Wendra Johnson (left) and Betty Noell.
