5. Analysis
I have chosen to analyse this double page spread because it relates entirely to the ancillary
product that we have to create because it is a TV listings magazine. The page firstly shows the day
of the programmes that are being depicted, this is highlighted in a section that is red and goes
along the page vertically and also horizontally. The red colour acts as a bold statement on the
page and then it stands out hugely compared to the white colour of the page to clearly signify to
the audience the fact that ‘television on Saturday’ is the primary focus of the double page spread.
Furthermore, the red colour connotes the impression love towards the shows that are being
represented on the page and draws the audience closer to these programmes with the intention
to get them to watch the shows on the page.
The first page of the double page spread uses a dominant image of the main programme of the
Saturday night – the fact that this image dominates the page is a statement in itself because it
conveys the importance of the show. The image is representing ‘The Voice’, a flagship show on
the BBC which is signified with the four main celebrities on the image which appeal to the
audience massively as the central image looks directly at the audience in order to entice them
towards the programme. Below the dominant image is textual content that depicts the
importance of the show, with ‘Pick of the day’ shown in different typography compared to the
rest of the page with the font in white but it is visible to see due to a black box. This shows the
importance of the show because of the way that the graphology on the page is set out, though
the text itself represents further importance as it is shown to be the best programme on the day.
6. Analysis
Next, the name of the show is represented through the use of bold
typography to highlight the name of the show as the primary focus and
people will see the name of this show and be expected to know about it
already due to being a flagship show. The time of the show is connoted along
with the channel that the programme is on and this is done by using a smaller
font to place the focus of the advertisement upon the name of the show.
They are shown in italic however to indicate that they are still important to
the audience, should they wish to watch the show. The synopsis uses
deliberately engaging language in order to involve the audience within the
show with the primary intention being to watch it. The synopsis uses the
pronoun ‘we’ in order to allow the audience to become enticed with the film,
it connects the audience with the TV magazine which is an effective
technique as the rapport between the two is levelled – yet again for the
purpose to get the audience to watch the show. The synopsis ends on the
sentence ‘remains to be seen’, which highlights the fact that the audience are
basically being forced to watch the show in order to see what happens,
leaving the description of the show essentially on a cliffhanger in order to
persuade and engage them to watch it.
7. Analysis:
The other shows on the page are then represented without
images, but it uses the same techniques with the typography
in order to allow the audience to interpret the information
about the shows; including date, time and channel. The
synopsis is then used with the same typography in order to
allow the audience to get information about all of the shows,
with the positives stated to allow the audience to become
involved enough to want to see the show. The page is split
into different sections to clearly indicate the separate shows
and this is done effectively to allow a lot of shows to be fit on
the page to draw a range of audiences towards different
genres of channels – whilst also using rather small font to
allow a good amount of description on the shows.
8. Analysis
The other page similar also, using the same border around the side of the
page though the writing is on the other side of the page so that when the
page is read it allows the audience to clearly see the date of the shows
effectively. All of the sections are separated again, with the same use of
typography as bold is used to highlight the name of the shows before italic
font depicts the information about the show, with slightly smaller font used
for the synopsis to allow enough enticing detail to be used to get people to
watch the show whilst giving them relevant information. All of the shows
are separated with the use of lines, with this page also having a large
section about potentially the second biggest show of the Saturday show
through the use of another image, hence depicting that it is important. The
large image of the horses represents the Grand National instantly, as well as
using the pun ‘hedging your bets’ for topical sense in order to engage the
audience with the programme, before the conventional synopsis is used as
well as a punter’s guide – in order to strongly convince the audience to
watch it.
9. Analysis
The final aspect that is on the double page spread is the different options and
choices for a range of genres on the page which is effective to the audience
because it allows a range of audiences to see a variety of shows so that there
is a lot of choice of what to watch on that day. Children’s choices are shown in
the top right hand side of the page which is entirely effective because
although the audience for these magazines isn’t particularly children, an adult
will see this as well as the use of the image in order to get their child to watch
the shows, it also happens to be the promotion of a new channel on
Freeview, therefore it is shown especially for advertising purposes. However,
underneath this an image of Yaya Toure is shown, a large Manchester City
footballer indicates that a different genre is being represented on the page,
yet again to allow a range of audiences to get information about specific
shows that are on television that day – so a focus of TV magazines is to
engage several audiences and these are broad, which allows people that like
all sorts of genres to gain information about programmes that they will like.
