India’s engagement at multilateral forums has significantly increased over the last one decade. It has been playing a constructive role in forums like G-20 (B-20) which has been deliberating on critical issues of global economic and trade governance post the financial crisis. Besides this, India has also joined the grouping like IBSA and BRICS, which again are playing an important role in current global scenario.
CII complements the Government of India’s enhanced engagement with East and Southeast Asia, Africa and Latin America. In recent years, Indian industry too has started taking keen interest on these issues and is looking outward, slowly emerging as one of the significant sources of global investment. CII in association with its partner business associations has formed a Business 20 alliance to feed business inputs into the G-20 discussions on issues which are of direct interest to them.
Through this newsletter, CII hopes to provide an insight to all such multilateral and regional engagements of India and Indian industry.

G20 Leaders’ Summit 2023: A Global Gathering of Influence
In international diplomacy and economic cooperation, the G20 Leaders' Summit is a pivotal event that garners attention from every corner of the globe. In this article, we will delve into the significance of the G20 Summit and explore its roots by first understanding the evolution from G6 to G7 and eventually G8.
Understanding the G8
To comprehend the importance of the G20, we must first take a step back and examine the origins of the G8. During the 1970s, a group of six advanced industrialized economies decided to form an informal alliance known as the Group of Six, or G6. This assembly included the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, and Italy. Their primary goal was to meet annually and engage in discussions concerning political and economic matters of global significance.
The G6 served as a precursor to the more well-known Group of Seven, or G7, which existed when Canada joined the group in 1976. This expansion was initiated under the presidency of the United States and led to more comprehensive discussions on international affairs.
The Inclusion of Russia
The next significant milestone in the evolution of this diplomatic alliance occurred in 1997 when Russia was invited to join, forming the Group of Eight or G8. This decision came during the leadership of U.S. President Bill Clinton and U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair.
The addition of Russia brought a new dimension to the group, broadening its geographical and geopolitical reach. It was no longer solely focused on the Western world; the G8 now included a significant player from the Eurasian continent. This transformation led to more diverse and comprehensive discussions on global issues.
European Union's Participation
The European Union has also played a significant role in the G8. It is represented by the Presidents of the European Council and the European Commission, ensuring that the EU's interests and perspectives are duly considered in these high-level discussions.
The G8 Presidency
One unique aspect of the G8 is its rotating presidency. Each member nation takes turns hosting the summit, making the G8 an inclusive and collaborative platform. In 2023, it is India that has the privilege of presiding over the G20 summit.
The G20 Leaders' Summit in 2023 is a continuation of a rich history of global cooperation and diplomacy that originated with the G6, evolved into the G7, and eventually expanded to include Russia as the G8. This gathering of influential nations from around the world is a testament to the importance of dialogue and collaboration on matters of global significance.

The growing importance of emerging economies, along with the increasing integration of the global economy and financial markets, underscore the importance of broadening the scope of international economic and financial co-operation.
The establishment of G20, comprising around 90 per cent of the global GDP, 80 per cent of the world trade and more than two-third of the world’s population, recognized considerable changes in the international economic landscape.
The G20 plays a vital role in supporting globalization, development of domestic financial markets, regional economic integration, demographics and resource security. Independent business associations from G20 countries formed a coalition named as Business 20 (B20). The coalition acts a bridge between government and business communities of the G20 countries.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
