Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.

"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

1. Know What is Low-Code Development?
LCDP - A low-code development platform is software that produces an environment programmers utilize to
build application software through GUI-graphical user interfaces and configuration rather than common
computer programming.
Low-code development,i.e., LCDP (or rapid-application development platforms) give ‘native developers’ with
tools to develop simple process applications with limited oversight. These tools simplify the application
developing method and are often applied for simple process applications.
Low-code is a process to create and develop software applications quickly and with minimal handcoding. It
facilitates proficient people to produce value instantly and more reliably.
The tools provide businesses with the ability and expertise to develop simple apps without enough technical
knowledge. The purpose is to introduce coordination into what can be a complicated and lengthy app
development process.
These platforms are generally drag-and-drop conditions. Rather than writing hundreds of lines of complex
code and syntax, low-code platforms enable users to develop entire applications with advanced user
interfaces, integrations, data including logic quickly and also visually. Low code platforms are a result of
common application development that is based on specific system demands and even hand coding.
Take a glance at the common low-code development platform looks like:
A visible IDE: An environment for graphically representing the UI, workflows, and also, data models of your
application and, where required, supplementing hand-written code.
An Ultimate Guide To Know Low-Code Development!
2. Connectors to multiple back-ends: Automatically manage data structures, storage, as well as retrieval.
Application lifecycle manager: Automatic tools to compile, debug, deploy, and sustain the application in a
test, staging, and also production.
Further, on those basics, No two low-code tools are exactly equal. Some are considerably limited and more
similar to a visible database front-end, such as FoxPro in the 90s. Few concentrate on niche business
requirements, like case management. Others have embraced the low-code term to define a purpose-built tool
that has few to do with initial application development.
Here are some Low-Code platforms features & capabilities-
• Drag-and-drop design and development
• Alliance with other apps
• Visual modelling
• User management including team roles
• Built-in workflow
• Security
• Monitoring and Reporting
Things you must look in a Low-Code Development Platform-
Visual Development
The very first thing you must decide while building low-code applications. All right low-code consist of
powerful visual development tools, producing it simpler to take code modules and also link them together
visually.
Simple Deployment
Your low-code applications will be worthless and ineffective if you can’t deploy them as quickly as you
develop them. That’s why it’s essential to have a low-code development platform that allows you to deploy
and manage low-code applications without any trouble.
Security and Scalability
An excellent low-code platform will enable you to scale your applications as your business expands. Thus,
this indicates that you don’t need to develop a new app every time the older one couldn’t support
3. growth. If there is no proper security for your systems, low-code development tools will become a burden to
your business, Instead of an asset.
Let’s check out the top benefits of Low-Code platforms-
Whether it is business users building an app by own or analysing the development method for coders by
automating standard processes, low-code development makes it simpler than regularly to build flexible apps
to get particular tasks accomplished.
Developed Coordination
For long-term, apps developed with low-code platforms support organizations to grow more active. Visible
design that provides drawing rather than coding can significantly speed-up development. Connect limited
coding with automatic testing? That’s how you can develop your apps quicker than earlier.
Reduced Expenses
Along with the ability and skills to develop more apps in a shorter time, decreasing expenses. But, wait!
That’s really not the only driver. Low-code development diminishes the requirement for more developers,
and it lowers the resource hiring costs. And, the best low-code platform can make everyone in the company
—not just IT—more fruitful.
4. Lowering Risk and Higher ROI
With a low-code platform, all the safety-security, cross-platform assistance and data integration skills have
already been made. And, also they can be customized efficiently. As a result, developers can concentrate on
resolving business difficulties instead of ordinary, error-prone technical specifications. The risk of terrible
crash diminishes significantly.
Excellent Client Experience
Low-code development affects more than the IT industry. The downstream results of enhanced speed
including excellent client experience. Including low-code development, businesses can instantly modify to
market improvements or customer demands.
Eliminating IT Skills Gap
The automatic, visual compilers in low-code platforms ingest a lot to “equalise the sporting arena.”
Knowledge of particular languages isn’t necessary, nor do they need to have years of experience in that field
or to use them. Hence, many developers can contribute and work on a project. In most cases, also non-
technical professionals can learn to develop their individual prototypes. Waiting for IT assistance becomes a
matter of the past.
Simple to make changes
Low-code development can make switching apps; modifying them to adopt new requirements is simple.
Without any need to go for complex coding, low-code development helps instant change whenever it’s
necessary.
Rapid Transformation
In today’s fast-growing digital world, a transformation is required. Low-code development eliminates
complexity from establishing high, modern business applications. And, also decreased complexity means
smoother sailing.
5. Innovation
Hand coding an application is really time-consuming and also labour-intensive job. With low-code platforms,
all that goes away. And it results in, developing an innovative modern functionality or customize features
without the mundane pulling them down. In addition to its direct benefits, this turn helps to retain the best
performers more interested, engaged and enthusiastic, which can support you keep a happy, healthy and
stable team.
With these low-code benefits, businesses are better implemented to adapt and react to fast-changing business
conditions instantly.
To conclude:
Whereas there has been an eruption in the number of low-code development platforms presently, that doesn’t
indicate the market is becoming immersed. Competition is assuring that all of these business people are
struggling to produce the most for your money.
Low-code isn’t of decreasing the value of developers. Low-code engages teams of developers to design more
value instantly while picking on their knowledge of how to build and manage high-quality web and mobile
applications.
