Research objectives (2011-2014 phase):
• Establishment of an IFRI Training site in
West Sumatra in collaboration with Andalas
University and with RECOFTC.
• Editing two volumes based on CPR theory
and IFRI research related work.
• To develop human resources for
conservation and sustainable management
of forest resources from the local to regional
level in West Sumatra by further supporting
INRM Graduate level training of Andalas
University.

(b) Ford Foundation Hanoi Grant to AIT to
develop capacity of Hanoi Agricultural
University and the Hue University of
Agriculture and Forestry in Vietnam in
starting Graduate Program in Integrated
Natural Resources Management

2011 January – December 2014 Phase II
• Four faculty members have been undertaking
their doctoral studies program at AIT and all
four of these individuals were trained in IFRI
research methods in 2011 and are using part
of the IFRI data for their dissertation
research.

5. Training
• Organized IFRI training seminar during 13 June – 04
August 2011. Ganesh Shivakoti, Tran Nam Thang
and Thiha with able assistance of Dr. Ngo Tri Dung
(Hue Univ.) and Eris Achayar (ELPITIGA) took the
responsibility for organizing the training program.
Rachel also participated in the training as resource
person.

9. IFRI Sites Completed
• The case study site for 2011 was re-visit
of training site Ban Tha Wang Sai
Community forest, in Wang Nam Khiaw
District, Nakorn Raschasima province,
Thailand which was first visited in 2005.

10. Planned Future Activities
(1) How to influence Forest policy more effectively,
TOYOTA Foundation Grant 2013-14. Activity starting
with Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam;
(2) To consolidate effective training sites based on diversity
with community, religious and protected forests in
Southern and SE China, Indonesia, Thailand and
Vietnam. Discussion with RECOFTC, Bangkok to
establish and conduct IFRI sites training in Vietnam
and Sumatra, Indonesia.
(3) To make IFRI more visible and available in the region by
involving more doctoral students dissertation research;
IFRI research based books and manuscripts jointly
written with academics and policy personnel; IFRI
trainings plus policy workshops.
