The bankruptcy of the large South Korean shipping company Hanjin has had global effects that ripple through supply chains. Small businesses are particularly vulnerable when large retailers have priority for limited cargo space on remaining ships. One small hobby shop owner expects his holiday shipments may be delayed, jeopardizing a crucial sales period. While globalization and outsourcing have increased profits for large corporations, they also increase interconnectivity so that disruptions in one area can spread widely. Effective communication is needed to coordinate partnerships and mitigate risks from such bankruptcies that are outside any one company's control.

September 8, 2010
Dear Colleagues,
On January 12, 2010, the earthquake that hit Haiti was devastating. Among other buildings -
including the country’s presidential palace, the old building of the Haitian Bible Society,
churches and cathedrals were destroyed, and countless Bibles were lost under the rubbles.
Indeed, the poorest country of this hemisphere became even poorer.
However, in their hopelessness, many of the survivors have found a renewed faith in God.
Thanks to the generosity from the UBS fraternity we have been able to distribute several
thousands of Bibles and portions. However, even with this great help, we do not expect the
pressure to go down anytime soon.
On behalf of our Board, the Staff at our Bible House and our volunteers, I would like to extend a
warm thank to you and your staff.
It is with a heart filled with joy that I proclaim that your gift has fulfilled its purpose. On behalf
of the countless soul who benefited from your gift I wish to express our heart-filled thanks. Your
gift made a difference; the scriptures you help to give to many of our Haitian brothers after the
earthquake may not have saved a house for crumbling, but it surely saves a father or a mother
from collapsing under the weight of a heart filled with sorrow.
I trust my words will express how much your donations eased somewhat the situation of so many
of my people including the Bible Society staff. With your donation we have been able to provide
spiritual food through scriptures and that is still going on for time ahead, we have a big country
and we want to reach as many as possible. Your donations also helped us to get the first
necessities after the earthquake like water and food; repairs have been completed to the Bible
house as well as the homes of our staff. The 200,000 portions that arrived so quickly, helping us
to reach out to the traumatized victims, giving them comfort. All this made possible through your
faithfulness to God.
Today, eight months after the tragedy we still remember, as so much around us reminds us of
that devastating day. Today we can get around our city in most areas as the rubbles have been
cleaned up, however many buildings are still slanted and can’t be lived in and where houses
stood before we see open areas. Thousands of people are still living in the tent cities waiting for
a change; we are wondering when will that change come? Meanwhile the Bible Society is
reaching out to this targeted people and we know that our work will still keep going on for a long
time. `
