'Depth' is one of the levels that should be reached at a specific point during the Industrial Design Bachelors course. As an introduction to what this level entails I gave this presentation to 2nd year Bachelors students.
In February 2004 I presented a lecture for the Dutch Art Institute (DAI) in Enschede, The lecture focuses on several theories of shelter in an increasingly complex urban environment. The lecture is titled "Spaces Between Servitude and Statement"
It indirectly pointe towards DAI's prospect to be relocated elsewhere in Enschede.
The Dutch Art Institute is a postgraduate art institute that, in 2004, claimed an abandoned industrial building in Roombeek, a neighborhood that was heavily hit in 2000 by an enormous explosion caused by a fireworks factory located there. Basically the lecture addresses on a theoretical level, the necessity of providing art students with an optimal working environment that should be located right in the heart of an urban community. These working conditions not only should be utilitarian, but first and foremost should provide staff and students with a an optimal creative and evocative envirionment.
Between 2006 and 2008 I was Domain Manager for Domain Play at the Technical University in Eindhoven. This domain, one of the four domains in the Bachelor's phase (health, home, work and play), used to be called Domain Entertainment. I set up a new programme and, together with the team of lecturer-coaches, I developed a series of new projects, workshops and lectures. The faculty board allowed me to rename the Domain and redefine the thematical point of departure. This lecture was one of three presentations meant to elucidate my ideas and curricular strategy. This lecture was the second of a series of four, given in September 2006.
The Dutch Ministry of Finance issued a new commemorative euro coin in April 2009. As the designer of this coin I was invited by the Dutch Coin House (Het Nederlandsche Muntenhuis) to present my design, prior to the official presentation. On the 5th of April US president Barack Obama received the coin from Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende.
This project was initiated and developed by Laurence Aëgerter and Ronald van Tienhoven for Kunsthuis SYB, Beetsterzwaag, Frysia, Netherlands
Tristes Tropiques is a memoir, first published in France in 1955 by the anthropologist and structuralist Claude Lévi-Strauss. It documents his travels and anthropological work, focusing principally on Brazil. Although ostensibly a travelogue, the work is infused with philosophical reflections and ideas linking many academic disciplines, such as sociology, history, and literature.
Lévi-Strauss’ reflections regarding the life of Brazilian indians in a rapidly changing society, and the transformation in people’s perception vis-à-vis other cultures throughout the 20th century, led us to use Tristes Tropiques as conceptual and visual point of reference for our art project in Kunsthuis SYB, in Beetsterzwaag, Frysia.
Together with about 40 Beetsterzwaag residents of both sexes and all ages we reenacted the 63 photographs published by Lévi-Strauss in Tristes Tropiques. The photographs are set in the environs of Beetsterzwaag, which oddly resemble the Brazilian interior, notably that of Mato Grosso province.
This presentation was on show throughout our residency in Kunsthuis SYB. The end presentation was held on Saturday the 16th of October 2010. Check out the other Tristes Tropiques presentation, where the whole final photo sequence can be seen.
A publication ise part of the project output. In October 2011 this publication was presented at the Lloyd Hotel's Cultural Embassy in Amsterdam, and in November by Filigranes Editions at Paris Photo. In April 2012 the project will be on show at Salon für Kunstbuch in Vienna.
This project has been made possible thanks to the financial support from the Netherlands Foundation for Visual Arts, Design and Architecture and the Stokroos Foundation.
Kunsthuis SYB is being supported by the province of Frysia and the Mondriaan Foundation.
After my lecture for the International Conference for Curators of Contemporary Art (IKT) in Siena in 2001, I was invited by the Vestjaellands Kunstmuseum in Denmark to write an essay in the framework of "Industry of Vision" a project and exhibition that addressed and questioned historical and contemporary Utopias and Heterotopias.
As part of the Amsterdam Rietveld Academy's Studium Generale programme I held this lecture in March 2003 as part of a series of lectures and presentations centered around the contemporary city. In this lecture I perceive the modern city as a datascape running parallel with the intricate socio-cultural web of human exchange. Here, the city is readable and 'mappable' in many different ways.
On May 4th, after the Commemoration ceremony for the dead on the Dam square in Amsterdam, I presented my 07:05:1945: public art project at the NRC Café. Other speakers were NRC editor and writer Bianca Stigter and historian Corline van Es.

For the Rietveld Academy's Studium Generale programme I presented this lecture about the relationship between the garden, celestial (or platonic) love, and sexuality.
This report (in Dutch) describes the realisation of the monument for 31 victims who perished on the Dam square on May 7th, 1945. The monument was commissioned by Foundation for Dam Victims May 7th, 1945, curated and co-produced by me, and designed by Moniker (https://studiomoniker.com).
The young and upcoming design collective Afdeling Buitengewone Zaken invited me to participate in an evening at Het Nieuwe Instituut (dutch institute for architecture, design, and e-culture). I was asked to elucidate my ideas about the notion of hospitality in a world which is both growing virally global and building high walls at the same time. (in dutch)
This lecture was presented at the ArtEZ Academy for Architecture in Arnhem, in the framework of 'Lightness > Utopia' a lecture series and workshop curated by Martine de Wit/DUS Architects.

It outlines three key challenges: 1) designing and building models based on behavioral data and assumptions, 2) building confidence in models through internal and external validation against criteria and reference data, and 3) conducting large-scale experiments that explore parameter spaces using approaches like empirical calibration and sensitivity analysis while handling noise and output data at scale.
From Scarcity to Abundance (and from Mass Production to Hyper-personalization...Erik Duval
The document discusses the transition from scarcity to abundance of knowledge and learning resources due to technologies like the internet and social media. It describes how knowledge is now widely available and accessible online through platforms like YouTube, Facebook, and open educational resources. However, it notes that personalizing and tailoring learning to individual needs remains a challenge given the abundance of information. The document proposes the "snowflake effect" as a way to develop highly personalized learning experiences for each learner.
This practice is about how to select the appropriate mode of working for the design of each aspect or part of a product or a service. This first step of design that often is solved unconsciously in the companies is determinant for its success. There are different approaches to how the things are done considering its creation and design, that may be combined in order to find the best "working model".
The document discusses how architecture involves designing gestures and interactions between people, as well as information exchanges. It notes that physical objects and information are increasingly becoming interconnected in real-time.

After a short illness, Aaf van Essen died of cancer. She was one of the most valuable people in Art and Design education. As a tribute and playful commemoration, a number of friends and colleagues put together an alphabet of short presentations, based on Gilles Deleuze's Abécédaire. My letter was the 'O', round, perfect, seemingly indestructible, but also as ephemeral as all letters, words and people are. The 'O' reminds me of soap bubbles, the ultimate symbol of ephemerality, and for centuries depicted as an eloquent allegory of our short-lived human existence: Homo Bulla.
This lecture addresses the many aspects of so-called Conditional Design. Conditional Design supposes the necessity of specific rules and algorithms in order to attain a kind of structured freedom.

This document outlines the topics and schedule for a series of lectures and exercises called "Powers of Scale 3" focused on the relationship between individuals and their environments. The topics covered over the 8 days include: the self, reactions to lectures, prosthetics and covers, habitat and biotope, and the digital self. On day 5, the topic is "Our Habitat, Our Biotope" and students are assigned to create a 3 minute or less presentation exploring this topic, due by April 21st, in Keynote, PowerPoint or other widescreen format but not PDF. Case studies and examples of Boolean logic and Venn diagrams are provided.

Rethinking Kållered │ From Big Box to a Reuse Hub: A Transformation Journey ...SirmaDuztepeliler
"Rethinking Kållered │ From Big Box to a Reuse Hub: A Transformation Journey Toward Sustainability"
The booklet of my master’s thesis at the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology. (Gothenburg, Sweden)
This thesis explores the transformation of the vacated (2023) IKEA store in Kållered, Sweden, into a "Reuse Hub" addressing various user types. The project aims to create a model for circular and sustainable economic practices that promote resource efficiency, waste reduction, and a shift in societal overconsumption patterns.
Reuse, though crucial in the circular economy, is one of the least studied areas. Most materials with reuse potential, especially in the construction sector, are recycled (downcycled), causing a greater loss of resources and energy. My project addresses barriers to reuse, such as difficult access to materials, storage, and logistics issues.
Aims:
• Enhancing Access to Reclaimed Materials: Creating a hub for reclaimed construction materials for both institutional and individual needs.
• Promoting Circular Economy: Showcasing the potential and variety of reusable materials and how they can drive a circular economy.
• Fostering Community Engagement: Developing spaces for social interaction around reuse-focused stores and workshops.
• Raising Awareness: Transforming a former consumerist symbol into a center for circular practices.
Highlights:
• The project emphasizes cross-sector collaboration with producers and wholesalers to repurpose surplus materials before they enter the recycling phase.
• This project can serve as a prototype for reusing many idle commercial buildings in different scales and sizes.
• The findings indicate that transforming large vacant properties can support sustainable practices and present an economically attractive business model with high social returns at the same time.
• It highlights the potential of how sustainable practices in the construction sector can drive societal change.
4. Wholism>Holism
Holism (from ὅλος > holos, a Greek word meaning all,
entire, total) is the idea that all the properties of a
given system (biological, chemical, social, economic,
mental, linguistic, technological etc.) cannot be
determined or explained by the sum of its component
parts alone. Instead, the system as a whole determines
in an important way how the parts behave.
