This document introduces the Telepathy framework, an open source project that allows for communication across multiple protocols like XMPP and IRC. It is used in desktop applications like Empathy and mobile Linux devices from Nokia. The framework consists of libraries for C, Qt, and Python that provide common APIs for instant messaging. It supports popular protocols through components like Gabble for XMPP and Butterfly for Windows Live Messenger.
