2. Technology and the Common Core State
Standards are a natural fit: after all, the
standards are peppered with references to
technology, digital tools, and multimedia. But
though the Common Core standards tell us what
to teach, they don't tell us how to teach it—or,
in this case, which technologies teachers and
students can use to implement the standards.

3. How Technology Can……
1. Help us plan, teach and track
every student?
2. Track CCSS progress?
3. Differentiate lessons,
orchestrate class discussions,
create a student centered
class?
6. The center focus for me is how
to make technology help me teach
and my students learn so we
maximize teaching/learning
opportunities inside and outside
the classroom.
7. This is what has driven the change in my
classroom culture.
So how does my classroom look different
and how did I get there?
8. Today’s Agenda
Technology for teaching/learning
in and out of the classroom
Tracking students, CCSS,
responding to data
Technology that supports 21st

student
Formative and summative
Share common assessments
Support students with extra

Use appropriate tools strategically.
19. Tracking CCSS with
Assistments
Tag problems with CCSS
Discuss progress with
students
Students set goal for next
homework

evaluation tool
22. What does ASSISTments
do for the Teacher?
Tracks every student every day
More time to plan
More time to teach
Track CCSS daily, weekly,
quarterly….
Adjust teaching as ongoing process
24. What does ASSISTments do
for the Student?
Gives correctness feedback
Use of own and class data
Adjust their learning tactics
Own their learning in
response to data
28. Hint 1 of 3
Enter
answer or
ask for hint
2 of 3
29.
30. CCSS Mathematics Standards
for Mathematical Practices
CCSS.Math.Practice.MP3
Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
Open Response essay and essay
critiques
33. Where to begin?
Find tools that work for you, your
students, and available technology
Start with one routine and train
your students, add routines when
appropriate
Adjust teaching/learning as a
ongoing process
What we choose to use is important, too many tools becomes a distraction to teaching and learning rather than an enhancement to the process
Knowing when and how to use tools to implement and track the goals of learning is also important
What is the impact? More time? Better tracking? More support to students?
Today we are going to look at some of the technologies I have found that help me to this.
I use technology to deliver CCSS using all these tools.
Briefly describe this tools and spend a little more time on a few that have influenced the change in my classroom culture the most.
All FREE, some easier to learn than others but all worth the learning curve.
Use Edmodo for collaboration an communication ------to respond to data feedback ongoing, at night too…….. Here they were helping each other with the square root homework. I also check and answer questions but most of the time they are helping each other. This type of collaborative learning is possible because of this site for communication and because wey use ASSISTments which gives them correctness feedback online while doing homework……more about that in a minute.
Use Edmodo to respond to data feedback ongoing, at night too…….. They were helping each other last night.
For example, Learnzillion lets you plan content delivery around the CCSS with video, math practice and lesson support to the teacher.
Deliver some of the content at home so there is more time to work on math in school
Introduce Assistments
Handout page 1 - Example 1 on page 1 of hand out……….Deliver content at home and at school. My students do some homework in school collaboratively and then enter answers at home online with ASSISTments.
This is a daily formative assessment item report, it shows the ……..(review the report, direct to handout example)…
Only 5 questions but structured from basic knowledge to application of knowledge. Percent correct and common wrong answers generate discussion and math explanations.
Student models how to solve number 5 about the giant quilt square that is 28 by 28.
After this model, students continue to discuss what they did wrong and why as they clarify their thinking.
tagging CCSS, discussing progress or lack of, students learning. IT is about the data NOT THE GRADE. I teach students this and they shift to this understanding. Sometimes parents too
Teach kids to see this as information not grades. Students shift their understanding to a growth mindset learner. They understand that learning happens in the errors and analysis of work.
This is another example of how data can be tracked by common core. This is a display of the homework data.
This is another example of how data can be tracked by common core. This is a display of my benchmark test of 6th CCSS at the start of the year. A quick analysis has the right things at the top and bottom but I have some concerns about the middle which show some difficulty with operations. In the real report the problem used can be displayed by clicking on the problem number. (click)
My choice of questions online to assess what I am doing.. Not self paced computer learning by the students.
Tell what the kids are saying.
----- Meeting Notes (10/12/12 08:54) -----
Once I teach students how to infer from data……we discuss strategies for adjusting learning tactics. For examlple, we set a goal of percent of achievement and if student find they are way off we talk about the what they can do at this point….
I can’t believe the way I used to do homework. The kid agree that it was a waste of time.
Due to Answer feedback from assistments student perservere at problem solving, even at home……
Example 3 in handout: This is how I use my data to Differentiate instruction in my class. This is the homework data display by student averages. This allows me daily Flexible groups for collaborative work, enrichment, and re-teaching in class.
Here is another example of what ASSISTments can do. If students enter incorrect answer then they can ask for hints to help them. The final hint is the answer if they don’t get it.
Example 4 in your hand out is the mastery report for this assignment. Student were assigned additional practice with this skill building set. I can track students. This is the results of the data driven instruction. I still have two students who are still struggling. They had to stay after school for some extra review with me.

Students critique selected essays.

All so overwhelming, This is a lot. Talk about the start with one small routine and it is different for each teacher. You can build your own work or start with pre built,
The pre-built content by search in folders.
Pick one thing right now ONE thing you can start on Monday. Never stop trying new things when you find technology that will work for you, I sign up and try new things all the time. I only bring the best tool to my student to try.

Thanks Barbara, My husband and I were both middle school math teachers. Neil was also a computer guy and while he was teaching he realized that so much of what teachers do can be done by computers. You got into teaching to inspire students and respond to them. Not to do what computers can do for you. So Neil invented the idea of ASSISTments and started to get grants to fund the research.
He has received over 10 million dollars in federal grant money to build and study ASSISTments. You can go to his university web site and read all of his research. So ASSISTments was built at WPI by graduate students in computer science.
First of all you need to take baby steps. If you want to use technology to really change your teaching you just have to start. Then as Barbara said you get to pick your trajectory. Here is Tom having learned to walk he then built his own thing to do.
