Cost for drugs to be reimbursed should be reasonable from medical, humanitarian, and economic perspectives. Smoking cessation drugs help people quit smoking and improve health by reducing risks of cancer, heart disease, and other illnesses, but also have economic benefits for reducing smoking-related healthcare expenses and costs to employers. While some smoking cessation drugs are already reimbursed in Sweden when combined with counseling, nicotine replacement therapy is not reimbursed despite being easily available and having no tax if prescribed, so there is a discussion around whether it should be reimbursed to further encourage smoking cessation.
