We manipulate the planet and all of its creatures. We create, we consume, we build, and we
destroy, but how often do we consider the processes and people that provide unceasingly for our
unquenchable appetites? How often do we consider the consequences? This essay asks that you
consider the inner (and outer) workings of the US food system and then take a position on a
narrowed down aspect of it.
During this project we might ask ourselves any combination of the following: where does our food
come from, and at what cost? How have our foods been processed, conceived, even constructed, and then shipped and
stored? How do we treat the animals we eat? How should we treat them? How are they killed? How conscious are
we of the world we are taking from every single day? Where do we fit in? What do we have to say?
To accomplish your task, you will be using pairings of articles I provide in order to take part in
an ongoing conversation about food. These readings will require you to look closely at what we
eat and how our consumption shapes the world, in both positive and negative ways.
You will need to first consider our relationship with food and the consequences of our eating
habits, on individuals, societies, and the planet that we share, then narrow down your focus to an
individual and focused topic/idea, which you will then research independently so that you might
enter into a scholarly conversation. The goal of this essay is to either make your own claim about
your subject, or to support an already established claim with rational and logical reasons and
evidence in order to convince your reader to take up the same position that you hold.
This essay need not be a soapbox for any political agenda; instead, we are looking for a balance

Regardless of what culture you choose, focus, define and expose its inner-workings and explain what makes this so unique… to you and potentially to others. In other words, whether you’re writing about something intellectual, political, religious, fun or something practical like food, dismantle it as a culture.
As you explore your topic, reach for argumentation. That is, include in your discussion relevant ideas about culture (how we think, act, and behave during our daily lives) and history as they are connected to your subject. Your argumentative stance pertaining to the ways your topic affects us as real human beings should also be included. Ultimately, explain why your point of view deserves our attention… what makes your thesis and point of view significant?
Organizationally, you might start with an experience that helps frame your subject.

These guidelines apply to all three formal essay assignments in this course.
Format: Two to three pages, in 12 point font and double spaced, with one-inch margins on all sides of the paper. Grade deductions will be applied to papers that fail to meet the minimum, and also to papers that significantly exceed the maximum.
The essay prompts are intended to challenge students to approach the literature with precision, depth, and nuance. We allege that there are social issues and issues of language, of relationships, of psychology, and more, in all the texts we have read together.
Some of the prompts will interrogate a term. The logical requirement for this type of interrogation would be that the student author is quite clear in the ways he or she is employing terms.
Students should be attentive to style—their own and that of the author in question. Remember, this is a literature class, so strategies authors employ to present their text are important. Valid and clear use of quotes will be rewarded. Throwing in quotes which are disconnected from the student's argument will be penalized. The total amount of quotes should not exceed one-eighth of the paper. Quotations should always be in the context of one of your sentences, without breaking syntax. You cannot end a sentence, drop in a quote, and begin another sentence. Penalty points will be taken for this.
Students often expect that essay answers simply reflect "their opinion" and thus "no one has a right to grade them." It is true that many and various readings of the texts will be credited, even some which seem to oppose each other. But the argument or the reading will be considered valid to the degree that the student has clearly thought through their conclusion using relevant data from the text, and composed it in a sensible and logical fashion. Make sure you employ the best items from the text for support. If there are elements in the text that would completely negate your reading, don't simply ignore them—your grader will have read the text and will wonder why you ignore such obvious data. Often it is a good strategy to address potential arguments in the body of your essay.
Stay on track. Two to three pages is not a lot of space. You want to streamline your argument and use as much support in as little space as you can. If you wander, try to revise the essay before handing it in so that each paragraph adds to your thesis.

While some people resist change, there is not much any individual—or a group of people—can do to reverse the trend. In fact, no one owns the language. Yet, people have various views about what English is or should be.
One way to understand different perspectives on an issue is to conduct a rhetorical analysis of texts--spoken or written.
Rhetorical analysis
is a way of analyzing what the text can tell us not only about the subject and argument strategies but also about the interrelationship among the writer, the audience, the genre and arguments as well as the cultural values of the writer and of the knowledge community.
For this writing project, write a rhetorical analysis essay (a kind of critical analysis essay) that examines an argument about English as a global language. Start by identifying a text that presents an argument about global English. The text can be of any genre—including newspaper editorial, opinion sections of newspapers or magazines, blogs, websites, advertisements, signs, posters, and so on. (Keep in mind that analyzing short texts could require more effort in interpreting and explaining the text and its context.)
Once you have identified the text for analysis, explore the text and its context by considering the following questions: What is the writer’s purpose in writing the text? What kind of situation is the text responding to? Who is the writer? How does the writer establish his or her credibility? What is the writer’s attitude toward the subject? How do you know? These guidelines apply to all three formal essay assignments in this course.
Format: Two to three pages, in 12 point font and double spaced, with one-inch margins on all sides of the paper. Grade deductions will be applied to papers that fail to meet the minimum, and also to papers that significantly exceed the maximum.
The essay prompts are intended to challenge students to approach the literature with precision, depth, and nuance. We allege that there are social issues and issues of language, of relationships, of psychology, and more, in all the texts we have read together.
Some of the prompts will interrogate a term. The logical requirement for this type of interrogation would be that the student author is quite clear in the ways he or she is employing terms.
Students should be attentive to style—their own and that of the author in question. Remember, this is a literature class, so strategies authors employ to present their text are important. Valid and clear use of quotes will be rewarded. Throwing in quotes which are disconnected from the student's argument will be penalized. The total amount of quotes should not exceed one-eighth of the paper. Quotations should always be in the context of one of your sentences, without breaking syntax. You cannot end a sentence, drop in a quote, and begin another sentence. Penalty points will be taken for this.
Students often expect that essay answers simply reflect "their opinion" and thus "no one has a right to grade them." It is true that many and various readings of the texts will be credited, even some which seem to oppose each other. But the argument or the reading will be considered valid to the degree that the student has clearly thought through their conclusion using relevant data from the text, and composed it in a sensible and logical fashion. Make sure you employ the best items from the text for support. If there are elements in the text that would completely negate your reading, don't simply ignore them—your grader will have read the text and will wonder why you ignore such obvious data. Often it is a good strategy to address potential arguments in the body of your essay.
Stay on track. Two to three pages is not a lot of space. You want to streamline your argument and use as much support in as little space as you can. If you wander, try to revise the essay before handing it in so that each paragraph adds to your thesis.

Around the world, the English language is being used for communication among people who come from various language backgrounds—in fact, a majority of English users today grew up speaking other languages. As a result of these language contacts, the English language itself is changing its shape. While some people resist change, there is not much any individual—or a group of people—can do to reverse the trend. In fact, no one owns the language. Yet, people have various views about what English is or should be.
One way to understand different perspectives on an issue is to conduct a rhetorical analysis of texts--spoken or written.
Rhetorical analysis
is a way of analyzing what the text can tell us not only about the subject and argument strategies but also about the interrelationship among the writer, the audience, the genre and arguments as well as the cultural values of the writer and of the knowledge community.
For this writing project, write a rhetorical analysis essay (a kind of critical analysis essay) that examines an argument about English as a global language. Start by identifying a text that presents an argument about global English. The text can be of any genre—including newspaper editorial, opinion sections of newspapers or magazines, blogs, websites, advertisements, signs, posters, and so on. (Keep in mind that analyzing short texts could require more effort in interpreting and explaining the text and its context.)
Once you have identified the text for analysis, explore the text and its context by considering the following questions: What is the writer’s purpose in writing the text? What kind of situation is the text responding to? Who is the writer? How does the writer establish his or her credibility? What is the writer’s attitude toward the subject? How do you know? Who is the primary audience? Who is the secondary audience? What is the major argument and how is it being built? What are some of the supporting arguments? What other arguments or perspectives are represented? What is the genre and what are some of the characteristic features that are expected? What are the characteristics that are actually found in the text? Is the text effective in communicating the main point to the audience? What can you say about the values and assumptions that are shared by members of the knowledge community?
In addition to analyzing the text itself, you may also find it useful to find out about the medium in which the text was presented. Explore these and other related questions thoroughly to generate ideas for your writing.

An annotated bibliography is the full citation of a source followed by notes and commentary
about a source. The word “annotate” means “critical or explanatory notes” and the word “bibliography” means “a list of sources”. Annotations are not the same as abstracts. Abstracts
are purely descriptive summaries often found at the beginning of scholarly/ academic journal articles. Annotations are meant to be critical in addition to being descriptive.
Format:
The format for an annotated bibliography is similar to that of a research paper. Use one-inch margins on all sides, double-space your entries, and arrange each entry in alphabetical order. This article discusses the problem of unintentional online plagiarism and many
students’ inability to evaluate, critique, synthesize, and credit online sources properly.
Two case studies from different disciplines, which were designed to foster critical evaluation of the Internet and scholarly sources, are discussed in detail. The CARS (Credibility, Accuracy, Reasonableness, Support) checklist for evaluating research sources is also introduced and applied in these case studies. I found this article useful because much of the content of these case studies can be easily adapted to fit assignments in different academic disciplines. One information literacy assignment in one quarter at college is not enough. If students are expected to use the Internet in a responsible way, educators must provide guidelines and relevant experience that allows students to apply those guidelines in practical ways.
