Usability Test Script
Don Esperon
UX Springboard Student

Hello! My name is Don and I’ll be working with you today as we explore an app that is currently under
development. The first thing I want to make clear right away is that we’re testing the app, and not you. The app
is called Likely. To give you an overview, the app can help users define and keep track of the goals that they
want to accomplish, while also allowing users to accomplish goals in a social manner. In order to know if the app
will work well and is intuitive, we will be testing a few key features of the app.

Today you’ll be looking at a prototype. It looks like an app but isn’t fully designed and not everything is
clickable. Just let me know what you’d expect to happen. We will be conducting a moderated usability test, and
the session should take about 20 to 30 minutes. So I do not want you to worry about being right or wrong, as any
input is valued. You are helping me develop a brand new idea that has plenty of room to improve and evolve as a
product. Your feedback will help me iterate upon the prototype!

This will be a big helping me figure out what works and what doesn’t. Also, please do not be concerned about
my feelings. We’re doing this test to improve the app, so I value your honest reactions. If you have any questions
as we go along, feel free to ask them. I may not be able to answer them right away, since we’re interested in how
people do when they are figuring out the app for themselves. But if you still have any questions when we’re done
I’ll try to answer them then. And if you need to take a break at any point, just let me know. Alright, let’s begin!

Creating a Profile

Goal: To test if a user understands the profile creating process, and to test whether users can logically
navigate through the preset menus.

Script: Before clicking anything just yet, what about the screen grabs your attention? What do you
think you can do here?
What button would you click on to create a profile? What do you think will happen when you click on
next?
What screen do you think will come after the basic information screen?
What screen do you think will come after the upload a profile picture screen?
What screen do you think will come after the “current goals” screen?
This is the last of the “create profile”menus. Do you think these options allows users to fully reflect
themselves well in a goal tracking app? On a scale of 1 to 10, how intuitive was creating a profile?

Now you have a new profile created. What do you think this screen does? On a scale of 0 to 10, how
intuitive is the profile screen?

Thanks, you did great! Now that we’re done with creating a profile, was anything confusing or
missing?

Main Navigation Tabs

Goal: To test if a user understands the main navigation tabs, and whether users can understand the
overall functionality of the app after going through the tabs.

Script: Now I want you to focus on the main navigation of the app, which are the 4 icons on the bottom
of the screen. Before clicking on anything, what are your thoughts on the presentation and
arrangement of the tabs?
Now click through the various icons on the bottom of the screen, and think about what each tab does.
(After each screen ask the user, “What do you think is the purpose of this screen”.)
After reviewing all of the screen, does the app make sense to you? In one or two sentences, please
describe what the app does? On a scale of 0-10, how intuitive is the flow of these screens?

Thanks again! Now that we’re done with looking at the navigation, do you have any questions or
feedback for me?

Creating a Goal

Goal: To test whether a user can understand the goal creating process, and to test whether users can
logically navigate through the preset menus.

Script: Now please click on the bottom left icon of the profile screen, which will take you to homepage
of the app. Thanks! Now I want you to think of a goal that you want to accomplish. I want you to keep
it in mind as you go through the goal creating steps. I want to know how intuitive and flexible it is,
given the goal that you have created.
For your current task, I want you to create a new goal. Which button do you think is the button to
create a new goal? After clicking that button, what button do you think will come next?
How well does this screen fits with the goal that you have in mind? What screen do you think will come
after the goal screen window?
How well does this screen do in making your goal more social? What do you think the next screen will
be?
How well does this screen do in attaching achievements to your goal? On a scale of 0-10, how intuitive
was the goal creating process to you?

After clicking save, now you have a new goal created. Thanks, you did great! Now that we’re done, did
you have any questions for me or feedback. Was anything confusing or missing?

Updating a Goal

Goal: To test whether a user can understand the goal updating process, and to test whether a user can
navigate between the goal updating and goal sharing process.

Script: The next task I would like you to do is update a goal. Please navigate back to the homescreen.

I want you to imagine that you have just completed your daily running goal, and you are ready to mark
that activity as complete within the app. How do you think you would mark the goal as complete?
What do you think of the screen? What do you think you can do?
Once done, hit save, and you will be redirected to the home screen. Did you notice any changes? From
1 to 10, how intuitive was this process of updating a goal?

Now imagine that you want to share your activity. Which button do you think you will need to press to
share a goal?
What screen do you think will come after the achievements section?
What screen do you think will come after the “share posts” section?
The social screen has appeared. What catches your attention? What do you think you can do here? On
a scale of 0 to 10, how clear is the functionality on this screen?

Thanks, you did great! Now that we’re done, did you have any questions for me or feedback. Was
anything confusing or missing?

Conclusion of Script

Thanks, you did great! Now that we’re done, did you have any questions for me or feedback for me?
Thank you for helping me test the new app! Is it okay if I reach out to you later, in regard to testing the
next iteration?
