Efforts to
Accelerate
the Future of
SDN Industry
Piyush Rishi
ver the past few years, there have been a multitude of reports
Opredicting that widespread SDN adoption is not only inevitable, but
explosive. IDC published a study of the SDN market earlier this year
and predicted a 53.9% CAGR (compound annual growth rate) from 2014
through 2020, by which point the market will be valued at $12.5b.
However, SDN itself remains largely out of sight in proof-of-concept trials.
While that means it hasn’t found much of a home in commercial projects, some
companies have fully integrated SDN with their business plans. These
companies include Google, Amazon, Facebook, and Microsoft.
Certainly, 100% utilization is nothing to ignore, and it calls into question why
we haven’t seen SDN truly catch hold on a commercial scale. Executives are
aware of SDN’s benefits, but those benefits are relatively difficult to quantify.
It’s a classic problem -- how do you spur the adoption of an unproven
technology (how do you get a job without experience)? Everybody believes in
SDN, but nobody has the numbers to back it up, so it hangs in commercial
stasis.
Executives are still wary of implementing widespread SDN protocols, even
though SDN runs alongside traditional network infrastructure without issue.
The move toward agile development and continuous delivery is forcing
companies to pursue new goals like elastic scaling, agile provisioning, and
disaggregation. SDN is the key to realizing these goals, but current adoption
rates show a good deal of reluctance. With SDN the network is more easily
maintained, less expensive, and more flexible, as well.
SDN means a faster time to market with new services, and new services mean
new revenue. It’s likely that application delivery use cases will be the ones to
drive SDN adoption, focusing on application delivery improvements and the
subsequent revenue increases. Application delivery will be improved by SDN’s
operational efficiency, network services automation, rapid time to service, cloud
integration, and any number of as-yet-undiscovered benefits that will be noticed
upon full deployment.
In IHS Markit’s fourth annual carrier SDN survey, one-hundred percent of
respondents said they intend to deploy SDN at some point. That’s a little too
open ended, but there are numerous projects and companies attempting to
accelerate the adoption of SDN right now.
Collaboration is at the heart of open source SDN. It seems that every week
there are exciting new projects rising from these productive partnerships.
Recently, the Open Networking Foundation and Open Networking Lab agreed
to become a single organization, combining their 180 companies and 17
partners under one umbrella with SDN standardization as its core goal.
Standardization will make SDN integration much easier, meaning adoption
rates will get faster as they’re identified and implemented.

Management of Intelligent
Open Networks
S
oftware defined networking
(SDN) is not a technology,
rather architecture for the next
generation of networks. By definition,
SDN is the separation of the hardware
plane from network devices and the
operating system that manages network
traffic and security. Traditionally, cloud
service providers, telecoms, and some
enterprises have made significant
investments in closed, proprietary
network solutions from vendors like
Cisco, Ericsson, Juniper, Nokia,
Huawei, and others. These solutions
were designed to allow their customers
to manage mainframe functionality and
client-server applications in a non-
virtualized world. The Internet of
Things (IoT), public cloud,
virtualization, and mobility has
rendered these closed network
architecture archetypes of the past.
The current industry scenario for SDN
is to allow customers to have more
network functionality to control
resources, provision revenue-
generating services from a myriad of
service providers, and deploy software-
based solutions on commodity
hardware. SDN is allowing
organizations to extend their
technology footprint outside of the data
center and to the edge.
Cloud, IoT and 5G are changing how
modern networks are operated and
deployed at scale. Inocybe's Open
Networking Platform is the first to
enable enterprises and service
providers to deploy software defined
networking (SDN) and network
virtualization (NV) solutions across an
integrated and consumable
environment. Inocybe Technologies is
the leading Open Networking and
OpenDaylight Software Defined

Backbones of Inocybe Technologies
Mathieu Lemay, CEO of Inocybe
Technologies, the leading Open
Networking and OpenDaylight
Software Defined Networking (SDN)
technology provider from the data
center to the network edge and CTO of
Civimetrix Telecom a company
deploying Open Access Networks.
Mathieu has more than 20 years of
experience in information technology.
At the age of 10 he was programming
C++, ADA and x86 ASM and then got
involved in networking from the early
Bulletin Board Systems to the first
commodity Internet. He earned a
Master’s degree in Electrical
Engineering with a focus on Wireless
and Optical Telecommunications.
Inocybe Technologies is a member of
OpenDaylight since June 2013 and
Mathieu is currently a committer to the
Docs and Reservation projects. After 9
years at being CEO, Mathieu has
acquired intensive knowledge business
administration.
Inocybe Technologies has been
involved in networking innovation for
over a decade. Their main vision has
always been that network management
is too complicated and consists of too
many manual processes.
With the industry’s creation of the
OpenDaylight ecosystem in 2013,
They saw that the majority of the
members were building products out of
OpenDaylight and the project itself
was lacking in usability.
After years of helping service
providers and enterprises successfully
leverage OpenDaylight as part of their
solutions, we had growing demand to
provide and support the complete open
networking stack. From the data center
to the network edge, Inocybe is now
the leading Open Networking and
OpenDaylight Software Defined
Networking (SDN) technology
provider.
Promising Inocybe Product and
Services
The SDN marketplace is providing
telecom and cloud service providers,
Financial Services Companies and
enterprises with the ability to reduce
costs and latency, improve
performance and reliability while
improving scale and manageability
across all aspects of their network.
Inocybe’s Open Networking Platform,
and OpenDaylight (ODL) Software

controllers, helps its customers to
accelerate time-to-market and
interoperability when deploying
networks. Inocybe’s solutions offer
economies of scale by replacing
expensive network hardware with
software, thus decoupling traditional
hardware functions from closed,
proprietary software. Providing data
centers with benefits including
improved efficiency, enhanced security,
and reduced operational costs. Inocybe
differentiates itself from the
competition by:
● Traffic engineering and segment
routing to increase improvements
in the measurement and
management of network traffic
while allowing for improved
network quality of service (QoS)
● One of the hallmarks of Inocybe’s
solution is their ability to deliver
service function chaining (SFC).
SFC, in essence, creates a chain of
connected network services like
network addressing, firewalls, load
balancers, intrusion detection in a
virtual chain. SFC makes it easier
for network operators to deploy
revenue-generating services,
provision virtual network functions
(VNF), and other solutions more
dynamically and efficiently.
● Full OpenDaylight NFVi
integration with OpenStack.
Having a fully integrated solution
organizations receive greater
customization, improved
operational efficiency, and
scalability of their networks
without having to spend countless
hours and manpower integrating
OpenStack functionality.
Inocybe is about helping its customers
to deploy open and cohesive network
services more efficiently, faster, and
without the hassle of proprietary and
traditional networking solutions.
Challenges faced during their
business days
The organization is lucky to be in an
industry at a point in time when things
are constantly changing. The industry
is at an inflection point. Traditionally,
cloud service providers, telecoms, and
some enterprises have made significant
investments in closed, proprietary
network solutions from vendors like
Cisco, Ericsson, Juniper, Nokia,
Huawei, and others. These solutions
were designed to allow their customers
to manage mainframe functionality and
client-server applications in a non-
virtualized world. The Internet of
13. Things (IoT), public cloud, virtualization, and mobility has rendered these
closed network architecture archetypes of the past. Inocybe’’s greatest strength
has been in predicting, adapting and advancing with the trends as they continue
to grow with the ever changing market.
Advancements in both technology and the industry have driven Inocybe to
implement in the business:
· A focus on service/solution interoperability - Fully integrated and reliable
platform for deploying SDN and NFV solutions that will provide customers
with an end-to-end “SDN/cloud in a box” solution.
· Speed-to-Market - By having consistency between the network layers, it
makes it easier to deploy revenue generating services and solutions faster
and more reliably.
· Focus on a lower TCO - Leveraging standards-based, open source solutions,
customers can employ trusted Open Networking plugins, extensions and
Open APIs for quick provisioning and managing services across virtualized,
on premise, or hybrid cloud environments.

Inocybe’s Target Markets
The benefits gained by Inocybe’s clients such as carriers, service
providers, and enterprises looking to deploy open
networking/OpenDaylight (ODL) SDN and NFV solutions
include:
● Carriers - The target market for carriers are tier 1 & 2
wishing to deploy new communications and services while
bringing efficiency and value to their customers and internal
networks. Inocybe is ideal for carriers that have already
implemented OpenStack within their environment.
● Service Providers - Much like carriers, service providers
want to improve their operations, but do not want cookie
cutter solutions when deploying networking solutions.
Inocybe allows organizations to use a broad range of open

15. source solutions on commodity hardware, thereby reducing
their Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and gaining
considerable speed-to-market advantage when
implementing new services and solutions.
● Enterprises - Many enterprises have made considerable
investments in closed, proprietary hardware and
software solutions. Large companies (especially
financial services, retail, transportation, and
manufacturing) are moving away from closed,
expensive systems and are deploying open networking
solutions such as network virtualization and SDN on commodity servers (and virtualized in the cloud). Furthermore, IoT
has become a reality, and enterprises must have the ability to operate their networks at a lower cost, more scale, and from
the data center to the edge. Inocybe provides an industrial grade platform that helps customers to reduce costs, improve
network flexibility and performance.
2018 Predictions by Inocybe
Artificial intelligence and machine learning will continue to be the most interesting story in technology; but, in 2018, Inocybe
is looking for the actual value added by machine learning to operating models. The convergence of cloud, 5G and IoT will
demand the implementation of intelligent (machine learning) and automated networks (SDN). These software-smart networks
will be the foundation for improving the experience of everything from consumer interaction with voice and visual web
products, to the expansion of B2B services.

26. Asia Pacic Technology Systems:
Advancing Security Services and Network
Infrastructure in the Industry
Asia Pacific Technology
Systems (Private) Limited,
was inaugurated in August
2008 as an IT solutions provider in Sri
Lanka. It was founded to bridge the
gap in the local IT hardware sector for
true value adding solutions, which
were sought by most local companies
at the time. The visionary thinking and
proactive initiation of Founder,
resulted in the incorporation of a
much-needed business entity which,
from its humble beginnings, has grown
into a fully-fledged internationally
recognized corporate.
Asia Pacific Technology System has
been making waves with each project it
successfully carries out. The business
initially focused mainly on small scale
businesses to cater to the void existing
in the personnel systems market and to
fulfill ever demanding customer
requirements.
The Asia Pacific Technology System
motto; “Right things for the Right
reasons,” most precisely puts across
the objectives and aims of the company
in perspective. At times when most
new IT companies struggle to face high
tides to even survive the first two
years, the owner has taken his
company through the challenging times
which engulf any start-up, to green
pastures and beyond, reaching its
eighth-year mile stone. His unwavering
belief in sincerity, trust and keeping his
promises to clients, together with
perseverance, perspiration and being
proactive has taken to great heights.
Magnificent Personality of APTS
Everyone wants to be great and reach
achievement milestones, but not
everyone is willing to commit to the
grueling process that being great
requires. Many people give up after
one try, one failure. They settle for
being average instead of striving and
working to be great.
But, this is a different character that
breaks all the barriers and achieved the
life so fast. He was born in Galle as the
first child of his family. After school, in
the year 2001 he joined with a
mercantile firm as the start of his
career path. He learned about the basic
things in IT field through that job.
After few months he thought that he
knows much better in the field and
decided to start his own store in
Colombo.
Mr. Namal Senararatna, owns a
profitable organization in IT sector
called Asia Pacific Technology

28. ignificant Take of Cloud Strategies in SD WAN
SIndustry
Have you heard of this thing called the “Cloud”? If not then
you have likely been hiding from technology for quite some
time now.
The Cloud is where companies go to access their critical
business applications. Over the last several years companies
have been moving to a number of different Cloud strategies.
With critical business applications in the Cloud, how does
an enterprise consumer get to the cloud? Today, it is done
over the Internet or via a private connection to the
application provider. Most offices today have multiple data
circuits coming into their office. Why? Because if they
cannot get to their applications their businesses go offline.
Traditionally, businesses have hired Senior Network
Engineers to configure the onsite devices that one or two
data circuits terminate into. The goal is to always have
access to these critical applications. The devices
traditionally used can be expensive, require skill sets that
are not available in a given organization, have failovers that
take too long and frankly do not have friendly analytics on
the health of a consumer’s data circuits.
Fast forward to today. Most enterprise companies are
looking into SD WAN solutions to remedy some of these
current obstacles. Depending on the SD WAN option the
consumer is looking into, a single or redundant device can
essentially replace a traditional router, firewall, optimizer or
wireless access device into a single turn-key device. The
device software has a GUI interface that is user friendly and
takes much of the traditional high level network
engineering out of the equation. Depending on the device
being used, the consumer can expect that they can plug
multiple data circuits into the device and with very little
effort setup and manage the device out of a single viewing
panel. One of the major benefits is the ability to make
changes and updates with a single click of a button to all the
devices on the network. For a retail organization that has
several hundreds of devices this is a dream come true.
Additionally, SD WAN devices are constantly policing and

make sure the consumer traffic is taking the
most optimal routes to their applications.
Perimeters can be setup to notify an IT
organization of potential issues on the circuit(s)
in the network. This allows a much better user
experience.
A great example is the WAZE app on my mobile
phone. I can put in the same origination and
destination points several times in a given week
and it will provide various routes based on the
dynamic travel information available at that
moment. The same is true with SD WAN
circuits.
As a global service provider that provides
enterprise business consumers with data circuits
this is a real game changer. Businesses will have
analytics and tools available to them that have
never been so easily accessible. As we continue
to move to a world of voice over the internet and
video over the internet these devices will
enhance the user experience immensely and
provide automatic failover nearly without
incident.
Imagine a sales person on the phone with a very
important client. The office internet drops offline
but is automatically rerouted to the “other” data
circuit. The call is never dropped. It is as if the
incident did not take place. The same goes for
mission critical applications that sit in the cloud.
We live in exciting times as it relates to
technology and if you haven’t heard about the
role SD WAN will play, you most certainly will.
In the near future, organizations will enjoy a
faster experience to these mission critical
applications with less opportunity of
experiencing the inability to reach them.

36. WHY
CLOUDto
Rule
the Future?C
loud Computing has surprised us by its vast uses
and it is getting bigger and bigger. Take a few
examples- Unlimited storage of the emails for
infinite time, 120 hours of videos every minute are getting
uploaded on YouTube, and to support new smartphones, a
server gets activated every 10 seconds and these are just a
few uses of Cloud Computing.
The future has a great promise when it comes to the cloud.
No doubt, cloud computing has taken off in the recent
years with business applications and new innovations. But
knowing where will be the cloud computing by the end of
the decade can be very useful to the organizations.
Cloud computing is a kind of computer hard drive with a
difference of storing and accessing data over the internet.
When the data is stored on the hard drive, it’s called a local
storage and computing. How will cloud computing evolve?
And how will it affect the future? Are some of the questions
an organization aims to find out the answers to. Here are
some predictions for the companies that look to cloud
computing being cost-effective in a long-term.
More Application Availability in the Cloud
It’s estimated that by the end of 2020, more than a quarter
of all applications will be available on the cloud. More than
58 percent of the companies spend about 10 percent of their
annual budget on the cloud, while about 56 percent of the
companies think cloud to be a strategic differentiator. As
researchers predicted, there will be about 8.2 billion active
Dec- Jan 201834
37. mobile devices by the end of the decade with more and more applications to follow. Applications will be made available on
the cloud to build and deploy applications that would lead to better technology and faster response time.
Migration to Private Clouds with More Education
Companies are starting to know the differences between public, private and hybrid cloud computing. Companies opting to
stay with the shared clouds will have the risk of the slower performance and more security threats, which would result in the
migration to private clouds in the future.
Increased Hybrid Cloud Computing
Some industry leader predicts that about 50 percent of the companies will have hybrid clouds by 2017. As we see a number
of companies are adopting cloud, we see CIOs are crafting new and well though strategies, which includes hybrid cloud. If it
was possible, then everything available in the businesses would have moved to the cloud because of today’s complex

38. environment. Which is why hybrid gives more reasons for businesses like on and off premises which
allow organizations to achieve the highest performance of on-premises solutions and also cloud business
model’s management convenience.
Increased Growth of Cloud in the Market
The cloud has been developing over the years and will be accelerating globally in the future. Enterprises
have been relying on the cloud to market, develop, and manage supply chains, sell products and more.
Industry experts expect cloud adoption to hit USD 250 billion by 2017. They also expect that the
worldwide SaaS (Software as a Service) would grow at an outstanding rate of 20.2 percent every year.
With the kind of growth SaaS is promising; it will not be surprising to say that companies will be looking
for Cloud Computing as a service.
Increased Cloud Development
More development will be going to the cloud. As cloud computing is evolving, we can expect more and
more developers going towards the cloud development. An 85 percent of the new applications are being
built with the cloud in mind, which expect to major resources going towards the cloud development.
Companies can expect an increase in the third party, commercial and enterprise developers and API
exchanges. Cloud development will also give us more reasons to adopt it.
More Innovation Due to Cloud
The cloud space has given way to better products, services, and innovation due to increased competition.
The cloud will make the traditional phenomenon that refers to how companies required to become like the
competitors in order to achieve high mainstream success. With the kind of growth and innovation, the
cloud has given to the industry so far, and it would be easy to say that more innovation will be made due
to the cloud.
End of Traditional Infrastructure
Due to the evolving features of the cloud, software can be expected to almost completely stay away from
hardware, since many companies are starting to search many applications available online by eliminating
the need to keep buying new servers. Companies can expect software applications to get more complex
and larger for scalability. The emphasis will be mostly on modular software since applications tend to get
larger. The modular software will require a novel approach to the technology by saying goodbye to the
traditional infrastructure.
The Cloud Computing is leading the industry towards the revolution and only those companies will
survive who will adopt the cloud computing, ultimately Cloud will be ruling the future.

42. The radical change in the innovative technology, is
changing the basics of the enterprises function. The
way of the businesses today is very much affected
by the convergence of enterprise mobility with Cloud
Computing, Big Data Analytics and Social Media. The
mantra for a successful business today is to observe and
adopt the way employees, partners and customers connect
and energetically engage in fulfilling business objectives
and attaining the enterprise goals in record time. This is the
reason, that the enterprises of today have to follow the
current trends in the real time.
There is one more paradigm shift the IT industry is
observing, and that is the entrance of Enterprise Mobility in
the business. With the use of it now critical business data,
complex analytics and reports are getting available to the
decision makers and executives in no time. The vast
acceptance of the Mobile Phones and Tablets burgeon the
businesses.
With anytime-anywhere access to the business data for
swift decision making and improved customer service, is
only getting possible with the use of Enterprise Mobile
Device Management (MDM). In this way Mobility on
Cloud is helping SME’s to get benefited by the
technological advances.
Approximately, 70% of the North American workforce is
now mobile, cloud-based environments require a
transparent mobile policy management strategy. As is
observed, more and more data of the companies, nowadays
is residing on mobile devices and is distributed on off-site
servers, protecting that data is becoming a mission-critical
priority. That is the reason that security concerned
enterprises are more concentrating on the three critical
mobility factors as they evaluate and deploy cloud
computing. The three important factors are:
Easy access to cloud-based data and applications from
anywhere at any time
The availability of the flexibility of the mobile workforce is
only possible with the enablement of easy access to the
cloud-based data and applications from anywhere at any
time. The workers today have to travel from one place to
another switching between various public, private, wired
and wireless networks in order to get access to the corporate
applications. Mobile workers have to manually select and
connect to the best available network in the given location
because of this. This creates a confusion in between the
workers what network to select, what policies to apply and
etc. just because of the connectivity process is left on the

end-users. This whole process is the reason of less
productivity on the part of the mobile workers.
Unnecessary Access Costs
Wi-Fi and 3G like technologies are getting used to access
cloud-based data and applications by the mobile workers
today, from anywhere, on the road, from a hotel or a home
office. This is becoming a reason of extra cost, when you
are supposed to gain from the cloud computing
environment. Most of the time this cost becomes
unnecessary, like paying for LAN or Wi-Fi fees when a
mobile worker is in an area covered by his paid 3G
subscription, using 3G when roaming internationally or
using 3G when a free or low-cost Wi-Fi or LAN option is
available.
Security Concern
Today, many enterprises are investing on endpoint security
solutions and corporate VPNs, data compromise is still a
big threat for enterprises because of a variety of threats that
stem from network bridging, visits to malicious Web sites,
download of malicious software, and use of open and
unencrypted networks. The process of connecting to wired
and wireless networks is a manual, user-driven process
makes the risk high. Despite these high risks, enterprises
can maintain itself against these risks with the Mobile
Policy Management (MPM):
The critical mobility factors of cost control, security and
end-user connectivity for cloud-based enterprises, comes
under a term, ‘Mobile Policy Management (MPM)’. MPM
adds to the overall return on investment of cloud-based
initiatives through reduced costs and improved security.
MPM helps enterprises to:
Pre-define network prioritization policies
MPM helps IT to pre-define network prioritization policies
and assign specific mobile policies to a given network for
cloud and non-cloud data and application access. By
automating network selection and mobile access policies,
MPM boosts the mobile workforce productivity.
Additionally, MPM helps IT to pre-define network selection
rules and assign mobile policies to each type of network.
MPM solution automatically selects the best available
network as defined by IT, connects the user and applies the
relevant mobile policies, while the mobile workers roam
around. This gives the worker a remote access and
connectivity transparent to end-users, saving their valuable
time when accessing cloud and non-cloud data and
applications.
Enables to cost-optimizing network selection
MPM enables an option of ‘cost-optimizing network
selection’ to reduce the cost of mobile data usage by
cost-optimizing network selection. Leaving network
selection up to the end-user can drive data costs far over
budget and create significant cost liabilities, for the
enterprises. For an instantance, a mobile worker with an
unlimited 3G subscription should avoid connecting to,
paying for and expensing hotel Wi-Fi when in an area
covered by a 3G local provider. For the enterprises benefit,
MPM platform avoids unbudgeted data costs by helping IT
to define and enforce a network white list, preventing users
from adding unsanctioned laptop communications options
to their mobile PCs.
Avoids common Data-Security Threats
The data security threats occur only because of the rogue
access points or networks that are in place to lure mobile
workers onto them in order for hackers to gain access to
corporate data like public Wi-Fi access points in airports
labeled “free Wi-Fi” or rogue Wi-Fi placed in proximity to
corporate offices. Though there are security solutions
working for the same, but of no use. When a mobile worker
is working and visiting various places an MPM platform
enables IT to dynamically automate and enforce
network-specific security policies.
Enterprises who are deploying cloud computing are
influencing Mobile Policy Management to gain
organization-wide visibility and control over their mobile
workforce.

44. Forward Networks:
Accelerating and De-Risking Network Operations
Networks continue to become
more and more complex as
they grow in response to
traffic and application demands. Intent-
driven approaches are an important
element of simplifying network
operations and ensuring policy
compliance. Forward Networks has
quickly positioned itself as a market
leader and a thought leader in the
newly emerging space of Intent-Based
Networking, delivering a platform with
the analytical tools and insights that
can verify network implementations
are in alignment with business and
network intent. IBN, as it is known, is
software that helps administrators plan,
design, implement and operate
networks in a way that improves
availability, agility, and efficiency.
Forerunners of Forward Networks
Forward Networks, headquartered in
Palo Alto, California, was founded in
July 2013 by four Ph.D. graduates
from Stanford University, David
Erickson, Brandon Heller, Nikhil
Handigol, and Peyman Kazemian.
These Co-founders are pioneers of
Software Defined Networking (SDN)
and have spent their careers working to
improve networking, as contributors to
OpenFlow. David Erickson,
Co-founder, CEO at Forwards
Networks, had also worked to improve
workload performance in Virtualized
Data Centers. During their extensive
work, they came across various routine
challenges that network engineers and
operators were experiencing trying to
keep their networks running, secure,
and agile. They experienced challenges
themselves while operating some of
the first SDN deployments at Stanford
running OpenFlow. They soon realized
that network operations technology had
been under-invested in for years, and
decided it was time to bring
improvements to network operations
that SDN had failed to deliver. David
and his team built a platform that
simplifies operation of the world’s
largest networks to increase visibility
and reduce the risk of errors and
outages.
Products and Services That Sets
Forward Networks Apart
Forward Networks flagship product,
Forward Enterprise, is a solution that
lets network operators quickly analyze
network behavior to identify problem
areas and proactively head off network
outages. It supports visibility and
analysis into both virtual networks,
such as VMware ESXi virtual
switches, as well as physical devices
from nearly all major network,
security, and application delivery
controller vendors. It lets users get a
better understanding of their network
topology and inventory, and allows
them to test the potential behavior of
the network under any condition.
The primary focus of Forward
Networks within the IBN space is
around network verification, a
systematic analysis based on a
mathematical model of the network to
verify that network implementations
are aligned with network intent as
determined by high-level business,
network and security policies.
Verification can catch errors and policy
violations before they arise in live
network traffic through the intelligent
analysis of current network state and
configuration files. Forward Networks
creates a precise software model of the
network, including every potential
traffic flow of packets within it. On top
of this behaviorally accurate software
model, users can now search, verify
and analyze network attributes and
configuration in unprecedented ways
with greater efficiency. The primary
use case being verifying that all
intent-based policies are accurately
represented in the network’s
configuration and behavior.
Aiding and Planning to Overcome
Challenges
Forward Networks — a startup that
emerged from stealth at the end of
2016 - has built a platform aimed at
service providers and enterprises to
analyze their networks and identify
problems that cause network outages
and to accelerate remediation. The
usual challenges of raising capital and
building a team were overcome
through the reputation and

verication solution for
Intent Based Networking”
accomplishments of the co-Founders. The Forward
Networks team had strong relationships with Martin
Casado, who they worked with at Stanford on OpenFlow
and SDN technology, and who is now at Andreesen
Horowitz (a16z). Andreesen Horowitz became an early
investor, along with DFJ, and A.Capital. With the
excitement surrounding this space and the proximity to
Stanford and Silicon Valley, Forward Networks was able
to attract some of the leading talent from Cisco, Google,
Facebook, Riverbed, Juniper, Apple and others to build a
truly revolutionary platform.
SDN leading toward Intent-Based Networking
SDN in practice has focused primarily on controller-based
architectures primarily driving OpenFlow-based network
devices, with some newer efforts such as OpenDaylight
targeting broader device support. The founders were
amongst the early visionaries that created SDN, and helped
move the industry towards a focus on software and
automation. The basis of SDN is virtualization, which in
its most simplistic form allows software to run separately
from the underlying hardware. Virtualization has made
cloud computing possible and now allows datacenters to
dynamically provision IT resources exactly where they
are needed. SDN promises to enable network technology
innovation and versatility while reducing complexity and
administrative overhead. Intent-based Networking and
network verification promise to build on the vision of
SDN to bring even greater levels of efficiency at scale
and to better align network implementations with
business objectives and policies.
Benefiting the Growth of Clients
Forward Networks customers have increased their
business agility by accelerating network changes and
increasing network availability. Operational costs are
reduced by increasing operational efficiency and
providing greater visibility and verification of network
behavior across the organization. Configuration errors in
the network are eliminated that would cause potential
outage and security violations, de-risking the network
and business.
Rising towards a Bright Future
Forward Networks expects to expand into multiple
industries from its initial success in financial services,
telecommunications, service and IT providers, and large
manufacturing. With any new technology and approach,
there is a certain degree of market education that has to
take place for a new operational approach and new
platform. They plan to continue innovating on the base
platform and build on the main applications that it has
today of Search, Verify, and Predict.
