Student: Karen Culbreath
Week 4 Assignment: Due at the end of Week 4.
Overview
Last week, you engaged in an analysis and wrote a report describing the use of technology and
information systems to enrich campus curriculum, enhance teaching and learning, and generally
integrate technology into our campus improvement plans to effectively integrate technology and
instructional leadership. Your analysis and report should provide the necessary background for
the Week 4 major assignment – developing an action plan for gathering, analyzing, and using
data from a variety of sources for informed campus decision making focusing on integrating
technology, instructional leadership, professional development and organizational leadership.
As a result of this week’s assignments, you will be able to:
   • Examine and assess procedures for gathering, analyzing, and using data from a variety
of sources for informed decision making regarding the integration of technology,
       instructional and organizational leadership (SBEC Principal Competency 7 indicator);
   • Design and apply skills for monitoring and evaluating change and making needed
adjustments to achieve the campus vision and goals, including the integration of
technology as described above (SBEC Principal Competency 7 indicator).
Both of these outcomes are elements of Domain II, Instructional Leadership.
In writing your Week 4 action plan, use your interviews, your readings, including campus and
district improvement plans as well as any technology plans, and your Week 3 report to make
sure the action plan:
   •   Identifies data gathering sources;
   • Provides a description of an organizational chart describing decision making
responsibilities regarding the integration of technology from central office personnel to
       campus leadership and staff;
   • Describes comprehensive professional development activities to achieve your action
plan (this may utilize information from the previous three weeks of readings and
       activities);
   • Includes an evaluation plan to assess the progress and success of the action plan.
Students will be asked to post their action plan on the Discussion Board and each student must
review and comment on at least one other action plan focusing on organizational leadership
designed to maximize the use of technology in data gathering and decision making.
Submit your assignment by 11:59 PM on the seventh day of Week 4.

Principal The Principal will ensure that each staff member on their
campus is following the districts’ plan.

The Principal will provide on -going support through budget,
planning time, and Professional Development to ensure the

on the campus STaR Chart.

The Principal will communicate with the administration on the
technology progress and needs of the campus.

They will provide parent training as well as student training on
the responsibilities of technology use. They will delegate the
presentation to the Technology Campus Rep and ensure
that teachers are putting it into their curriculum.

The role of the Principal is extremely important because they serve as the bridge between the campus
and the administration. They must ensure that the campus is following the district guidelines and
initiatives, but also they must guide teachers in the direction that will follow the campus vision. Principals
must have knowledge in technology as well in order to model what they want their teachers to do and
what the classroom should look like. Basically, how much technology improves on your campus is in the
hands of its leader, the principal.

Become "Digital Natives" through job embedded training.

Implement Technology in the classroom on a daily basis.

Provide a list of classroom needs to Campus Technology Rep. at
                                          the end of each year.

Communicate with students and parents via technology.

Put classroom information and update websites weekly.

Provide students with other resources via websites.

Students Benefit from the technology and technology integrated learning that they
need in order to be successful 21st century learners.

Week 4 Assignment, Part 2: Professional Development Planning
Using the campus and district improvement plans, and any suggested technology
improvements, develop professional development activities that include the following:

• Reference analysis and lessons learned about the technology needs from the Week 3
    report;
• Addresses professional development designed to improve the gathering, analysis and use
    of data from a variety of sources;
• Includes professional development to improve decision making in the integration of
technology with instructional and organizational leadership.

                                    Professional Development Plan

Objective: To develop professional development activities for Kaufman in order to increase the level of
understanding of technology within the classrooms to improve student achievement.

    • EMS-ISD staff members will attend on-going Professional Development in the area of data
comprehension and technology for use in the classroom. This will include training in STaR Chart,
AEIS/AYP, PEIMS, INOVA, Triand, and The Texas Long Range Technology Plan.

    • Teachers will complete a Technology Certification by attending Professional Development
provided by their grade level/subject Curriculum Director.

    • Teachers will be assessed in their understanding of technology use in the classroom and will
indicate technology TEKS in their lesson plans. Teachers will also attend a 6 hour yearly
technology update to keep technology certification. This will be offered by the district throughout
        the summer and school year.

    • Teachers will collaborate throughout the year on technology and receive on-site training and
mentoring from the technology campus rep and/or mentors.

    • Technology will be used and model at all Curriculum Meetings, Department Meetings, and
Faculty Meetings for additional modeling and training.

    • Teachers will be surveyed at the end of every year to assess the Professional Development
needs in the area of Technology for the following school year.

    • Teachers will be given adequate time/training on district websites and website updates
throughout the year. Teachers will be given on campus time, once a six weeks for two hours, to
implement updates to their websites. The Campus Technology Rep will also update the campus
        websites during this given time.

    • All Professional Development sessions will be evaluated by participates in order to assess its
        importance, understanding, and effectiveness.

In order to improve technology use and understanding at Kaufman, we must first start with
valuable and useful Professional Development in the area of technology. Although our district is off to a
good start and we have tons of hardware, we must improve in the areas of using software, using
technology to collect data, and most importantly increase the use of technology in the classroom. The

Texas Long Range Plan has been implemented to move our classrooms in a new direction and we must
train our staff and ensure a great understanding of the value of technology. The purpose of the
Professional Development and the decisions we make must be data driven and should focus mainly on
student achievement. We also want to provide useful tools that will empower our teachers to bring the
21st Century into all of our classrooms and to encourage our staff and students to be lifelong learners in
the area of technology.

Week 4 Assignment, Part 3: Evaluation Planning for Action Plan
The technology action plan integrating instructional an organizational leadership must include
evaluation components that provide measurable outcomes designed to address the following:

• Uses data and other analysis from the Week 3 report, including using the campus and
    district improvement plans, and local or state technology plans;
• Provides assessments and/or monitoring reports measuring professional development
designed to use technology to improve the gathering, analysis and use of data from a
    variety of sources;
• Provides assessments and/or monitoring evaluating professional development to improve
decision making in the integration of technology with instructional and organizational
    leadership.

Technology Action Plan - Objectives and Evaluations

Objective 1: To improve student achievement through the increased use of technology
in the classroom.

           • Technology TEKS will be added to the Forethought/Eduphoria lesson
planning system in order for teachers to document the use of technology.

           • Students will be assessed in understanding of technology toward the end
of each school year through benchmarking. Data from Benchmark results
will be used to assess the use of technology in the classrooms.

Objective 2: To increase the use of technology at all grade levels through effective
Professional Development. (See Professional Development Plan).

           • Assessing the effectiveness of the Professional Development will take
               place through individual workshop evaluations.

           • Overall effectiveness of the Professional Development will be assessed
through the STaR Chart survey at the completion of each school year.
Other input will come from a Campus Teacher Surveys to assess campus
needs and provide teacher input into the planning of future Professional
               Development in Technology.

Objective 3: To increase student, staff, and parental access to technology both on
campus and at home.

           • Kaufman will educate students and parents on issues such as safety,

Page 11 – Revised October 2009
EDLD 5352 Instructional Leadership: The Technology Link

etiquette, communication, and information that can be obtained through
               the use of technology.

           • Technical support will be provided by the district in order to have an
effective and high-tech computer system both on campus and at home.

           • Students in need will be provided equipment to use at home in order to be
a 21st century learner and parents will be trained in the equipment as well.

Objective 4: Staff Support and Leadership

           • Administration will provide financial and training support to campuses as
               well as staff members.

           • The technology plan will be reviewed and assessed each year and the
administrative team will evaluate the improvements each year through the
               STaR assessment and teacher evaluations.

           • Campus Administrators will ensure staff support through job embedded
and on-going training of teachers in the area of technology and provide
classroom support through walk through and evaluation feedback.

           • Campus Administrators will make sure that the training needs of their staff
are being met and that the budget supports the technology needs of the
               campus.

The overall Action Plan that I have put forth means that all students at Kaufman will
have at home access to equipment and be trained, as well as their parents in using it.
This Action Plan also means that teachers will have a great understanding of
technology and will use it in their classrooms daily. We must increase the use of
technology at every grade level, but also teach responsibility, safety, etiquette, and
programs. We have a very long way to go, but it is of vital importance that we make a
drastic move toward the 21st Century. This move involves all stakeholders and will only
be successful if we train, evaluate, and add to this program on a yearly basis. The
Technology Initiative must be on-going and increase everyday in order for us to "catch
up" with our students, as well as other countries.

Week 4 Assignment, Part 4: Posting your Action Report and Responding to Other
Students’ action plans
Using the discussion board and the blog that you have developed, please write and post
your action plan, and be sure to:

       • Read and review at least two other action plans

       • Respond to other action plans by posting your comments and reflections

The purpose of the action report is to provide you with recommended procedures for
gathering, analyzing, and using data from a variety of sources for informed campus decision
making focusing on the effective integration of technology in curriculum, instruction,
assessment and professional development. Students may wish to use this action plan as
one of your school improvement projects for your Electronic Portfolio. You may also use the
Week 3 and Week 4 assignments as campus supervised hours for your internship logs. As
indicated these two weeks fall under Domain II, Instructional Leadership, and address
   elements of Competencies 4, 5 and 7.

Technology Action Plan

  • 1. EDLD 5352 Instructional Leadership: The Technology Link Student: Karen Culbreath Week 4 Assignment: Due at the end of Week 4. Overview Last week, you engaged in an analysis and wrote a report describing the use of technology and information systems to enrich campus curriculum, enhance teaching and learning, and generally integrate technology into our campus improvement plans to effectively integrate technology and instructional leadership. Your analysis and report should provide the necessary background for the Week 4 major assignment – developing an action plan for gathering, analyzing, and using data from a variety of sources for informed campus decision making focusing on integrating technology, instructional leadership, professional development and organizational leadership. As a result of this week’s assignments, you will be able to: • Examine and assess procedures for gathering, analyzing, and using data from a variety of sources for informed decision making regarding the integration of technology, instructional and organizational leadership (SBEC Principal Competency 7 indicator); • Design and apply skills for monitoring and evaluating change and making needed adjustments to achieve the campus vision and goals, including the integration of technology as described above (SBEC Principal Competency 7 indicator). Both of these outcomes are elements of Domain II, Instructional Leadership. In writing your Week 4 action plan, use your interviews, your readings, including campus and district improvement plans as well as any technology plans, and your Week 3 report to make sure the action plan: • Identifies data gathering sources; • Provides a description of an organizational chart describing decision making responsibilities regarding the integration of technology from central office personnel to campus leadership and staff; • Describes comprehensive professional development activities to achieve your action plan (this may utilize information from the previous three weeks of readings and activities); • Includes an evaluation plan to assess the progress and success of the action plan. Students will be asked to post their action plan on the Discussion Board and each student must review and comment on at least one other action plan focusing on organizational leadership designed to maximize the use of technology in data gathering and decision making. Submit your assignment by 11:59 PM on the seventh day of Week 4. Page 1 – Revised October 2009
